Veterans Services Office Unveils 70 Hometown Hero Banners at Annual Veterans Day Celebration

This Veteran's Day, the Veterans Services Office gathered the community on the Town Green for their annual Veterans Day celebration and the unveiling of 70 new Halifax Hometown Heroes Banners. As the Halifax Council on Aging (COA) posted about the ceremony, Veterans Services and Director Steve Littlefield "displayed a Nation of Stars: past, present, and current Veterans who shined." Set to be hung up all throughout town following the assembly and unveiling, the banners will serve as a reminder of the continued dedication of our U.S. Armed Forces and as an everyday tribute to our gratitude as a community.

Among the heroes commemorated, the Halifax Police Department honored some of its own veterans for their service: Deputy Chief Theodore Benner, U.S. Marine Corps; Sergeant William Caprio, U.S. Navy; Sergeant Robert McDonnell, U.S. Coast Guard; Sergeant Patrick Sterling (Retired), U.S. Marine Corps; and Officer Ryan Simpson, U.S. Army. The Halifax Council on Aging also honored its own Frederick Corrigan, who continues to serve the senior community.

Thank you to everyone who attended and participated in the annual Veterans Day celebration, including the Halifax Fire Department, Halifax Police Department, Town Administrator Cody Haddad, the Board of Selectmen, the Council on Aging, and all members of the community. Most of all, thank you to Halifax Veterans Services for hosting this beautiful ceremony and for your commitment to serving and honoring our veterans. Historical Tidbit:

From the Memoir of Halifax's Sylvanus Bourne

"... Then in 1861, April 15, our Company had orders to report in Boston at once to go South. Word come to me while I was kindling my fire in the morning. I dident stop to finish kindling my fire, but put on my Uniform and started for Boston.

[off to war]:

Went in on the first train from Halifax. There was great excitement in Boston, for the Rebels had fired on Fort Sumpter [sic]. We stayed in Boston over Night in the Hall over the Old Colony Depot. The next day we went on board the Steamer S.R. Spalding [sic] for Fortress Munroe [sic]. Gov. Andrew visited us while we were in the Hall.

When we arrived at Fortress Munroe, Col. Dimmick was in Command. He was awfully pleased to see us. We arrived in the fort about 11 o'clock A.M. and Stacked arms. They brought us out a lunch. Before we got through eating, orders come for us to pack our Knapsacks and take 3 days rations for a march."

Climate Can Do:

Drinking Water Without Nano-plastics

Plastic water bottles are filled with tiny bits of plastic called nano-plastics. These are bits of plastic that have broken down so small we cannot see them. But they are there, according to studies by Consumer Reports, Columbia University, University of Missouri, and many others.

The best way to avoid drinking nano-plastics is to use a metal or glass reusable bottle and fill it with filtered tap water.

Reusable water bottles keep you healthy and decrease one major source of nano-plastics in our environment: the disposable water bottle.

Pumpkin Painting at the Holmes Public Library

On October 26th, the Holmes Public Library hosted some festive pumpkin paintings. With a generous donation of pumpkins from Nessralla Farms, the library made their very own Pumpkin Patch. Children of all ages got to pick a pumpkin from the patch, paint and decorate it, and bring it home to share and display. The day's festivities put everyone in the Fall spirit!

As a thank you, the library posted a poster reading "Thank you for the pumpkins Nessralla Farms!" for all the kids to sign. Filled with messages of thanks and expressions of fun, the poster serves as a reminder of what the holidays are all about coming together, giving back to one another, and practicing gratitude. Thank you to Nessralla Farms and Holmes Public Library for organizing this fantastic event!

Shop Small

There are oh-so-many benefits to shopping the small local stores in your neighborhood (and even on-line):

  • Your opinion matters. Small businesses provide greater access to product diversity. If they don't have what you want, ask for it. My questions are always along the line of: "Can you tell me where this was made, who made it and how the materials were sourced?"
  • Small Businesses give back to the local economy. According to Civic Economics, “on average, 48% of each purchase at local independent businesses is recirculated locally, compared to less than 14% of purchases at chain stores.”
  • Personalized attention (who doesn't like being pampered?)
  • Small Businesses give back to local organizations. They sponsor the kids sports teams, the school plays and everything in between.

And finally, it feels good to shop locally! You're making dreams come true.
