PEER SUPPORT JOBS
The Advocacy Director implements and oversees Cal Voices’ coordinated advocacy activities, focusing on the needs and priorities of two key constituencies in California’s Public Behavioral Health System (PBHS): (1) Peer Support workers (Peers); and (2) Consumers of public behavioral health services (Clients). To accomplish this, the Advocacy Director directs Cal Voices’ California Association of Peer Professionals (CAPP), which advances the collective interests of Peers throughout the state. The Advocacy Director also builds and maintains the agency’s grassroots coalition of Clients, advocates, civil rights organizations, and other like-minded groups and individuals who share Cal Voices’ core values and policy positions, and activates members of this coalition to participate in public decisions and make their voices heard. The Advocacy Director works closely with Cal Voices’ Executive Leadership Team, including the Executive Director, Associate Director, Policy Director, and Education Director, providing critical feedback and guidance to the agency, educating managers, advocates, and stakeholders about the impacts of behavioral health laws and policies on the agency, its programs, its employees, and the people it serves. The Advocacy Director represents Peers and Clients in public meetings and hearings, develops creative messaging and educational campaigns, leads collective advocacy efforts, and manages contracts that fund these activities. Accordingly, the Advocacy Director must demonstrate advanced skills and subject matter expertise in behavioral health advocacy, Peer employment issues, outreach and engagement, community organizing, and coalition building.

Advocacy Director must have personal lived experience of recovery from a behavioral health challenge; share Cal Voices’ organizational values and positions on key issues; and possess credibility with behavioral health Peers, Clients, and diverse/marginalized communities.

Qualified individuals who have received public behavioral health services in any California county, are bilingual/bicultural, and/or identify as members of traditionally underserved populations (BIPOC, LGBTQ+, veterans, immigrants, refugees, former foster youth, previously unhoused, past involvement with the criminal legal system, etc.) are strongly desired. Spanish language fluency is also desired.

In addition, the PCT performs a wide variety of administrative and computer-oriented tasks for the WISE U program, including reviewing online training applications and enrollment data, disseminating program information and announcements, responding to phone and email inquiries, interfacing with participants through Cal Voices’ online Learning Management System (LMS), etc. The PCT also provides career coaching and mentoring to participants from a variety of cultural, racial/ethnic, socioeconomic, and educational backgrounds, and conducts outreach and engagement activities to recruit training participants and promote Cal Voices’ subject matter expertise in peer education and employment matters. Knowledge of the structures and functions of California’s Public Behavioral Health System (PBHS), self-help and recovery principles, core competencies and best practices for the delivery of peer services, and consumer employment issues are required.
