NATIONAL FRANKENSTEIN FRIDAY
National Frankenstein Friday, on the last Friday in October, recognizes author Mary Shelly, the novel Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus, her characters, Dr. Frankenstein and the monster. Dating back to the 1800s, Frankenstein's monster is one of the best-known horror characters of all time.
The novel by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (1797-1851) tells the story of a young scientist, Victor Frankenstein. While she published the first edition of Frankenstein in 1818 anonymously, the first 500 copies sold out. However, the public believed her husband, Percy Shelley, to be the author. Then in 1823, Mary Shelley published a new edition under her name. Another edition in 1831 included Shelley's explanation about how the story came to be. This version is the one modern readers are the most familiar with today.
The film world has created more than 60 movies or shorts on the theme of Frankenstein. Edison Studios produced the very first film version, Frankenstein, in 1910.
According to some sources, the day is observed on August 30th in honor of Mary Shelley's birthday.

NATIONAL GREASY FOODS DAY | OCTOBER 25
Those watching the scale beware. Augment the diet for National Greasy Foods Day on October 25th.
Although not the healthiest of choices, every once in a while, it is okay to enjoy some greasy food. From fried chicken, pizza, nachos, and french fries to bacon and hash brown potatoes, we all like a treat in our regular diet.
Cooking oil types include:
Olive oil – Palm oil – Soybean oil – Canola oil – Pumpkin oil – Corn oil – Sunflower oil – Safflower oil – Peanut oil – Grapeseed oil – Sesame oil - Agran oil – Rice bran oil – Other vegetable oils – Butter and lard.
Oil may be flavored with aromatic flavorings such as herbs, chilies, or garlic.
Greasy foods can be prepared with healthier oils and with much less than average amounts of oil used when cooking, making them much healthier choices.
For the educators and homeschoolers, National Day Calendar tested an assignment in our own classroom and made the material ready for you to use.

MacArthur Returns to the Philippines
by Bradley Hart, PhD
General Douglas MacArthur's 1944 landing on the island of Leyte did not mark the end of the battle for the Philippines, but instead the beginning of one of the most hard-fought and brutal campaigns in the deadly final months of the war in the Pacific.

BATON ROUGE– No. 7 LSU excelled Thursday night against Xavier (N.O.) in its first exhibition 114-53 , as five Tigers scored in double figures.
The Tigers were led in the contest by junior Flau’Jae Johnson who posted a 30 point, 10 rebound double-double in the dominant victory. Johnson was an efficient 13-19 from the field and 2-4 from three point range. Senior forward Aneesah Morrow was also in great form, recording a first double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Morrow was 7-15 from the field and tacked on 5 steals and a team-high 4 assists.
“(Flau’Jae) was phenomenal and I think what you’re seeing from her is comfort,” Mulkey said. “She’s a leader and it’s because she has all the experience and puts in the work. She and Morrow were the most comfortable out there tonight. I’m not surprised either one of them had double-doubles.”
Sophomore Mjracle Sheppard thrived in her debut with the Tigers, posting 12 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and a game-high 6 steals, bringing great energy coming off the bench. Junior forward Jersey Wolfenbarger added 12 points and freshman guard Jada Richard finished with 14 points, including 2-2 from beyond the arc.
“I feel like getting steals and playing defense is a team effort,” Sheppard. If I wasn’t able to depend on my teammates and feed off of their energy, I would not be able to get those steals.”
LSU swarmed the Gold Nuggets on defense, registering 18 steals and one block in the game and held Xavier to 34-percent from the field on the night. Offensively, the Tigers were efficient on the night and shot 58.2 from the field. The Tigers out-rebounded Xavier 46-28 and won the turnover battle 33-15.
LSU returns next Wednesday for its final Exhibition against LSU-Alexandria in the PMAC. The Tigers open their season on November 4 against Eastern Kentucky.

