Wetutoskimetowin eNEWSLETTER

In June 2023 Manitoba Education released its Treaty Education for All plan, the overarching goal being that all teachers, school staff, and students receive Treaty Education. A key component of the plan is that all K to 12 teachers must complete two-days of training by December 31, 2025. All other school staff are required to attend the first day of Treaty Education training. We are two weeks away from the end of the calendar year and the deadline!

As Treaty Education implementation continues and ongoing professional development ensues, please reach out to our team. We are here to support you!

Last month Indspire, the Indigenous national charity that invests in the education of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people, held their annual national gathering in Winnipeg. Treaty Education was honoured with the Guiding the Journey Award. Our team would like to thank our nominee, Frontier School Division, the folks at Indspire, and all of you who make our work meaningful every day!

Treaty Sleuthing: Spaces + Places

Nine Indigenous nations met in the Forks area in 1285 and formulated an agreement called the 1285 Peace Treaty which included thousands of Indigenous people camping and trading goods with each other along the shores of the Red River just north of the Forks grounds. Nistawayak, “Three Points”, is the original Cree name of the Forks.

Canadian Copyright - Information for Educators

Copyright rules for educators have changed significantly in recent years. While teachers have new opportunities to use copyright-protected materials in their lessons, they also have responsibilities. There are limits to what can be copied and communicated in the classroom. Teachers must know what they can and cannot do with the copyright-protected works of others.

Manitoba Education and Early Childhood Learning recently posted some helpful information and guidelines regarding teachers and copyright. CLICK HERE to access.

We have a course code!!

In 2018-2019, Treaty Education offered Manitoba schools a local-themed Treaty course for SIC registry. Since that time, over 250 Manitoba grade 12 students have attained credit in 'Grade 12: Treaties and the Treaty Relationship".

Manitoba Education has reworked the course and it is now an official social studies option entitled 'Land and Treaties: Relationships & Responsibilities'. The course code for credit registry is 0398.

Do you plan on teaching the new grade 12 social studies option centred on Treaties? Treaty Education has you covered!

Our team has curated a list of teaching resources for use in the 'Land and Treaties: Relationships & Responsibilities' course. The teaching resources are divided thematically by strands.

Indigenous Place Names

In Canada close to 30,000 official placenames are of Indigenous origin, and efforts are ongoing to restore traditional names to reflect Indigenous cultures.

As the original occupants of the land now known as Canada, Indigenous Peoples named the land and the features around them. Today, efforts are underway to restore traditional names to reflect the Indigenous culture wherever possible.
