Summer 2026, No. 1

A Note from our President and CEO

Before the next school year begins, consider how you can build up the partnership between families and educators. Research shows that strong family engagement improves attendance. When families understand the impact of attendance on their children’s well-being, believe that sending their children to school will lead to a better future, and have faith that schools will support them, they are more likely to get their students to attend school.

I was delighted to join Beyond The Blog with The Patterson Foundation, where we discussed family engagement and what helps students show up to school. Listen here. Find more resources to help develop strong family relationships below.

Summer programs are a great way to motivate student learning and can lead to improved attendance and engagement. Share with families the American Camp Association’s Find a Camp tool. For strategies to develop a successful program, read Analysis: Summer Learning Is More Popular than Ever. How to Make Sure Your District’s Program Is Effective in The74.

This week we released a new analysis of 2024-25 school year chronic absence data available from 31 states. The short blog post, developed with the Everyone Graduates Center at Johns Hopkins University, focuses on chronic absence rates in U.S. schools. We found that most states still have more schools with either high or extreme levels of chronic absence than they did prior to the pandemic.

The blog post features bright spot stories from 2 schools in different regions showing educators using creative, tailored strategies to move the needle on student attendance

Thank you so much for your efforts this past year! As the school year wraps up, we hope that you find time for some fun and rest over the summer.

With best wishes,

Hedy N. Chang

Attendance Resources

The Perfectly Punctual Campaign is a two-generation approach for young learners and their families that engages children daily in monitoring their own attendance and honors parents monthly for getting their children to school on time.

We’re excited to announce our first joint venture publication for sale through Lakeshore Learning: “Ready, Set, Go to School with Punctual Pete,” a bilingual activity book that can be used along with the free PPC materials and leader’s guide found on our website.

Schools that excel in building (and restoring) trust invest the time in asking questions and unearthing family wisdom, according to the nonprofit Learning Heroes report, Unlocking the How: Designing family engagement strategies that lead to school success. Find examples of schools implementing strategies as well as recommendations to support building a comprehensive family engagement strategy that directly impacts student learning and well-being.

The nonprofit No Kid Hungry has gathered information and links to summer meal programs. Find summer resources for families and kids here in the Summer Food Service Resource Hub.

What Works Spotlight

In Prince George's County Public Schools, MD, Andrew Jackson Academy had a chronic absence rate of 74% in 2022. Under the leadership of Principal Warren Tweety and the support of community-driven Attendance Ambassador Program, the school now has a chronic absence rate of 21%, Tweety said. Listen to this news story by NBC4 Washington.

Professional Development

Our Professional Leadership Attendance Network (PLAN) is designed to support district leaders responsible for improving attendance systems. PLAN is not a program — it’s a leadership approach that helps districts move beyond isolated initiatives. The next cohort begins January 20, 2027. For more information contact Lorri Hobson (Lorri@attendanceworks.org) and Zach Freeman (Zach@attendanceworks.org)

Registration for Fall 2026 national e-learning series is now open! This three-part e-training offers educators proven tiered strategies that promote attendance and engagement using a team approach.

Research

A new research review from the University of Oregon’s HEDCO Institute finds that implementing school-based interventions can lead to reduced chronic absence. Promising approaches include family messaging, whole-school reforms, mentoring, family engagement and stronger data systems.

The Parent Institute for Quality Education’s (PIQE) Winter 2026 Family Needs Assessment report offers a deep look at the needs, concerns and priorities identified by primarily Hispanic families in California.

In “The Drivers of the Absenteeism Crisis: New Evidence from the Understanding America Study,” researchers at the USC Ed Policy Hub examine factors contributing to persistently high chronic absence. The analysis offers useful context for schools, districts and partners working to improve attendance.