Taylor Swift Eras Tour in New Orleans projected to have upwards of $200M economic impact
CityBusiness staff reportse
If you can’t tell by the gigantic friendship bracelet on Caesars Superdome, or the mass amount of “Swifties” converging downtown, the three-night New Orleans stop on the Taylor Swift Eras Tour is finally here. And New Orleans is ready for the economic and tourism impact.
The U.S. Travel Association estimates that the average Taylor Swift concert ticket goer spends approximately $1,300 on travel, hotels, food, merchandise, and costumes.
There were 150,000 tickets sold for this Friday through Sunday, Oct. 25-27, which means there will be an estimated $195 million economic impact for New Orleans this weekend. And that’s not counting any downtown businesses that concert goers may venture to and buy from, as well.
New Orleans & Co. Reports Full Hotel Occupancy
New Orleans & Company, formerly known as the New Orleans Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, reports 100% occupancy on Friday and Saturday nights and 80% occupancy for Sunday night of the 26,000 hotel rooms across the CBD, French Quarter and Warehouse District. New Orleans & Company is the official destination sales and marketing organization for the city’s tourism industry, representing over 1,100 member companies in the hospitality community.
New Orleans is one of 23 U.S. stops on the Eras Tour, which is reportedly the highest-grossing concert tour of all time. Oh, if you’re thinking of going to any of the concerts at the last minute, then Seat Geek has tickets as low as $1,263 on Friday, $1,145 on Saturday, and $1,220 on Sunday. They are sold out through Ticketmaster.
“We are excited to welcome Taylor Swift and her fans to our city for this monumental event,” said New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell in a press release issued by the City of New Orleans. “This tour will be an opportunity for us to showcase why we are a world class city when it comes to hosting superstar events on the biggest stages.”
City officials announced public safety measures to prepare for the concert tour stop. The New Orleans Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (NOHSEP) will activate the city’s Event Command Post, staffed by representatives from public safety agencies. NOHSEP will be in contact with state and federal partners to ensure public safety.
Additionally, road closures and parking restrictions will be in place around the Superdome on concert days. These closures will be based on pedestrian flow but will likely begin around 6 p.m. Traffic restrictions may occur on the following streets: Poydras St. (North Claiborne Ave. to Convention Center Blvd.); Canal St. (North Claiborne Ave. to N. Peters St.); and Loyola Ave. (North Iberville St. to Calliope St.). The RTA will operate a second vessel for the Canal Street/Algiers Point Ferry.
Don’t Forget About the “Merch” (As the Kids Say)
The dollars will also be rolling, or the credit cards will be swiped, as Taylor Swift merchandise is sold this weekend. Sales started Wednesday as early public merchandise sales took place in Champions Square.
On Friday-Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Smoothie King Center will allow the general public to purchase merchandise. There will also be merchandise sales at Champions Square starting at 2:30 p.m. until the end of the concert. Champion Square will be a security perimeter, and guests must have a valid ticket for that day’s show. There will be no re-entry.
If you are not attending the Taylor Swift concert, Duncan Plaza can heal your fear of missing out.
The City of New Orleans and the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Economy are hosting the “Embrace the Culture Festival” at Duncan Plaza – a three -night festival showcasing the best of New Orleans and Louisiana music, art, and food during Taylor Swift concert weekend. Duncan Plaza will also double down as the ride-share and transportation hub for concertgoers.
The event is free and open to the public, offering visitors an immersive cultural experience while they wait for their rides. Uber/Lyft rideshare at Duncan Plaza will go into effect on Oct. 24. It will run on Gravier Street and Perdido Street from Loyola Avenue to Lasalle Street.
The Embrace the Culture Festival will run from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m. all three nights.

The Project
This collaboration is aligned with our city’s efforts to uplift community voices and utilize our city’s culture to bring positive change to the community. We can bring opportunities for small businesses, local artists, and culture bearers. Most importantly, with community support, the project will create a self-funded long-term impact on our city, helping create positive change and local investment through the arts. The artwork will be both meaningful and representative of the diversity of our city, boosting social cohesion and strengthening community relationships.
The inaugural NOLA Mural Fest will launch in the fall of 2024 at Beanlandia October 25th-27th.

