April's Artist of the Month

During the month of April, we'll be showing the vibrant abstract artwork of Jessica Challan.

Please join us for an artist reception on Friday, April 4th between 6pm and 8pm.

Jessica Anne Challan-Spera has lived in Dutchess County her entire life. She has always considered art as a form of therapy and, as a mother, has used art as a way to help nurture and communicate with her two daughters. Her art is fun, bright and most importantly child-proof!

We are always looking for new artists who want to display their work in the Library! Please email programs@pvlibrary.org for more information.

Stitch 'n Fix

Tuesday, April 1st - 12pm to 1:30pm

Having a problem reading stitch directions or fixing a dropped stitch? Need a refresher to get started on your knit or crochet project? Come in, no registration required, and experienced stitchers will help. This is not a class to learn to knit or crochet, but a place to come and improve your needlework skills.

Bring a bag lunch if you'd like.

Experienced stitchers are encouraged to come and work on your current project in a friendly group, and provide a service to newer stitchers who need help.

Keeping Children Safe: Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse

Wednesday, April 9th @ 5pm

Traditional Okinawan Karate and Pleasant Valley Library are inviting the Center for Prevention of Child Abuse to train community members on how to keep children safe. Have you ever thought, “Something just doesn’t feel right”, when you see a situation involving a child but didn’t know what to do? The likelihood that you have encountered a child who has been abused is higher than you may think. In Dutchess County, over 1,000 cases of child abuse are reported each year and about 5x as many go unreported.

By taking this free one-hour training, you will learn how to recognize the warning signs of child abuse and neglect, how to respond when a child discloses, and how you are protected if you need to call in a report.

Registration is required. PLEASE NOTE: This program is for adults, parents, and caregivers only - content is not suitable for children.

FDR and the Post Office,

presented by Anthony Musso

Friday, April 11th @ 6pm

Author and historian Anthony Musso will discuss Franklin D. Roosevelt's lifelong passion for the Post Office and how it extended well beyond his boyhood stamp collecting hobby. Stricken with polio at age 29, FDR credited his involvement with stamp collecting and study as having saved his life.

As President, he implemented many stamp-related initiatives and approved more than 200 stamps released during his terms and actually designed several commemorative stamps. Roosevelt's Works Progress Administration, part of the New Deal program that created work for the nation's unemployed due to the Great Depression, was responsible for the construction of 406 Post Offices throughout the nation.
