Summer is finally here!
I wanted to take the time to provide a fun-filled update on what Ward 3 residents can expect for this summer season.
To kick off the beautiful month of July I am thrilled to celebrate Canada Day at Celebration Square. If you and your family would like to attend the various events that are being put together by the City of Mississauga be sure to read the section of my update on community involvement/events where you can find all the details necessary.
If you and your family want to stay active this summer season enjoy our beautiful parks in the Ward and throughout the city. I have included an extensive update on what's new throughout our parks and recreation.

Ward 3- Parks and Recreation Update | |
Let’s Play in the Park is a free, half-day, fully supervised, outdoor drop-in program beginning on Monday, July 3, for children ages six to 12 years old. A mix of games, sports, crafts, theme days and special events will be organized to ensure a fun time! Participation is based on first come, first served basis, including registered and drop-in participants.

Stay Cool This Summer at the City’s Many Spray Pads
Feeling the heat? Residents are free to enjoy the spray pads through to September, weather permitting, but are reminded that the spray pads are unsupervised. Spray pads open daily at 9 a.m. Use the online map to find a spray pad in your neighbourhood.

Herbicide Treatment Notification - Wild Parsnip | |
Upcoming herbicide application by the Forestry Department through the use of Brinkman Living Infrastructure began on, June 27th, 2023.
Chemical control will be completed at the following parks. See below for more details:
· Applewood Hills
o Target species: Wild Parsnip
o Details: Treatment will occur along the entire length of Applewood Hills Trail, from south of Eastgate Parkway to southern most exists at Queen Frederica Drive. These areas were treated in 2022 with success, through re-treatment is needed for isolated plants.
· Shelby Park
o Target species: Wild Parsnip
o Details: Treatment will occur in the north part of the natural area, along the maintained trail where there are a few scattered populations of plants. These areas were treated in 2022 with success, through re-treatment is needed.
The herbicide being used is VisionMax (Glyphosate) and is sprayed using a handheld/backpack sprayer.
Please note: Both sites will have notice signs posted at all access points to the spray area at least 24 hours prior to treatment and will be removed no less than 48 hours after treatment. Treatment should be completed in 2 weeks, but may extend into further weeks as needed.

The most famous puppet in the world, Pinocchio, is coming to Mississauga. This world-wide acclaimed puppet show makes it’s North American debut this Summer. Fun for the whole family. The classic story of a wooden boy who wishes to become a real-boy, is coming to Mississauga. This new adaptation of Pinocchio, from Slovenia, takes us back to the very origins of the story. With a little bit of wood, some creativity and a little bit of stage magic, life is created.

Head down to Celebration Square this Canada Day to celebrate Canada’s birthday in style | |
This Canada Day, Mississauga is the place to be! Mississauga Celebration Square (MCS) has a jam-packed event in store for people of all ages to enjoy and celebrate Canada’s 156th birthday.
This year’s entertainment line-up features Canadian artists and a variety of activities. Cool off in the City’s largest outdoor fountain, enjoy roaming entertainers and snap a photo for the ‘gram with Peppa Pig, Bluey and Care Bears. Camp Canuck is back featuring a giant, interactive mural for the young Picassos of the future to unleash their creative side. You’ll want to save your appetite, as there will be a number of mouth-watering food truck vendors to keep your stomach happy all-day long.
To kick off the evening festivities, a ceremony will include greetings from Mayor Bonnie Crombie, Members of Council and special guests. The City’s Youth Poet Laureate, Lisa Shen, will perform one of her poems from the main stage. Event attendees are invited to re-confirm their Canadian Citizenship through a reaffirmation oath reading.
Co-hosts Emily Agard and Akil Augustine will keep you in the Canadian frame-of-mind all day long and the main stage will have you dancing and moving with the best in Canadian music, including Canadian favourite Jamie Fine and an unforgettable performance by headlining pop-sensation Faouzia. The show ends with a bang featuring a spectacular fireworks finale at 10 p.m.

Important event information
Parking and transportation
With limited access to available parking downtown, attendees are encouraged to carpool, walk, bike or take MiWay. Use MiWay’s trip planner to plan your destination.
Road closures
Road closures will be in effect in the downtown core from 10 a.m. to midnight on July 1. Areas impacted by the closures can be found on the event webpage.

