ONE WEEK UNTIL THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME OPENS!
PERFORMANCE DATES
Friday, January 13 at 7PM
Saturday, January 14 at 7PM
Sunday, January 15 at 5PM

ABOUT THE PLAY
15-year-old Christopher has an extraordinary brain. He is exceptional at mathematics but ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. He has never ventured alone beyond the end of his road, he detests being touched, and he distrusts strangers. Now it is 7 minutes after midnight, and Christopher stands beside his neighbor’s slain dog, Wellington. Finding himself under suspicion, Christopher is determined to solve the mystery of who murdered Wellington, and he carefully records each fact of the crime. But his detective work, forbidden by his father, takes him on a thrilling journey that upturns his world.

Winner of the 2015 Tony Award for Best Play. “This adaptation by the acclaimed playwright Simon Stephens is intensely, innately theatrical; it is also funny and extremely moving…resonates with quality.” — Telegraph (London). “…just terrific…a profoundly moving play about adolescence, fractured families, mathematics, colours and lights…dazzling.” — Independent (London). “A beautiful, eloquent, dazzlingly inventive show about the wonders of life.” — Evening Standard (London).

Please note that the play includes explicit language.
ANNUAL ALUMNI COLLEGE PANEL PROVIDES MEANINGFUL GLIMPSE INTO COLLEGE LIFE
On Wednesday, January 4, we kicked off the New Year with a robust Alumni College Panel featuring the following Laguna graduates:

(Pictured from L to R)
Charlie Jacobs '20 – Cal Arts
George Nicks '22 – University of Rochester
Madeleine Nicks '22 – Vassar College
Frances Carlson – Pomona College
Mia Humberd-Hilf '20 – Columbia University
Izzy Sabino '19 – Cornell University
Lucy Cao '20 – UCLA

Upper School students and faculty attended an inspiring and motivating Q&A moderated by Head of Upper School Ms. Alkire. The shared sentiment of the group was how grateful they felt for their time at Laguna and how it prepared them well for college and enabled them to feel confident to write, study, and work collaboratively. Another shared comment was how much they appreciated the relationships they were able to develop with their teachers at Laguna and how it is much more difficult to authentically forge those relationships in college. The group encouraged current students to not feel too much pressure to pick the perfect school, as there are many options that could be a great fit for them. Thank you so much to our amazing alums for graciously sharing their time and wisdom with us this week!

HOW TO MODEL HEALTHY COPING SKILLS FOR CHILDREN
Click here to read an insightful article from Child Mind Institute about helping kids learn strategies for handling big emotions.

Painful feelings are unavoidable, but how we respond to them is a choice. And showing children how to cope effectively with uncomfortable emotions is one of the most important ways we can support their well-being and development.

A NOTE FROM MS. SMITH, AFTER SCHOOL CARE DIRECTOR
Happy New year, After School Care Families! Below I have included reminders and important updates for the After School Care program:

  • After School Care ends at 5:30PM. At that time, the expectation is that all parents have arrived.
  • If you arrive after 5:15PM, please park in the parking lot (rather than car line) and come to the designated location and sign out your child. Look for a sign in the lunch table area that will list the location.
  • To prioritize program cohesion and ongoing supervision, students cannot be picked up and then dropped off later during After School Care. Once picked up, students are signed out of After School Care for the remainder of that day.
  • As the days get dark earlier and it becomes much colder outside, expect to find us in the Library for sign-out.
  • On heavy rain days, you will typically find us indoors. Depending on the size of the group, After School Care will take place in the Library or the 3rd Grade classroom.
  • If you need to contact me before 3PM, please email jsmith@lagunablanca.org. During After School Care hours (3:30 - 5:30 PM), please call the After School Care cellphone number at 805.895.5025. I carry this cell phone with me at all times.

Thank you for your help in ensuring that the program runs smoothly! Please contact me with any questions.

CARSON STEWART'S DOUBLE-DOUBLE POWERS LAGUNA BLANCA
By Barry Punzal, Noozhawk Sports Editor

Carson Stewart '25 recorded a double-double of 22 points and 15 rebounds to power the Laguna Blanca boys basketball team to a 64-42 win over Newbury Park Adventist on Tuesday night.

The Owls shot 58% from the field and blew the game open in the second half.

Stewart shot 9 for 11 while center Eka Nayak '24 was 4 for 6 from the floor. He scored his eight points in the third quarter, most of them on pick and rolls with Michael Wang '23.

Wang scored 12 points, grabbed 9 rebounds, and dished out 7 assists.

“Mike has done an outstanding job of leading our team this year,” said coach Phil Sherman.

He also praised the energy that juniors Spencer Hlavaty '24 and Ganden Walker '24 bring to the team.

Laguna Blanca is now 5-3 on the season.
