August 2024 Newsletter
Hello Villagers!
As we roll into the heart of summer, don't forget to hop on Humboldt Transit Authority's (HTA) complimentary public transportation to explore the beauty of Humboldt County. Enjoy a leisurely drive or head to exciting events like the upcoming "Rumble Over the Redwoods" show at the California Redwood Coast Humboldt County Airport in McKinleyville. It's a fantastic opportunity for seniors and their families to engage with the community and create lasting memories!
At Redwood Coast Village, we are eagerly anticipating a lineup of exciting events that bring our community together, including the Humboldt Bay Marathon Races, the Trinidad Bay Art and Music Festival, the dog-friendly "Woofstock" on the bay, the Sunday Art Market, Concerts in Arcata, and the beloved Humboldt County Fair.
These gatherings not only offer fun and entertainment but also embody our commitment to fostering caring and healthy communities for seniors. Participation in events like the Humboldt Bay Marathon Races aligns perfectly with our mission to enhance the quality of life for older adults by promoting intergenerational relationships and community engagement.
See you next month!

Saved by Ingenuity!
When member Gloria Remington had a pesky problem to solve, an unexpected visit by an RCV member/volunteer saved the day!
Gloria had a torn screen that covers her small fish pond and protects them from the critters. She was unable to find a replacement lid for it and had just about given up hope when the volunteer Cindy Humphry had an idea!
"With Gloria's participation and some netting, tools, and wire from my garage we were able to accomplish a top she was happy with," explained Cindy. "She had a surprise for me as she had baked a small cake!"
If you'd like to become an RCV Volunteer, it's really easy, just give us a call! 707-4439747 x1283

Interesting Information from Village Movement California!*
villagemovementcalifornia.org
Across the Golden State California's Aging Landscape:
The Growing Importance of Villages
As we approach 2030, California's demographic landscape is changing dramatically, emphasizing the crucial role of village communities in supporting our aging population. According to a recent presentation from the California Department of Aging, the state's older adult population will continue to grow, making up an increasingly larger share of California's residents.
- By 2030, 10.8 million older adults will call California home, representing 25% of the population.
- By 2060, adults 60+ are projected to be nearly a third of the state's population, up from 14% in 1980.
- The 80+ age group is expected to grow from 2% in 1980 to about 10% by 2060. This demographic transformation presents a complex set of opportunities and challenges for our communities. While we celebrate increased longevity, we must also address the evolving needs of our aging population:
In the face of these projections, villages are poised to play a pivotal role in supporting California's older adults. Our unique model offers tailored solutions to meet the diverse needs of our aging population:
• Rooted in local communities and cultures.
• Providing personalized, culturally appropriate support.
• Offering a community-based approach to aging services.
Village Movement California remains committed to expanding our network statewide, ensuring every older Californian has access to the community support they need to thrive.
Together, we can build a future where aging is celebrated and supported in every community across our diverse state.
* Redwood Coast Village, a participating member of Village Movement California, continues to expand our service area in order to support Humboldt County's aging population. We welcome new volunteers and members especially in the Eel River Valley!