NEW ORLEANS – The Mayor's Office of Nighttime Economy today announces the launch of a new rideshare pilot program for Frenchmen Street. The program is aimed at reducing vehicular traffic and improving safety. As one of the major strips in New Orleans for live music and entertainment, Frenchmen Street is often clogged with bumper-to-bumper traffic on this short two-block strip. For this pilot program, the Office of Nighttime Economy has partnered with Uber and Lyft to create rideshare drop-off and pick-up zones around the area to alleviate traffic. Uber and Lyft alone, account for roughly 80 percent of peak weekend traffic, according to their data.
Like other cities, New Orleans is moving toward implementing permanent designated rideshare zones in the future for a safer and more efficient solution to this ongoing problem, so that residents and visitors can enjoy the Frenchmen Street attractions without the hassle. The rideshare pilot program will run from Sept. 26 through Nov. 24 on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. During that time, only rideshare pick-up and drop-off traffic will be prohibited from entering Frenchmen Street. All other vehicles will maintain access to the street.
"We’re excited to roll out the Frenchmen Rides initiative for improved safety for both patrons and nightlife workers on Frenchmen Street," said Michael Ince, Interim Director, Mayor's Office of Nighttime Economy.
"We look forward to continued collaboration with businesses and other stakeholders as we work to improve the overall experience of Frenchmen Street. I commend Rob Henig Bell, Community Projects Manager, Mayor's Office of Nighttime Economy for spearheading this initiative."
The pick-up and drop-off zones are located one block away from attractions, on the river-bound side of Elysian Fields Avenue. Non-rideshare vehicular traffic and pedestrian activity will retain access to the street, allowing for safer, less congested movement along the Frenchmen Street strip.
Designated pick-up and drop-off locations are common internationally and across the country. New Orleans residents are likely to have encountered them at the airport, attending Saints games or during the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Many cities across the country have employed geofencing solutions for busy nightlife strips, similar to Frenchmen Street.
"By putting safety at the forefront, Uber and the City of New Orleans are working together to provide dedicated space for Uber users near one of the city's busiest nightlife streets, while encouraging more shared mobility," said Javier Correoso, Uber Director of Public Affairs.
"Through the Mayor's Office of Nighttime Economy and in deploying tactics from Uber's Nightlife Operating Manual, New Orleans is at the forefront of reimagining what the future of curbside access looks like to best suit the needs of consumers."
The two designated rideshare zones are located on Elysian Fields Avenue, one block off of the Frenchmen strip.
- Zone 1 - 700 Elysian Fields Avenue (next to Washington Square Park)
- Zone 2 - 500 Elysian Fields Avenue (next to Premium Parking lot)
All rides created in the Uber and Lyft app to or from Frenchmen Street, between Esplanade Avenue and Royal Street, will be directed to one of the two rideshare zones.
Signage in these zones will remain ‘as is’ for daytime hours. For designated nighttime hours, signage will be changed to ‘Passenger Zone: No Parking’ with enforcement and penalties levied for violators in accordance with standard violations, which includes ticketing and towing.
For more information and updates, visit: Nighttime Economy - Programs - Frenchmen Rides - City of New Orleans (nola.gov)

Corsica, a French island in the Mediterranean, has a fascinating wine culture that's shaped by its unique blend of French and Italian influences, rugged terrain, and Mediterranean climate. Despite being part of France, Italy’s influence on Corsica is profound, shaping the island’s culture, language, architecture, cuisine, and especially its wine traditions. Corsica was under Genoese rule for nearly five centuries (from the late 13th century until 1768), and its proximity to Tuscany and Sardinia also contributed to strong Italian connections.
Most of the Corsican grapes have ties to Italy as well. Nielluccio is Corsica’s most important red grape and is genetically very similar to Sangiovese, Italy’s iconic grape, particularly from Tuscany. Vermentino, known in Corsica as Malvoisie de Corse, is widely planted in both Corsica and Sardinia, as well as in regions of mainland Italy like Liguria and Tuscany. It is thought to have originated from Italy, possibly Liguria, and spread across the Mediterranean. Sciaccarello, another key red grape of Corsica, is believed to be related to Mammolo, a lesser-known grape from Tuscany. Mammolo is often used in blends, such as in Chianti, but in Corsica, Sciaccarello has developed a distinct identity.
Even after France acquired Corsica in 1768, Italian influence remained deeply embedded in the island’s identity. Many Corsicans still feel a closer cultural affinity to Italy than to mainland France, especially given the shared history, language, and food traditions. This dual identity makes Corsica unique within France, with its Italian roots constantly blending with French culture to create something distinct. It also contributes to the island’s distinctive wine style—one that’s both rustic and refined, combining the structure of Italian reds with the elegance of French whites.
Corsican wines are still relatively under the radar, which makes them an exciting discovery for wine drinkers looking for something new and unique. Dave Sobiesk will accompany us on this tour as Artisan Fine Wines has a great selection from the island for us to choose from. I hope you'll join us! Use this link for tickets,Corsica