Know an Outstanding Person in your Community? Nominate them for a Civic Award of Recognition | |
Starting today until August 21, nominations for the City of Mississauga’s Civic Recognition program will be accepted.
Exceptional individuals, community groups and businesses whose contributions help make Mississauga a great place to live, work and play are eligible for nomination in one of four categories as part of the 2023 Civic Awards of Recognition program.
Achievements are recognized in the following categories:
- Voluntary Community Service: individuals or groups that have improved the quality of life in Mississauga through volunteer efforts.
- Youth Community and Civic Engagement: youth between ages 14 and 24 who have contributed more than 140 volunteer hours to community or civic activities.
- Achievement in Sports: athletes or teams that have won championships at a city-wide, regional, provincial, national or international level.
- Achievement in Arts: artists or arts groups that have won competitions, juried shows or exhibitions. Outstanding accomplishments in academic fields may also be recognized.
If you know someone deserving of an award, the steps to recognizing eligible residents include:

You can only set off fireworks at home on the following holidays:
- Victoria Day
- Canada Day
- Lunar New Year
- Diwali
To set off fireworks on private property on any day other than these holidays, you’ll need to apply for a firework display permit.
Fireworks cannot be used on a public street, park or road without a permit. You should only buy fireworks from a licensed retailer.
How to apply
To apply for a firework display permit or for more information, call 905-896-5908 or email us at fire.prevention@mississauga.ca. We’ll tell you which application forms you need to complete and how much it’ll cost.
Applications must be sent to us at least 14 days before your event.

Depending on where fireworks are set off, you can make a complaint to the City.

TD Summer Reading Club
From Monday, June 12 to Saturday, September 2, children (ages three to 12) who register in person at a Mississauga Library location to take part in the 2023 TD Summer Reading Club, have the chance to win incentive prizes like stickers and stamps as well as an Early Bird, Weekly or Grand Prize.
This summer, the library is giving away over 180 incredible prizes such as new bikes, scooters, instant cameras and Canada’s Wonderland season passes! They are also doing weekly draws at all locations for tickets and passes to popular family destinations such as Cineplex, Wet ‘n’ Wild Waterpark, the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), Ripley’s Aquarium and more!

TDSRC Official Kick-Off Party
Join us for the TD Summer Reading Club kick-off party on the first day of Open Air Storytime taking place Wednesday, July 5 at 10:30 a.m. at the Amphitheatre at Celebration Square. Library storytimes and other engaging performers will take the stage at the Amphitheatre every Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. until August 30.
Book Buzz Reading Challenge
The Book Buzz Reading Challenge for teens and adults encourages you to challenge yourself to read widely by trying new books, authors and genres. To enter, simply track the books you’ve read in specific categories and then submit your list using the online submission form. While you have until Sunday, December 31 to complete the challenge, the summer can be a great time to get most of your reading done. If you read 12 books in the 12 different categories, you’ll have the chance to win a grand prize.

TD Summer Reading Club
The TD Summer Reading Club is Canada’s biggest, bilingual summer reading program for children of all ages, interests, and abilities. This program inspires children to explore the fun of reading during the summer months while celebrating Canadian writers and illustrators. It also assists with literacy development, confidence building and setting children up for future reading successes.

The Sauga Summer Pass is valid from July 1 to August 31 and offers free:

MiWay rides (for ages 12 to 16)

Drop-in fun swims at City pools (for ages 12 to 16)
- Fitness centre access (for ages 14 to 16)
Who can apply
To access free MiWay rides and swims, applicants must be between the ages of 12 to 16 (those born between May 2, 2006, to May 1, 2011) during the time of registration.

Submit the completed form at any City community centre
- Bring a piece of identification with you to verify your date of birth
Fitness centre add-on
If you are between the ages of 14 to 16, you can also access various fitness amenities on a first-come, first-served basis after registering with a parent/guardian. Those who turn 14 during the program can add this on or after their birthday.
Fitness centre access can be added to your Sauga Summer Pass by completing the following additional steps:
- Have a parent or guardian visit any community centre and complete the Eligibility for Youth Membership Consent form (available onsite) at the customer service desk
- Attend a Virtual Fitness Orientation session offered conveniently online throughout the summer. Choose one of the sessions below. Please sign in with the name used for your membership.
Additional sessions will be offered based on demand.

Peel Region offices and some non-emergency services will be closed for the Canada Day holiday on Monday, July 3, 2023.

TransHelp
To travel on Monday, July 3 and Tuesday, July 4, you must call 905-791-1015 and book by 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 2.
On Monday, July 3:
· Call us at 905-791-1015 if you need to cancel your trip.
· Flexible (same-day) trips will not be provided.
· All subscription trips will be cancelled, with the exception of dialysis trips.
· TransHelp will operate from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m.
· The TransHelp office will be closed and unable to process applications, payments, or feedback.
We offer bookings up to 7 days in advance. Consider booking your next trip early to ensure your holiday travel.

Increased GO train service on the Milton line to give you more options for your commute:
- In the mornings, an additional eastbound trip will depart Milton GO at 7:59 a.m., arriving at Union at 9:03 a.m.
- In the afternoon, an additional westbound trip will depart at 5:10 p.m., arriving at Milton GO at 6:12 p.m.
GO bus service changes
There will be new hourly weekday express trip options on GO Bus Route 21 between Lisgar, Meadowvale and Clarkson GO:

If you’re travelling between Lisgar, Meadowvale and Clarkson, you will save about 10 minutes on your commute. Some trips will depart up to 10 minutes earlier or later to maintain connections to Lakeshore West trains.

Express trips will not stop at Erin Mills Transitway or Streetsville GO. If you’re travelling to or from these stations, your service will be approximately hourly.
