President's Message

    by Susan Kiehnau, President

We’ve had a busy autumn at the Yarmouth Port Library. Our traditional Spaghetti Supper was held on Sunday, October 27 at Jack’s Outback. This year marked the first time Jack’s Outback’s new owner Luis Calle did the Spaghetti Supper, and the feedback has been wonderful: Caesar salads, garlic bread, and pasta with a choice of three different sauces. The food was delicious, and the meal finished with homemade desserts. A nice evening was had by all! Thanks, Luis and your staff! Thanks also to all of our bakers, servers, and other volunteers who helped to make this annual event a success.

We’re gearing up for winter at the library. We will continue with our programs on Friday afternoons, and we have some wonderful speakers on our schedule for the winter months. We will kick off 2025 with realtor Tiffany Callahan and a panel of experts on aging at home on January 24. Check out the library’s website and bulletin board for other upcoming programs.

Our December event is the Christmas Stroll on Sunday, December 8th from 1 to 4 PM. Please stop by YPL when you come to the Stroll. We will be serving cookies, tea sandwiches, and punch, and we’re excited to have a special guest with us, Mrs. Claus!

We have met with local architects, Catalyst Architecture and Interiors, to discuss how we may improve our facilities. The architects are preparing a report to help keep our facility up-to-date and the space optimized. We will keep you posted!

Please watch for and reply to our annual fund-raising membership letter. Your financial support is essential to operating the Yarmouth Port Library, a public library that is privately funded. Thank you all, in advance, for your generous gifts.

Wishing you and your families a wonderful holiday season and we look forward to seeing you all in the New Year at the Yarmouth Port Library.

Administrative Director’s &

Children's Services Report

by Carrie Bearse, Administrative Director & Children's Services

One Afternoon in Maine

One afternoon last September, with my dog George at my side, I was sitting on the deck of Periwinkle Cottage in Downeast Maine overlooking East Penobscot Bay, reading a book, one of six that I read during my week there. When I glanced down at my Fitbit, I saw that my heart rate was a very low 56 bpm. Oh, my! Total relaxation…total lack of stress…total concentration. Now, part of that probably came from the fabulous location and being on vacation, but most certainly much of it came from the fact that I had the time, and was making the time, to read.

I cannot tell you the number of times people come to the library desperate for something to read, having just finished a book. We have a wonderful volunteer and board member who said she actually gets grumpy if she hasn’t had time to read. Reading is one of the simple luxuries we can have in our lives right now, and always. Making time to read is one of the most important things we can do for our mental and physical health. We all live busy lives, and it is often easy to be overwhelmed and overscheduled with work activities, household chores, yardwork, etc. In my case, I always come home from work to a sweet pup that needs a walk and my attention. For relaxation, I also need my game of tennis once a week, to go for a run several times a week; and then I do still need to get to those household chores and participate in community activities. The handsome gentleman in charge of Viking Cruise Lines really does make a good point…we only have a limited amount of time, so we must use it wisely. I am sure the cruises are lovely, but I think the most important thing we can do for ourselves is make time to read here and now. Although, sometimes it may be easier to make that time outside of your home where there are fewer distractions. You can always stop by YPL to sit for a bit and read. We have a lovely reading room, with a comfy fire when a chill is in the air, and many little nooks for solitary reading and relaxation. We can always recommend something to read, as our staff and volunteers are avid readers (not surprising!); or, you can peruse our shelves to see if something catches your interest.

Of course, after all of this, I am perhaps preaching to the choir, since many of our patrons seem to value reading and this sweet little library, too. For that we are ever thankful. So, during these upcoming winter months and beyond, try to make time to read and you will be richly rewarded on many levels. Allowing yourself to sit down, open a book and read is extremely therapeutic, and who knows – your heart rate may go right down, no matter where you are.Enjoy the season and hope to see you soon – if not at the library, perhaps up in Downeast Maine!

          Always with gratitude, Carrie Bearse

Summer Book Sale Donations Resume in January

While the library has continued to receive donations of newer books for its ongoing sale in the Spiral Staircase area, we had suspended larger donations of older books. We expect to resume receiving those donations in January, on Monday afternoons from 1 to 3 PM, starting on January 6th.

To avoid repeated trips to the recycling containers at the town dump, we ask that people try to follow the guidelines we set up last year.

Briefly, we welcome children’s and adults' books in reasonably good condition (no damage, soil, mildew); please don’t bring clearly outdated non-fiction on subjects such as finance, older travel guides, medical or technical books, etc. No encyclopedias or textbooks.

New England and Cape Cod history is always appreciated.

by Les Peat, Membership Campaign Chair

As 2024 nears its end, the Yarmouth Port Library will again be asking for your support for its annual Membership Campaign. Renewal letters for 2025 will be going out on or around December 1st. All donations help fund our Operating Budget, and function to fill the gap between our costs and other sources of revenue. We hope that you will consider what the library means to you, your family, and to the community, and support us as generously as in the past.