07:00 October 04, 2024
By: Charles Andre Blanchard
Celebrate the Spooky Season
Beginning October 10 and extending until November 2, attendees to Zombie Paintball can celebrate the Halloween season with a monstrous bang (and potentially satisfy their need for speed).
Festivities
This popular seasonal activity once again returns to the premier racing facility in Avondale, this time with an enhanced festival area and zombie-hunting scenes, courtesy of their new partnership with Mardi Gras Productions. The 20-minute experience includes a bus ride to designated target stations, where riders will test their accuracy and try to defeat all the zombie enemies. They are also given a chance to reload their guns and go back through the stations before finishing.
Guests can also explore nearby festivities to celebrate the Halloween season. Food trucks will be present, along with stations for pumpkin carving and face painting. Local craft vendors and more themed-attractions make this a great family-friendly stop this Halloween. For the adults, drink specials will also be offered on several days.
NOTE: The only targets are the zombies. Attendees will not be harmed or shot at. However, children under 12 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.
Pricing & Packages
General admission begins at $22 per person and includes a rental paintball gun and 150 rounds of ammo.
For $45, Guests can purchase the Zombie Paintball + Karting package, which includes the aforementioned rental gun and ammo but also an added go-kart session on the NOLA Motorsports track.
Have a large group? NOLA Motorsports also offers a $650 party package. With this, up to 28 people can skip the line and each receive a commemorative bandana before boarding a private bus and being given the accompanying rental guns and ammo.
For tickets, visit the NOLA Motorsports Park's box office or their website.
Hours & Dates of Operation
The attraction will be open from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on the following days:

benign
/bɪˈnaɪn/
Definition: Gentle and kindly; not harmful or detrimental.
Origin: From the Latin word "benignus," meaning "kind" or "good."
Example: The doctor assured her that the tumor was benign and posed no threat to her health.
"Harmless" is the essence of what "benign" signifies. When something is described as benign, it implies that it is not only gentle but also free from danger or risk. For instance, a benign tumor, while it may need monitoring, does not invade surrounding tissues or spread to other parts of the body. In a broader context, the term can apply to actions or behaviors that are non-threatening or beneficial, such as a benign smile or a benign policy initiative. Thus, "benign" embodies a reassuring quality of safety and kindness in various contexts.benign

Dodgers versus Yankees
Game 1 of the World Series begins tonight (FOX, 8 pm ET) in Los Angeles as the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers—the league's two largest teams by market—face off in a historic championship for a 12th time. Current betting odds give the Dodgers a slight edge in what many commentators are calling a toss-up.
The series pits the American League and National League's No. 1 teams against each other for the first time since 2013 and only the fifth occasion in 30 seasons. The matchup also features some of the sport's best players, with five former Most Valuable Players expected to play—the most ever. That group includes each league's home run leader (the Yankees' Aaron Judge and the Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani) for the first time since 1956.
Together with the Yankees' Juan Soto, the trio makes up the sport's top batters—by weighted runs created plus, a metric that attempts to weigh a variety of factors—the first such appearance of the top three offensive leaders at the Fall Classic. See more historic stats here.
The Yankees seek their record-extending 28th championship title, while the Dodgers seek their eighth—and to avoid adding to their most-ever 14 title losses.

Some recipes call for cheese. A variety of cheese options can be used. Other recipes add a little bacon to the dough for an even richer flavor. When it comes to dipping sauces, breadsticks satisfy just about everyone at the table. Restaurants and home cooks offer up cheesy, herbed and spicy sauces for dipping. If you can't decide, order extra and try them all!

What were Barbies made for? The origin of 11 timeless toys
Published on October 25, 2024
Credit: Super Snapper
Who comes up with toys? From dolls and teddy bears to kites and frisbees, these beloved classics have origin stories filled with creativity, serendipity, and often family games. Over the decades, these toys have influenced several generations of children. How did they come to be? Let’s uncover the tales behind 11 timeless toys that left indelible marks on childhoods all around the world.
1Play-Doh
Credit: LMoonlight
It wasn’t a plaything, at first. The famous modeling putty was created in 1933 by American soap manufacturer Kutol Products for cleaning coal residue from wallpaper. When houses stopped being heated by coal and soot was no longer a housekeeping problem, the company neared bankruptcy.
It was then that the McVicker family, creators of the compound, became aware that a kindergarten teacher was using their coal-cleaning putty to make art projects with the children. Inspired, the McVickers brainstormed names for the new toy. They considered "Rainbow Modeling Compound" and "Play-Doh," ultimately choosing the latter. They launched it in 1956 and became an international success in a matter of 5 years.

