NATIONAL RED WINE DAY
On August 28, National Red Wine Day ushers in the flavors of fall. As the grapes ripen and signal a time for warmer sips, wine drinkers know reds mean tailgating and spicy foods.
Throughout the year, wine days afford us the opportunity to taste and learn about the differences between wines. Earlier this month National Prosecco Day gave us the last bubbly rays of summer. Now we savor the best of the season with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot noir, Port, and Syrah.
Red wine varietals produce deep ruby reds as well as subtle ambers and browns. Their beautiful colors hint at the coming change in the season. With that, we can look for delicious menu changes, too. Besides, what better way to enjoy a great bottle of wine than by pairing it with excellent company and food. Restaurants around the country will be happy to oblige throughout the celebration. Be sure to check out the latest menus from appetizers to desserts.
Don’t fear the red, either. Even if you prefer a sweeter wine, there’s a red for you. Also, blends offer a way to enjoy the best of both wine worlds. And don’t fret. Red, red wine pairs well with salad, steak, dessert and so much more.
If you're hesitant, attend a wine tasting. There you will learn more each time and find the wine that fits not only your palate but your cooking style, too.

Driving in JP? Might want to let off the gas! New ticket machines issue quick citations
By Courtney P.
If you are living in Jefferson Parish, you may have noticed more cars being pulled over, but it isn't because more officers are on the road.
Technology is assisting JPSO for a more efficient way to ticket; cutting the total time of a traffic stop down, allowing officers to make more stops.
Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joe Lopinto says a new machine can print out a ticket in mere seconds allowing officers to initiate more stops.
“The main complaint we get is about traffic enforcement and we have to use our resources for other calls. We got a bunch of new ticket machines and have issued more tickets in the last two weeks.”
This is just one way technology helps out the department.
Lopinto says that his officers are finding more time to move to other calls.
“Instead of an officer spending ten minutes on a call, they scan the license, the ticket prints and goes to the court docket, and they are on to the next call.”

NEW ORLEANS, LA (August 2024) – The Nanny Network and Sidekick, renowned for providing reliable, best-in-class quality childcare and household assistance, are thrilled to announce their official launch in New Orleans, LA. With corporate headquarters in Baltimore, MD, and a strong market presence in Washington D.C., and Northern Virginia, The Nanny Network and Sidekick are now extending their trusted services to families and businesses across the Crescent City.
The Nanny Network has been a leader in providing in-home childcare and household management for 30 years. As families' needs evolve, Sidekick offers additional support, providing temporary household help through laundry service, errand service, grocery shopping, household pet care, and so much more. Ensuring that every family can find the right fit for their unique needs. In addition to serving individual families, The Nanny Network and Sidekick are proud to offer their services as a corporate benefit for companies looking to provide their employees with reliable childcare and household support. By partnering with businesses, they help companies enhance their benefits packages, improve employee satisfaction, and reduce absenteeism due to childcare challenges.
Ashley Hilsman, Vice President of the New Orleans Chamber of Commerce, highlighted the business impact: “Investing in childcare is a smart strategy for businesses. Companies that offer reliable childcare solutions see a significant return on investment through improved employee retention, reduced attrition, and higher overall productivity. The Nanny Network’s expansion into New Orleans provides a powerful tool for our local businesses to support their employees and build stronger, more resilient workplaces.”
Sunae Villavaso, Director of Workforce Development for the Mayor’s Office of New Orleans, added: “The launch of The Nanny Network in New Orleans is more than just a new service—it's a critical step toward creating jobs and fostering economic development in our city. By providing essential childcare and household support, The Nanny Network is empowering more families to fully participate in our workforce, driving job growth, and contributing to the much-needed economic revitalization of New Orleans. The city owes a great debt of gratitude to Nanny Network board member Julia LeBlanc and founder Dulany Dent, whose mission to reduce the gender wage gap is truly commendable. By empowering women, we uplift entire families and communities.”
The Nanny Network and Sidekick were founded on the principles of trust, reliability, and personalized care. With an expanding presence, the company remains dedicated to helping families find the support they need, allowing them to focus on what matters most.

