During my college years as a painting student, I thought of “white” as merely the infancy of a blank piece of paper or a gessoed canvas, only to be conquered by the well-equipped and emotionally charged painter.  White paint had always been a section of the art supply store I quickly glanced over in a state of confusion, wondering why so many existed when “Titanium White was all one truly needed.” It wasn’t until my final BFA year that I came to a crux in my white paint thinking. I was working feverishly on my last series of paintings for my Senior Thesis and wanted to use a glaze of white oil paint to shroud one of my images in an ethereal wispy mist. I quickly realized there was something close to magic that was going to have to happen to allow me to create that mist.  I abandoned the idea after only a few failure-filled hours and one large painting, but have often thought about it since.  Try as I might, my Titanium White just wouldn’t give me the look I wanted.

I had thought it was just my technique that had let me down, but recent curiosity led me to the boon of knowledge on the Gamblin Oil Paint website. There I found an entire section devoted to nothing but white paints!  I highly recommend going to gamblincolors.com for a sweet little chart of their ELEVEN iterations of white and all the ideal uses of each, including my college favorite, Titanium White.  There you’ll find a white for every possible way of working in oils, from thick impasto for Impressionist style work, to transparent glazing of thin layers as I was attempting to do back in college.  As it turns out, all the magic I thought I needed back then could have been found in a juicy tube of Gamblin’s very transparent Zinc White. Your choice of white can indeed make or break your painting.

"Somebody that I used to know"
Australian artist Gotye brings us the art of camouflage in his music video for "Somebody that I used to know."
This very popular song and video came on the scene in 2011 and is one of Youtube's most popular videos. You can see in the video that the artist and actress are covered in paint to blend in with an art piece. Other artists are also incorporate and use camouflage into their art...

Liu Bolin, a Chinese artist who can almost totally disappear — and he does it in ordinary settings. No fancy art backgrounds. Here he isn't (actually he is) in a supermarket. (Look for his shoes.)

Bev Doolittle is another famous artist that takes camouflage art to another level. Her paintings seem to always have something hiding in them. She paints nature scenes with hidden animals. This example is the horses blending into the snow covered mountains.

Seeing as how it's that time of year to get back to school we thought we would take a look at this great art school movie....
Art School Confidential
A comedy about a young man's wild quest to become the greatest artist in the 21st century.
Inspired by his longtime love of drawing, and hoping to meet girls, Jerome enrolls at the Strathmore School of Art. His roommates are aspiring filmmaker Vince and closeted-gay fashion major Matthew. Jerome looks for love amongst the female students, but is unsuccessful until he falls for art model Audrey, the daughter of a famous pop artist.

As Jerome learns how the art world really works, he finds that he must adapt his vision to reality. Jerome slowly loses his idealism at art school and finds himself in competition with a mysterious student named Jonah for both Audrey's affection and artistic recognition. At the same time, a serial killer known as the Strathmore Strangler is on the loose near the campus, confounding the police and inspiring Vince to create a documentary about the murders.