You might think that teddy bears have been around for centuries, but that’s not the case. The Steiff company, founded in Germany in the 1880s, was the first to popularize plush toys in their country and across Europe. It wasn’t until 1902, however, that these toys became famous in the U.S.
This happened because, simultaneously, toymaker Morris Michtom had patented and released the design of a plushy bear figure. He based the design on a cartoon depicting President Theodore Roosevelt refusing to shoot a small, cute bear. Inspired by this incident, Michtom named the new plush toy "Teddy Bears." His and Steiff’s versions of the toy became widespread in the world. Some years later, in England, author A.A. Milne bought a fuzzy bear for his son and, in 1921, published a series of books inspired by it, called Winnie-the-Pooh.
3Playmobil
Credit: Teo Zac
Large heads, big smiles, and no noses. Did you know that the iconic design of Playmobil’s face was inspired by children’s drawings? In the early 1970s, Hans Beck, a German toymaker, revolutionized the industry with the invention of these small plastic humans. At the request of the owner of the Geobra Brandstätter company, Beck set out to design a toy that would be simple yet engaging, fitting perfectly in a child’s hand.
Beck developed the small figures, which, during the 1973 oil crisis, became a much cheaper and more viable product than larger plastic toys like hula hoops. Launched in 1974, Playmobil was an instant hit, and the brand went on to release accessories like automobiles, cranes, and boats that became just as classic as the main figures.
4Lego
Credit: ta98mori
Lego bricks have to be one of the smartest inventions in the toy world. They were introduced in 1949 by the Danish company Lego Group, today the largest manufacturer in the industry. The company was founded by Ole Kirk Christiansen, a carpenter who started making wooden toys in 1932 under a name inspired by the Danish phrase leg godt, which translates to "play well."
In 1949, the first version of the famous interlocking plastic bricks was released. This version was based on similar existing wooden blocks on the market. Over the years, seeing the inventive potential of these construction toys, the company developed a variety of brick types. Lego bricks soon became a symbol of creativity and free play to the point where they are no longer considered just toys for children but are popular among adults as well.
5Jenga
Credit: Michał Parzuchowski
As simple and brilliant as it is, the first game of Jenga wasn’t played until one family invented it in the 1970s. For 13 years after that, it remained a family tradition. Its creator, Leslie Scott, and her family had once purchased a set of wooden blocks from a sawmill in Takoradi, Ghana. Playing with them, they had come up with an exciting game that followed the rules that we now know as Jenga.
Scott explained that its name is derived from the Swahili word kujenga, which means "to build." She officially introduced Jenga to the world at the London Toy Fair in 1983, and it quickly became a global favorite.
6Barbies
Credit: Sandra Gabriel
It is estimated that two Barbies are sold every second. The world’s most famous doll was introduced in 1959 and remains one of the strongest brands in the toy industry. The concept was created by Ruth Handler, who, along with her husband Elliot, co-founded Mattel in 1945.
Ruth had noticed that their daughter, Barbara, would play with paper dolls and assign them various adult female roles. At the time, most dolls simply represented babies or infants. Combining this vision with the image of a Bild Lilli doll that Ruth had purchased in Europe, the Handlers created the Barbie doll. It became Mattel’s signature product, and the company is today one of the world’s largest toy manufacturers.
7Frisbee
Credit: Shubham Sharan
One evening after a Thanksgiving dinner in 1937, Fred Morrison and his fiancee Lucile started taking turns tossing a popcorn can lid at one another—a form of play that humans have engaged in for ages. That’s why it didn’t strike Morrison as an excellent toy idea, until one day when continuing the game of tossing a cheap pan back and forth on some beach, Fred and Lucile were approached by someone interested in buying the flying object. That was when Fred's lightbulb went off.
Marketing them as "Flyin-Saucers" to ride the wave of interest in unidentified flying objects that surged in the 1940s, Morrison and his partners started selling pan-shaped plastic discs. They eventually sold the rights to Wham-O, the company that changed the product’s name to "Frisbee."
8Kite
Credit: Agnieszka Ziomek
Kites originated in China over 2,000 years ago, but their original uses long preceded their role in park playtime as we know it today. The earliest kites were made of materials like silk and bamboo and were used for various practical purposes, including military communication, measuring distances, performing religious rituals, and testing the wind.
It wasn't until the late 19th and early 20th centuries that kites became widely recognized as recreational toys for both children and adults.
9Hula hoop
Credit: Los Muertos Crew
Of the list, these are certainly the oldest. Hoop-shaped objects have been around since 500 BC and were often used recreationally by both kids and adults. In the mid-20th century, though, bamboo hoops became extremely popular in Australia, where children would use them in playgrounds and around the streets.
In 1957, the company Wham-O (the same one that patented the "Frisbee") became aware of its success in that country. They began manufacturing the hoops in a plastic material and selling them in the U.S. as the "Hula Hoop." They did not invent the name, which had been in use since the 18th century, but they trademarked it, and it became one of their legendary products.
10Etch-A-Sketch
Credit: Klim Musalimov
Etch-A-Sketch, the famous drawing toy, was born by accident. French inventor André Cassagnes, an electrical technician, was writing with a pen on a translucent material when he realized that traces could easily be produced and erased. Based on this, he created a device he named L'Ecran Magique, or "the magic screen." The first version used aluminum powder and glass to create a toy that could be drawn on with a simple stylus, and then shaken clean to start anew.
Later on, the Ohio Art Company saw the idea at a toy fair in 1959, recognized its potential, and rebranded it as the "Etch A Sketch." For many decades, even with the advancement of digital technology, this analog toy remained a timeless classic.
11Slinky
Credit: Adam Valstar
Slinky, the beloved coil toy, was invented by naval engineer Richard James in 1943. He had been working on a project to stabilize equipment on ships when he accidentally knocked one of the springs off a shelf. He watched the spring "walk" instead of falling. That funny image gave him an idea.
Together with his wife Betty, James refined the concept and introduced it as "Slinky" through department stores. They created a toy that was as charming as it was simple, and completely affordable, initially selling for $1. The toy could walk downstairs, stretch, and bounce back, which hooked children and adults. Its timeless appeal has even earned Slinky a place in the National Toy Hall of Fame, and even an eponymous character in the Toy Story franchise.

