[ Meet ~ Monica Denevan ]
Monica Denevan is a San Francisco-based photographer that has been photographing fisherman and their families in the same small villages in Burma/Myanmar for over twenty years. Denevan's work has been widely exhibited including solo shows at Scott Nichols Gallery and Duncan Miller Gallery, and on The Strand Cruise ship in Burma. In 2020, she received a Svane Family Foundation grant and was the All About Photo Awards first place recipient.

Top 3 Finalist, FOCUS photo l.a. Summer 2020

A finalist of FOCUS photo l.a. Summer 2020 edition, Monica Denevan's winning image 'Galleon, Burma' (2013) is part of a larger ongoing series 'Songs of the River: Portraits from Burma" which began at the end of a long trip to South-East Asia in 2000. When she finally slowed down and stayed in one place, Denevan made intimate portraits of the people she was spending most of her time with, in quiet, rural areas on the Irrawaddy River. The river was stark, minimal, and ever-changing, and became another subject in Denevan’s images along with the elegant, physicality of those she photographed. Year after year she returned, getting to know some of the culture where the vibration of Buddhism, and the force of the military regime, then and now, affected almost everyone’s daily life. However, it was the personal connections Denevan made with a few families that inspired her to continue her series.

OUR MISSION
For 30 years, photo l.a. has celebrated and brought together the photography / art community from around the world. It is with this mission that we present FOCUS photo l.a., a biannual competition open to help provide emerging and mid-career artists / photographers a platform to promote their work and expand their career opportunities.


THE COMPETITION
FOCUS photo l.a. is open to artists / photographers working in all themes, types, and genres of photography. Entrants can submit a MAXIMUM of ten (10) photographs for consideration. Top 20 Finalists are determined by a panel of renowned art photography experts who will select the Top 20 photographers from the completed submissions.
All finalists will have his or her winning photograph professionally printed by our partner The Icon and expertly framed for live exhibition at a special Los Angeles pop-up!
All finalists will also be invited by our partner Open Show for the chance to present their projects at a special live programming event during the Los Angeles exhibition ~ please note, final shortlist of artist talk presentations will be curated by organizers for scheduling purposes.
NEW IN 2021 ~ One (1) Grand Prize Winner will be selected from the Top 20 Finalists by the jury to receive a $1000 cash award!
