From the desk of Father Al

Dear friends in the Lord,

For countless ages from the beginning of the world, men and women found their existence to be merely a toilsome journey from birth to death. Gradually, in many cultures and in fragmentary ways, the human family caught glimpses of the God of creation and of the purpose of their lives.

Then, in one startling moment of human history, Jesus of Nazareth, the Son of the Living God, revealed to his disciples that the journey was charged with beauty and meaning, a pilgrimage of sacrificial love to abundant life with his eternal Father.

We in the Roman Catholic Church consider that we have been uniquely blessed as descendants of those first disciples—blessed with Sacred Scripture, the celebration of the Sacraments, and a world-wide communion of a billion-and-a-half fellow pilgrims led by the successors of the Apostles.

If you are not presently a member of the Catholic Church, we at the Basilica invite you to come and see how this ancient faith is lived in the lives of contemporary Catholics.

Next Sunday, June 14, we will begin Inquiry sessions for adults who wish to know more about the Catholic faith. Each month during the summer, there will be two meetings on Sunday mornings following the 10:00 Mass and two meetings on Thursday evenings on Zoom. Visit the “Becoming Catholic” page of the parish website sacredheartatlanta.org/OCIA for more information.

If you are already an active member of another faith community, please know that we respect and value that commitment; it is not our intention to proselytize. If, however, you have no church family to call your own, we warmly invite you to inquire with us. Be certain that a warm welcome awaits you.

Your brother in Christ’s word and work,

Father Tri John-Bosco Nguyen

Archbishop Hartmayer has appointed Father Tri John-Bosco Nguyen as pastor and rector of the Basilica, effective July 20. Monsignor Jowdy will return to retirement on the same date.

Father Tri is a native of Vietnam, where the Franciscan priests and sisters at his local parish were an early inspiration to him. He arrived in the United States in 1993.

Tri graduated from Seton Hall University with a Bachelor of Science degree in secondary education and theology and earned a Master of Arts degree from Georgia State University in applied linguistics and in teaching English as a second language. He taught and counseled young people in various schools in the Atlanta area before responding to a call to the priesthood.

He studied with the Salesians of St. John Bosco before applying for priestly formation with the Archdiocese of Atlanta and attending St. Vincent Seminary in Latrobe, Pennsylvania.

Father Tri was ordained to the priesthood on June 2, 2012. He served as parochial vicar at St. Peter Chanel parish in Roswell and at St. Brigid parish in John’s Creek, before being appointed Director of Vocations for the Archdiocese in 2018. Since 2021, he has been pastor of Our Lady of the Mountains parish in Jasper.

Please keep Father Nguyen in your prayers as he prepares to begin his ministry among us.
