SISD to Kick off New School Year on Wednesday

Get ready for the new school year! Students come back to school next Wednesday, August 14, and we can’t wait to kick off another year of learning and growth! Check out these links to help you navigate the first day and beyond:

Back-to-School Tips for Bus Riders

Sherman ISD provides bus transportation for students who live more than two miles from their zoned campus, and with the new school year beginning next week, here are important back-to-school tips for riding the bus:

  • Practice walking younger children to the stop and discuss the route they will take home.
  • Create an after-school backup plan. Many students may be confused if they step off the bus and something is out of the ordinary, like if no one is home or at the bus stop. This can involve contacting a parent or guardian or staying in a safe place.
  • Please anticipate possible delays, especially during the first week of school, which could be 15-45 minutes. You can track your child’s bus using the “Here Comes the Bus” app.

Schools Help Families Prepare for New School Year

From schedule pick-up to Meet the Teacher, our campuses are welcoming families for the new school year! Fred Douglass and Perrin held their Meet the Teacher event on Tuesday for our youngest learners, and our middle schools opened for schedule pick-up on Wednesday. Our elementary campuses are looking forward to their Meet the Teacher event tonight from 5:30 to 7 p.m.!

Board Names Dr. Thomas O’Neal Lone Finalist

for Superintendent

The Sherman ISD Board of Trustees named interim superintendent Dr. Thomas O’Neal as the lone finalist for superintendent of schools at a special meeting this week. O’Neal, an experienced school administrator with deep roots in the Sherman community, previously served as principal of Fairview Elementary and Sherman High School. He is entering his 32nd year in education with past experience as a deputy superintendent, chief financial officer, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction, assistant superintendent of human resources and high school principal in Anna ISD. He rejoined Sherman ISD in June 2022 as deputy superintendent.

“Dr. O’Neal is a longtime Bearcat, which gives him a deep understanding of our Bearcat legacy,” said Board President Wendy Vellotti. “Having previous experience at Sherman and then leaving and coming back gives him the outside experience that we need to keep moving our district forward.”
