BHA Board Meeting Recap

At the September 26 Board meeting, Executive Director Doug Jones reported the annual budgeting process is on schedule. As part of the budgeting process, staff is currently reviewing a three-year outlook of suggested major repairs extracted from the recent updated reserve study. The auditors are concluding the 2024 audit. Implementation and training for Vantaca, the new member software program, is currently underway. As mentioned in prior meetings, both the existing management software and the replacement, Vantaca, will operate simultaneously through the first quarter of 2026.

The Finance Committee noted that 98% of member assessments have been collected. ARC continues to operate smoothly, with praise for staff and new procedures, and staff is currently compiling a list of recommended updates to design guidelines for ARC Committee review later this year.

The Nominating Committee announced next year’s candidates for the two open Board seats: Bob Carter and Diane Mathews, with current President Christine Osborne seeking reelection. Information about the candidates will be published to the BHA website and media soon.

President Christine Osborne recognized the Salt & Oaks newsletter for fostering community engagement and shared news of the recent golf course renovations, noting the club’s importance to Bald Head Island life.

The next Board meeting is October 24th at 8:30 a.m.

Fall Fun with the Education and Recreation Committee

The Education and Recreation Committee (ER) was thrilled by the great turnout at the recent Tailgate Party Potluck Dinner and is already planning more ways to bring neighbors together this fall.

First up is "Trivia with Travis" from Old Baldy on October 13. Gather your team, brush up on little-known facts, and bring along your favorite casserole for the monthly potluck dinner. Details here.

Then, mark your calendars for Island Trick-or-Treating on October 25 from 1–3 p.m. Ghouls and goblins will be out in force, and residents and businesses are invited to sign up to hand out candy. If you’d like to participate, please register here by October 15. Thanks to the volunteers and businesses which make this a spooktacular holiday tradition.

Operation Reforest & Litter Sweep Return This Fall

The Resource Conservation & Beautification Committee (RCB) has two important community initiatives this season.

First up is the Fall Litter Sweep, co-sponsored by BHA, the Conservancy and Southern Living, on Saturday, October 25 from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Volunteers will meet in the parking lot near the Maritime Market to pick up supplies and receive their assigned cleanup areas. Everyone should return to the Conservancy by noon, where the collected trash will be weighed and prizes awarded for categories such as heaviest load and most unusual find. The Litter Sweep coincides with the Conservancy’s Southern Living Day, making it a perfect time to get involved. Details.

In addition, the Operation Reforest tree sale is underway, offering live oaks, yaupon hollies, and wax myrtles for November planting. Orders close October 31, so be sure to reserve your trees soon to help grow Bald Head’s canopy. Since 2019, Operation Reforest has helped replace trees lost to storms, honor loved ones, and add greenery to BHA Common Areas. You can explore past plantings on our website.

Special thanks go to the Resource Conservation & Beautification Committee and volunteers whose dedication helps keep Bald Head Island green and thriving.

CULTURE

A Quiet Hobby with a Big Impact

Hidden in Bald Head Island’s maritime forest, a hive of Italian honeybees hums with the activity of thousands of tiny wings working in unison. They’re tended by Scott Goodwin, who first came to BHI in 2003, bought a home in 2011, and moved here full time with his wife in 2021. Not long after, a mail-order box of bees arrived on his doorstep and sparked what’s now one of his favorite pastimes: beekeeping. Read more here.
