We can always use more folks on each Team, but we understand everyone is busy. If you'd like to be a leader or an "active listener" (someone who is on the email string and contributes when they have a free moment or when inspiration strikes) reply to this email.

PREG Website is Up

The PREG website is up and running. You'll find more information on current and future projects plus links to documents we've discovered as we research our historic buildings, and past Newsletters. It's a work in progress - hop on over then let us know what you think.

Town Center Parking and CHISPA

A development like ours has to meet lots of regulations to make sure all the rules are followed. Developers can produce some reports, and some need independent eyes. In EG, the developer's parking study raised a bunch of red flags for residents, and the Board of Supervisors agreed that an independent parking analysis is needed.

The PREG parking team presented our Resident Parking Study to Supervisor Root Askew, and will meet with the independent analyst in the new year. PREG will also have a Team working with the county Economic Development Agency on business opportunities in the Town Center.

Having resident input in this process is huge, and a big thank-you goes to Supervisor Root Askew and county staff for making this happen.

We also checked in recently with CHISPA (they're designing the affordable housing upstairs from the Town Center). They are in discussions with Century; it's a big project with lots of moving parts. CHISPA encouraged us to check in periodically - we'll let you know what we learn.

The goal is: a Town Center with enough parking for the folks who will live upstairs or come to the park, and for customers who might otherwise go to the new stores at the Dunes, without too much overflow onto nearby streets.

All the reports will soon be available on the PREG website, and as always, make your voice heard - see the list at the end of this newsletter.

MST Update

Just a quick update. Monterey Salinas Transit is working with our HOA. There will probably be an update at the next HOA meeting on 11/20. Plan to listen in!

Calling All Artists and Craftspeople

Wondering about the Historic Arts District? So are we! ArtSpace ran some workshops last year, but with just a few of us.

We need to know who our artists and craftspeople are, and how they might use the space.

What's your passion? From airbrush to ceramics to cookies to photography to weaving to web design and everything in between, please fill out THIS survey. The more artists and craftspeople we have the better, so spread the word!

You can find the results of the ArtSpace workshops HERE.

EG Appreciates the Bookmobile

Hopefully you've visited the bookmobile on a Saturday morning. To learn more about them we asked Hillary Theyer, Monterey County Free Library Director:

Bookmobiles have a proud history in serving Monterey County. The first County Librarian, Anne Hadden, founded libraries doing delivery by wagon, train, and muleback. For many rural communities, the Librarian bringing books and library items was their only personal contact with the County, with the deliveries bringing clothing, news, and medicine along with books and library materials.

Monterey County Free Libraries operates three bookmobiles. The North County Bookmobile, newest in the fleet, visits East Garrison. It is a custom body built onto a Ford truck chassis, and has solar panels and batteries that can run all the internal components (lights, air conditioning, computer) without turning on the engine or running a loud and fume creating exterior generator. This vehicle serves Pajaro through Spreckles with stops in Moss Landing, Carmel Highlands, Pebble Beach, Toro Park, and other places. Stops can be anywhere from adjacent to a park, a school parking lot, a community center, or an intersection. There is a South County Bookmobile serving Chualar through Bradley, and a smaller vehicle called the "Lean Green Reading Machine" that brings a children's collection and programs to schools and events.

Each bookmobile brings its own internet, with a robust connection that can hop among three providers as it moves around the County. The South County Bookmobile served as emergency internet access for the King City Fairgrounds when during a disaster and serving as an evacuation point, their internet access went down. Each vehicle can also "shoreline" to a building, letting the building power the internal components if the vehicle will be there for an extended period and cannot be driven for the engine to recharge the batteries.

Services available via bookmobile include all borrowing (getting a card, checking out, returns, browsing) and anyone can place holds to pick up on the bookmobile. Our staff can answer questions, do internet searches, place holds, and connect people with other services. During Summer Reading Club, we also ensure that bookmobiles have programs and activities. This may depend on the nature and amenities of each stop.

The bookmobile is among the most fragile of services. Because the vehicles are high in profile and we have to bring them to you, weather can be a reason we need to cancel a stop. The vehicles need to go in for regular maintenance, plus any other repairs, so stops may be cancelled due to the vehicle being unavailable. Depending on the notice, nature, and duration staff may bring holds in another vehicle and take returns, use a different bookmobile, or cancel the stop.

For stops, see our Calendar of Events and search for Library - Book Mobile North, or Library - Book Mobile South.

Ride the Bus on Rosa Parks Day

December 1, 1955 is the day Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on the bus. Monterey Salinas Transit will be FREE to everyone on Dec. 1st! This reporter suggests riding the bus on that day - though this year it's a Sunday and the 61 bus doesn't run on weekends. You could go to SCHEDULES to find a trip. When you get on the bus, admire the picture of Ms. Parks on a FRONT seat.

HOLIDAY HAPPENINGS

December 1, 2024 is the Holiday Tree Lighting 5:00 - 7:00 at the fire station. It's a great evening - bring an unwrapped gift for the toy drive if you can. See you there!

December 13 is Caroling Night 6:00 - 8:00pm. It's great fun to wander the neighborhood sharing songs of good cheer from many traditions.

On east-garrison.com you'll find meeting places and routes for each neighborhood, and a book of songs ready to go! If you can't come singing, be ready to stand at your door and listen.
