The Americas - Rapid Growth in the Caribbean
Dominican Republic
The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) recognized the Dominican Republic as the number one country in the world in tourism recovery.
“The Caribbean example is not just about showing a great example of a region recovering but instead about a region that is growing – despite all the macroeconomic factors taking place now such as the slowdown of the world economy, rising costs of petrol and the effects of the war in Ukraine, “says Olivier Ponti, VP of Insights at ForwardKeys.
In Q4 the tourism numbers accelerate further, well across many nations. Leading the way in terms of overseas arrivals is the Dominican Republic, 40% up on 2019 levels, followed by the US Virgin Islands (+33%), Bonaire (+30%), and Martinique (+26%).

Curacao, Bonire, and Saint Lucia - attracting new traveler types
Faring particularly well this year are Curacao and Bonaire, experiencing a wider hunger for each respective destination thanks to a rise in affluent premium class travellers, varied origin markets (North America, Europe, and Latin America) and travel purposes.
“Premium cabin travel to the Caribbean in Q3 is up 27% versus the pre-pandemic. To Curacao and Bonaire, we can see a triple-digit increase versus 2019 levels: +120% and +110%…this is huge and especially good news not only for the airlines and hotels but for the goods and services sector.”
“This is an exact result of our Tourism Recovery Plan and our strategy to target and reach the affluent traveller seeking an eco-conscious vacation experience. Tourism plays an important role in our economic recovery and these data results and findings are our guiding force as we plan,” says Miles Mercera, CEO of the Tourism Corporation of Bonaire.
A further sign that times are changing is that affluent travellers are flying from both North America and more recently, South America.
In Q4 the Caribbean is extremely popular with Colombians. There is a 54% change in arrival numbers versus the same time in 2019. While Curacao can see a +304% change from Argentina!
Further digging reveals that Curacao is also a growing honeymoon destination – ForwardKeys’ Air Ticketing Data reveals the number of two passengers flying is up by 42% in Q4 this year versus 2019 levels.
Lastly, some Caribbean destinations are even managing to attract the non-leisure market. Throughout the region, business travel is returning and in growth mode. Saint Lucia is up by 22% in business travellers in Q4 this year versus 2019 levels, an achievement as the destination has tried hard to interest more business events.
These are highlights of the presentation Olivier Ponti gave at the CHTA Marketplace last week about the rapid growth in the Caribbean.

Noticeable Trends in Asia Pacific
- Olivier Ponti, Vice-President Insights, ForwardKeys
| |
|
1. Increased affluent travelers and opportunity for luxury travel: premium class travellers are leading the recovery. South Asian destinations such as Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Maldives are seeing high numbers of affluent visitor arrivals, benefitting from the multiplier effect of affluent travelers plus luxury travel.
2. Mid-long-haul travel is reviving faster than short haul travel: short-haul travel is recovering slower due to a lack of connectivity, which will lead to a destination’s lost opportunity of longer stays and higher spending to transfer points - a critical bottleneck for APAC to recognize and address
3. Increased long-haul, multi-destination travel: markets near trending destinations (e.g. Japan, Qatar) will benefit from the trend. That said, APAC can support its own recovery if dysconnectivity has been ironed out.
By taking lessons from the US and Europe, APAC’s recovery can be quicker and of higher quality despite coming later than the rest of the world.

Thailand
One of the most important public holidays on Thailand’s calendar honors the birthday of late King Bhumibol Adulyadej on 5 December. His Majesty is fondly remembered for his kindness and compassion and inspirational role as a model father for the kingdom.
Besides the highly revered monarch’s birthday, this is also a special day to mark the contribution of the nation's fathers with a Father’s Day holiday.
Although Christianity is not the main religion across Southeast Asia and not an official public holiday in many countries, it is still celebrated with pomp and style.

Gastronomy in Barcelona, Catalan Cuisine
|
Spain is home to a myriad of delicious traditional foods, sweets, and unique dishes. While each region of Spain has a unique cuisine, Barcelona is the ultimate destination. Not only is Barcelona one of Spain's best cities to live in but also one of the best Spanish cities for food.
Heavily influenced by neighboring France and Italy, Catalan cuisine is truly Mediterranean, stemming from both the land and sea. Catalonia, centered along the eastern coast of Spain, has a cuisine all its own.
Traditional Catalan cuisine is quite diverse, ranging from pork-intensive dishes cooked in the inland part of the region (Catalonia is one of the main producers of swine products in Spain) to fish-based recipes along the coast. These meat and seafood elements are frequently fused together in the Catalan version of surf and turf, known as mar i muntanya. Examples include chicken with lobster (pollastre amb llagosta), chicken with crayfish (pollastre amb escarmalans), rice with meat and seafood (arròs mar i muntanya) and cuttlefish with meatballs (sipia amb mandonguilles).
No visit to Spain would be complete without having one of its quintessential dishes: paella. Purists say the Valencian version is the most authentic, but this seaside staple is done just as well in Barcelona
Cava is Catalonia's sparkling wine and point of pride for Catalan winemakers. The region of Catalonia is one of the only places where cava can be officially produced (similar to champagne and the region in France) and about 95% of cava is produced in the Penedès region in Catalonia.
The absolute number 1 attraction in Barcelona Spain is the Sagrada Familia; the holy cathedral designed by Antoni Gaudí. The unfinished church will probably be completed in 2026 and has to be part of your city break.
Barcelona is one of the best cities in the world for food lovers! Whether you're the type to splurge on Michelin stars or simply enjoy a good, home cooked meal, there's foodie fun for everyone in the Catalan capital.