⚜️⚜️Ain't There (dere) No More - New Orleans
Stephen Austen
Maurice and Margaret Fitzgerald open their namesake restaurant in 1946 and another New Orleans gastronomic legend was launched. What memories of down-home family dining ensued!
Out in West End Park, generations would cross the wooden bridge, out to the clapboard establishment. Fitzgerald’s was built on pilings and actually over Lake Ponchartrain. Mountainous servings of boiled shrimp, stuffed crabs, and fried seafood, piled on slices of toast all-but-guaranteed generations of return business.
Sadly in 1998, Hurricane Georges damaged Fitzgerald’s beyond repair. Only a few pilings mark its passing…

Johnette Downing - Petit Pierre and His Wild Adventure
Join us for a special story time reading and signing with children's picture book author and musician Johnette Downing as we celebrate the release of her new book, Petit Pierre and His Wild Adventure.
Petit Pierre has made a home for himself on the coast where Louisiana meets Mississippi, and now it is time for him to learn how to plunge-dive. Brown pelicans typically pick up this behavior by watching others do it. Will a potential love interest help Pierre learn how to dive? Young readers will follow his progress and, along the way, find out more about Gulf of Mexico marine life.
“As any nature-lover knows, watching brown pelicans plunge dive is one of the Gulf Coast’s most majestic sights. Joining Pierre as he learns this skill, step-by-step, page-by-page, is inspirational, exciting, and, just like in nature, a joy to behold.” — Rien Fertel, author of Brown Pelican
Johnette Downing is a multi-award winning musician and author who serves up a gumbo of Louisiana roots music and books in a toe-tapping, two-stepping good time for children across the globe. In addition to working with children, she presents keynotes and workshops for educators globally. Dedicated to celebrating childhood, nurturing cultural exchanges, and fostering literacy through her music and books, Downing has performed in the Middle East, Asia, Africa, Europe, Central America, North America and the Caribbean. Her presentations speak to a child’s interests in an engaging, interactive, thought-provoking, educational, entertaining and culturally respectful way; earning her a reputation for being the “Musical Ambassador to Children” and the “Pied Piper of Louisiana Music Traditions.”

