OCTOBER 2026

As the days grow shorter and the crisp autumn air settles in, Bergen Volunteers remains committed to bringing safety, comfort, and genuine human connection to neighbors who need it most. Through our community-driven programs, we match compassionate individuals with local residents seeking support, ensuring no one in our community has to navigate life’s challenges alone.

Warmth comes in many forms—a friendly home visit, a helping hand, or a shared smile—and that spirit of togetherness is at the heart of everything we do. Read on to learn about the many ways you can join us in bringing warmth to our neighbors this fall.

Be the Bright Spot in a Local Senior’s Week

Loneliness and social isolation have become a quiet epidemic among today’s seniors, but you have the power to bring joy and socialization back into a neighbor’s life.

When you volunteer with our CHEER program, you do far more than help with simple tasks like running errands or picking up groceries—you bring the priceless gift of human connection. Through weekly visits, shared laughter, and simple conversations, your efforts ensure a Bergen County senior can remain independent without feeling alone. By giving a little bit of your time, you can transform a senior’s life and remind them just how much their community cares.

Our next volunteer training is Friday, October 30, 10AM – 11AM. Be part of this special group by filling out our application today.

Making Birthdays Sweeter for Adults
with Disabilities

Two weeks ago, a team of volunteers from Tata Consumer Products in Montvale joined forces with us to assemble 100 "party-in-a-box" birthday bundles for adults with developmental disabilities served by Spectrum for Living.

Thanks to Tata Consumer Product’s generosity and dedication, 100 individuals will receive supplies for a festive celebration: cake mix, icing, balloons, candles, and cards. We’re profoundly grateful for corporate partners like Tata, who are committed to creating lasting impact in our community.

There’s Still Time to Celebrate 60 Years of Impact

For 60 years, you have made life-changing care possible for our neighbors across Bergen County. Because your support means so much to our community and the work we do together, we are extending the deadline for sponsorships, anniversary donations, and digital ad journal tributes for our 60th Diamond Anniversary Jubilee to October 29th.

Your generosity fuels every milestone we reach, and proceeds from the event will directly benefit all of our social service and civic leadership programs. Whether you partner as a sponsor, make a tax-deductible gift, or purchase a digital journal ad to honor our community’s leaders, your commitment directly transforms lives today. Join us in celebrating 60 years of impact at https://onecau.se/60diamondjubilee.

A Helping Hand from our CHORE Volunteers

We’re so grateful to our amazing CHORE volunteers for applying their talents right here in our office!

While they’re usually busy doing essential home safety repairs for seniors throughout Bergen County, they recently transformed an unused nook at the end of our hallway into a functional space for charging and storing their power tools. In doing so, they freed up a desk previously covered in batteries and equipment. Now, it’s clean and ready for a new office volunteer to use!

Bravo to this hardworking crew for continually finding smart ways to strengthen our mission and serve our community!

Financial Literacy Workshop

Late last month we held a free Financial Literacy Workshop, presented by Valley Bank. Valley’s team of experts dove into essential topics like building a budget, growing emergency savings, understanding credit scores, and managing debt. The attendees learned about tips and tools for managing their money to achieve long-term financial stability. We’re so appreciative of Valley Bank for partnering with us and sharing critical knowledge that will help our neighbors thrive!

Investing in Skill, Expanding Our Impact

Our staff recently participated in a thought-provoking professional development workshop led by David Ruchman, CEO of Powersolution, our valued IT services provider. The session focused on practical, time-efficient ways to leverage Google Workspace and Gemini AI to streamline our daily workflows. By continuing to build our skills and work smarter, we can dedicate even more time, energy, and focus to what matters most—serving our community!