Two tropical disturbances spotted in the Atlantic after quiet August, hurricane forecasters say
Hurricane forecasters are tracking two tropical disturbances in the Atlantic Ocean after a fairly quiet August in the tropics, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.
Forecasters said Wednesday morning that an area of low pressure is causing showers and thunderstorms a few hundred miles southeast of Bermuda. The system has a 10% chance forming into a tropical storm or depression within the next week, forecasters said. However, dry air and strong upper-level winds should limit further development in the next 24 hours while the disturbance moves northward to north-northeastward at 10 mph.
Another disturbance in the Atlantic was spotted Monday night. As of Wednesday morning, forecasters said that an area of low pressure could form in the central part of the tropical Atlantic in several days. As it moves westward to west-northwestward at a slow pace, the system could develop this weekend or early next weekend. It has a 20% chance of developing into a tropical storm or depression within the next week, but nearly a 0% chance of development in the next couple of days.
Neither disturbance poses an immediate threat to Louisiana. The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season runs between June 1 and Nov. 30.

For part of each year, the LHC provides collisions between lead ions, recreating conditions similar to those just after the Big Bang. When heavy ions collide at high energies they form for an instant the quark-gluon plasma, a “fireball” of hot and dense matter that can be studied by the experiments.

Oyster shell recycling program expands from New Orleans to Baton Rouge
The Associated Press
A conservation group’s program to collect and recycle discarded oyster shells from New Orleans restaurants has expanded to include restaurants in Baton Rouge.
The oyster shell recycling program has been around since 2014 — but until now, it included only New Orleans restaurants, WBRZ-TV reported.
Operated by the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana, the program dispatches a contractor to pick up a restaurant’s discarded shells twice a week. The shells are stored and eventually used to build reefs to restore Louisiana’s vulnerable, eroding coast. The new reefs also provide new breeding grounds for more oysters.
Three restaurants have already signed up for the program. Participating restaurants pay a fee for their shells to be collected and can later receive a tax break.
“Restaurants report that our program can reduce the frequency and cost of trash pick-ups and keeps kitchen and waste deposit areas cleaner and more organized,” CRCL says on its website.

NATIONAL CHERRY TURNOVER DAY
National Cherry Turnover Day on August 28 praises a tasty and sweet hand pie. These cherry-filled pastries are best enjoyed hot. However, like any pie, many eat them at room temperature, too. Add a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of ice cream. No doubt your enjoyment will be doubled.
Cherry turnovers are a pastry made by placing a cherry filling on a piece of dough. The dough is folded over and sealed. Then, the individual turnovers are baked or deep-fried for a golden and flaky crust. Tart cherries make the best pies. Since they need added sugar to be palatable, their juices meld with the sugar when baking. The results are tasty perfection!
A turnover a single serving. They fit nicely in a hand, making them portable. Another name for turnover is hand pie. However, we recommend a fork and plate when eating them piping hot.
Cherries on their own offer a bounty of nutrients. For example, the antioxidants in this red fruit protect cells from damage. Because cherries pack an anti-inflammatory punch, they may help reduce the risk of heart disease, too. Find out more about the benefits of cherries, tart or sweet at Nutrition and You.
FUN CHERRY FACTS:
- Related to plums, peaches, and nectarines, cherries are drupes or stone fruits.
- Cherries were brought to North America in the 1600s by the English colonists.
- There are more than 1,000 varieties of cherries in the United States.
- There is an average of 44 cherries in one pound.

Jeff Goad
St. Charles Avenue - New Orleans (1942)
Meyer the Hatter - 120 St. Charles Avenue
This shop was founded in 1894 by Samuel H Meyer.
Samuel was born in 1863 to German immigrant parents.
At the age of 14, he got his start as a delivery boy carrying hat boxes, all across the city.
In 1885, Meyer went to work for H. D. McCown a leading gentleman’s clothier in the city.
He began to travel to New York City to buy wholesale merchandise for the store.
It was here contacts were made and by 1894 he opened his own store, a tiny one room shop called Meyers Hat Box.
Going into business for himself was a necessity as Samuel was married now with six children.
His first deal was with the salesman for Stetson securing the new in-demand “hat that won the west.”
Through the first half of the 20th century, men’s and ladies hats were common place accessories.
The store has been able to weather the storm as hats began to decline.
As you look at the picture, you will see a fellow hat store next door that was not able to survive.
The simplest explanation for this decline was in the uptick of car ownership among the middle-class.
There was no longer a need to walk to work or take public transportation.
Cars also had low ceiling that did not accommodate hats very well.
With all the ups and downs, Meyer the Hatter has endured and is the oldest continuously owned hat store in the country.
The shop serves locals, tourists, celebrities, the film industry and of course Carnival season apparel.
I love the old pictures of people wearing their perfectly shaped hats. It brings a touch of class to that generation that will never be seen again