With training from the John Folse Culinary Institute, he began his culinary career at Brennan’s in the French Quarter where he studied under Chef Mike Roussel. Soon after, Cook joined the team at Commander’s Palace as Sous Chef and Chef de Partie. Cook has also worked as a private chef, executive banquet chef, and research and development consultant for several national restaurants.Sam Hanna, a New Orleans-based food and beverage photographer, boasts a global portfolio spanning books, magazines, television, and packaging. His discerning eye has attracted a diverse clientele, including restaurants, hotels, caterers, retail food brands, agencies, and renowned chefs.

Nickel-A-Dance Fall 2024 Season to Begin on Frenchmen Street
by: OffBeat Staff
The fall 2024 season of Nickel-A-Dance, a beloved free traditional jazz concert series, is set to begin on September 29. For over three decades, Nickel-A-Dance has brought live jazz to the public, offering an afternoon of family-friendly entertainment on Sundays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. This year, the series moves to a new location at Favela Chic, located at 525 Frenchmen Street, continuing its tradition on this famous music corridor.
Originally started in 1994, Nickel-A-Dance has become a staple for fans of New Orleans jazz who may not frequent nightclubs. It attracts a diverse crowd, including children, families, and seniors, all coming together to celebrate traditional jazz as America’s original dance music. This fall’s lineup will feature some of the city’s most renowned jazz musicians.
The fall series will conclude on October 27 with Gregg Stafford and The Jazz Hounds. Stafford, a respected trumpeter and vocalist, has led several prominent New Orleans jazz bands, including Danny Barker’s Jazz Hounds and the Young Tuxedo Brass Band. He has dedicated his career to preserving the musical traditions of New Orleans and remains an active figure in the city’s jazz community.

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon, October 28
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

BEAUTIFUL DREAMERS - Minrose Gwin
Join us for an evening with author Minrose Gwin when she presents and signs her new novel, BEAUTIFUL DREAMERS.
From Minrose Gwin, award-winning author of The Accidentals, comes Beautiful Dreamers, a story of a precocious teen and her mother, their gay best friend, and the con man who unravels their family.
It’s 1953 when Memory Feather and her mother, Virginia, are welcomed back home to the Mississippi Gulf Coast community of Belle Cote by Virginia’s childhood friend Mac McFadden, whose verve and energy buoy the recently divorced Virginia to embrace this new chapter. Memory (“Mem”) is unlike other girls: she is attuned to the voices of plants and animals and is missing two fingers on her twisted left hand. The three of them knit their lives together and become a close, though unconventional, family.
While Mac’s wealth, brains, and good humor have allowed him to carve out a niche in Belle Cote, his position as a gay man active in the burgeoning Civil Rights Movement exposes him to censure, harassment, and even brutality. When the unscrupulous and charismatic Tony Amato arrives in Belle Cote as Mac’s “guest,” he sets in motion a series of events that will shatter familial bonds and forever change Mem’s life. Now, an adult Mem recounts the story of the scars Tony left in her teenage years, confronting her culpability in the disastrous events of that final summer.
Sweeping, dramatic, and vividly rendered, Beautiful Dreamers is a novel of innocence and betrayal, love and intolerance, and the care and honesty we owe the families we choose.
Minrose Gwin is the author of the novels The Queen of Palmyra, a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers pick and finalist for the John Gardner Fiction Book Award; Promise, which was shortlisted for the Willie Morris Award in Southern Literature; and The Accidentals, which received the 2020 Mississippi Institute for Arts and Letters Award in Fiction. Her fourth novel, Beautiful Dreamers, has just been released by Hub City Press. She has also published a memoir, Wishing for Snow, about the collision of poetry and psychosis in her mother’s life, and four books of literary and cultural criticism, most recently Remembering Medgar Evers: Writing the Long Civil Rights Movement. She was coeditor of The Literature of the American South, a Norton anthology, and The Southern Literary Journal. She received the Society for the Study of Southern Literature Richard Beale Davis Award for Distinguished Lifetime Service to Southern Letters and the William Wisdom/William Faulkner Books-in-Process Award for Rescue, the novel she’s working on now.
Like the characters in her novel Promise, Minrose Gwin is a native of Tupelo, Mississippi. She began her writing career as a journalist and later taught at universities across the country, most recently the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she was Kenan Eminent Professor of English. She now lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with her partner, Ruth Salvaggio, and several loquacious four-leggeds.

