What Is Passiontide?

Passiontide begins on the Fifth Sunday of Lent. This first week is known as “Passion Week” and leads us to Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion; the second is known as “Holy Week” and leads us to the glory of Easter.

Why are the Saints and Statues Covered?

The passion of the Lord dominates these solemn days. The tradition of covering statues reminds us that it is Jesus’ death and resurrection that make saints possible. We stop our normal devotions for a while to remember that Jesus is the model of all sanctity. Put simply: if Jesus was not risen from the dead, there would be no saints. Indeed, the very practice of devotion to the saints is to lead us more readily to Christ. A cloth may also be used to drape the cross. This draws our attention even more clearly to the drama of the cross as relayed in the reading of the Passion Narrative in the Gospel: the central mystery in the drama of our salvation. Catholics can also cover statues and icons in their homes during this time.

What is the Triduum?

The Paschal Triduum is three-days-in-one that begins on the evening of Holy Thursday, flows through Good Friday and Holy Saturday, and ends on the evening of Easter Sunday.

📰 News

During the Easter Season, we will formally welcome new people into the Catholic Church who have engaged themselves in the process of Adult Christian Initiation. We welcome those joining from other Christian denominations as well as Catholics receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation. Here are some of their stories.

From Jess Yoon

As I move towards full reception into the Catholic Church, I hope for an ever-present awareness of God, deeper kinship with Christ and the tradition of our faith, and fulsome participation in the sacramental life of the Church and service to others.

From Robert Weeks

I am joining the Catholic Church because I’m drawn to its 2,000 years of wisdom and tradition. I want to provide that spiritual anchor for my family. I want us to grow together in a faith that has stood the test of time, so we have a steady compass to guide us through life.

Greetings from Lokitaung and St. Mark's Parish

We are grateful to God who has enabled us to begin the Lenten season well. We also wish you good preparations as we approach Easter festivities.

We thank God that you came out of the freezing Winter season. Here in Lokitaung, it's been warm, but the rainy season seems to be beginning. Pray for us because it usually destroys a lot of property and even causes loss of lives.

We continue to wait for your coming to Lokitaung. We have just ended a week in which we were having you as our main intention. Let us keep each other in prayers.

Blessings blessings blessings.

Fr. Edwin

Mass Intentions

It has been a long tradition in the Church to offer Masses for people to pray, especially for the dead, seeking God’s grace, mercy, and spiritual benefits through Christ’s sacrifice. Usually a modest donation is given for this. In the coming weeks we have several Masses with no particular intentions. If you would like to have a Mass offered for someone (living or deceased), email the parish office at info@oratorychurch.org or click here.