University of Holy Cross to hold Constitutional Carry & Self Defense Class August 29
Public confusion still swirls around Louisiana’s new firearm carry laws
New Orleans – The University of Holy Cross, in conjunction with Pierre Basic Guns, is hosting two gun safety and self-defense workshops on its Algiers campus on Thursday, August 29, 2024, to help Louisiana residents and the greater UHC community better understand the nuances of the new constitutional carry laws in the State of Louisiana and how the new laws impact their rights and responsibilities. Sponsored by the United States Concealed Carry Association (USCCA), these workshops are designed to educate the public on the legal aspects of self-defense and carrying firearms.
The workshops will be held on August 29, 2024, with two available sessions: 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. or 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Both sessions will be conducted at the University of Holy Cross Moreau Center, located at 4123 Woodland Drive in New Orleans.
Each session will last approximately two hours and is open to anyone 18 years and older who wishes to deepen their understanding of this significant legal change regarding the legalities of carrying a firearm in public.
“The need for clear and accurate information is greater than ever,” says University of Holy Cross Police Chief and Director of Public Safety Marshall E. Pierre, Sr. “We are excited to host these informational workshops so our community can feel more educated and empowered about self-defense, especially around the subject of carrying firearms.”
Participants will gain valuable insights into their rights and the best practices for responsible gun ownership and self-defense. These sessions aim to empower attendees with the knowledge needed to navigate the legal landscape confidently and responsibly.
The workshops will cover critical topics such as:
- The implications of being armed in public
- Staying safe by avoiding danger
- Pre-threat indicators
- De-escalation
- Using force
- Seeking further training
- Differences between carrying with a permit vs. without a permit in Louisiana
"I have conducted several of these events, and I've found that many participants are often unaware of the specifics of the law, including what constitutes a justified act of self-defense," says Pierre Basic, founder of Pierre Basic Guns. "One of the most surprising aspects for attendees is learning about the restriction on carrying within 1,000 feet of a school zone without a permit."
To register for a session or to learn more about the workshop series, please contact Pierre Basic Guns at (555) 123-4567 or visit their website at www.pierrebasicguns.com.

Join the award-winning (1st place, baby!) NOLA Jitterbugs for a 6-week series with live music in the last class!
Our live music classes with local musicians and culture bearers, as well as our overall emphasis on music appreciation is what makes our lessons stand out among the rest!
Starts at The Contemporary Arts Center!
6-7pm Intro to Swing
For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.
7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level
This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.
No partner required to take either of these classes. Come alone or with friends!

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon, August 19
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

It’s Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s Manchac & Middendorf’s Slidell! Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September, handmade paper-thin fettuccine is on the menu.
This mouth-watering dish is served with your choice of classic Alfredo or Marinara Sauce and topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese with optional add-ons of shrimp, crabmeat and chicken.
- Fettuccine with Alfredo Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
- Fettuccine with Marinara Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
- Optional add-ons:
- Shrimp
- Crabmeat
- Chicken
- Side of Fettuccine topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
Fun Facts:
- Our handmade, paper-thin fettuccine was a guest favorite at Bella Luna in the French Quarter. Bella Luna was a fine dining restaurant owned and operated by Horst and Karen Pfeifer. It closed due to Hurricane Katrina and never reopened. The memory of Bella Luna lives on through Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s. Same Pasta. Same Taste. None of the Fancy.
- Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer makes the fettuccine from scratch which consists solely of Semolina flour and eggs. It’s a very time consuming process to make the fettuccine so paper-thin, but it’s definitely worth it.
- Fettuccine is available all day (lunch and dinner).
- Our full menu is also available.
- Uncooked fettuccine is also available for purchase to make a quick meal at home.
We hope you can join us for Fettuccine Frenzy — Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September!