Get out your lederhosen, spruce up your dirndls and prepare to eat and drink German style — It’s time for Oktoberfest at Middendorf’s! Oktoberfest is an annual tradition that runs for 6 weeks, every Wednesday and Thursday, at Middendorf’s Manchac and Middendorf’s Slidell. It starts on Oktober 2, 2024 and ends on November 7, 2024. That’s right… Oktoberfest is so much fun that it spills over into November!
There is a different Oktoberfest meal available each week (while supplies last):
APPETIZERS
- Kartoffelpuffer mit Apfel Sosse 8.75 (German Potato Pancake with Apple Sauce)
- Maultaschen in Brühe mit Gerösteten Zwiebeln 10.95 (German Ravioli in Broth)
- Nürnbergerle 10.25 (3 small Bratwust with Sauerkraut and Pretzel)
- Riesenbrezel 10.00 (Giant Pretzel with mustard)
- Vesper Teller 14.50 (Assorted meats & cheeses served with pickle, radish, onion, mustard and pretzel)
- Weisswurst 10.25 (White Sausage served with pretzel and sweet mustard)
- Wurstsalat 9.25 (Chopped German Salami, Cold Cuts, Cheeses, Pickles and Onion tossed in Vinaigrette)
- It’s the Chef’s Choice which appetizers will be available each week. Stay tuned!
ENTREES & DESSERTS (A different meal is available each week of Oktoberfest.)
- 10/30/24 & 10/31/24 — Schweinshaxe, Bayerischkraut und Brezel 21.50 (Pork Hind Shank/Ham Hock, Smothered Cabbage and Pretzel); Apfel Strudel mit Vanille Eis 7.25 (Apple Strudel with Vanilla Ice Cream)
11/6/24 & 11/7/24 — Wiener Schnitzel und Geröstet Semmelknödel mit Pilzrahmsoße, Gemischtem Salat und Brezel 19.50 (Breaded Thin Pork Loin and Dumpling with Mushroom Cream Sauce, Salad and Pretzel); Schwarzwälderkirschtorte 7.25 (Black Forest Cake)
The German expertise comes from Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer who is a native of Germany. He grew-up in the hamlet of Bächlingen where his family still lives today. The village was established in 950 AD and boasts a grand population of around 150 people.
“It’s an honor to share my German heritage with everyone through the recipes that I grew up with,” said Middendorf’s Owner Horst Pfeifer. “I think Louis Middendorf would have been so happy to see Oktoberfest here at the restaurant. Louis was also from Germany, and he founded Middendorf’s back in 1934 with his wife, Josie. It’s funny because Middendorf’s is so widely known for seafood that a lot of people don’t realize that Middendorf is actually a German name.”
- During Oktoberfest, there is a different German meal available each week for lunch and dinner, 10:30am-9:00pm (while supplies last). Guests who eat an Oktoberfest meal for all six weeks will receive an Oktoberfest Prize! Punch cards must be punched each week and turned in on the final week.
- The full regular menu is also available for guests. So, you can have a German meal, and your friend can have the Thin Fried Catfish. Everyone’s happy!
- Of course, we have a great selection of German beer and liqueur to go with your German meal (see below).
- Authentic German music is also in store for Oktoberfest. We’ll have live accordion music every night of Oktoberfest, 4:30pm-8:30pm. In Manchac, David C. Symons will join us. In Slidell, Will Robichaux will play for the 1st week, and then for the next 5 weeks, it will be Greg Speck (aka Captain Squeeze).
- Join in the fun by dressing up in your favorite lederhosen, dirndls and German accessories just like our front of house staff. We’ll have a great variety of hats and souvenirs in our gift shop.

Billy Nungesser Lt. Governor of Louisiana
For the fourth consecutive year, Louisiana will showcase its vibrant culture in the 2025 Tournament of Rose Parade in Pasadena, California! This year’s float, featuring a Louisiana alligator adorned with beads, a Cajun dance hall, and pots of boiled seafood, perfectly captures the essence of a “Louisiana Saturday Night.” Plus, enjoy mid-parade entertainment by rising country star Timothy Wayne!
We can’t wait to share Louisiana’s celebratory spirit and unique culture with the world once again.

Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.
The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.
Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.
And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.
Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.
Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.
