Our Community Working Together for Wildlife

One of the many things that makes me proud to live and do this work on Cape Cod is the incredible support Wild Care receives from our community! There truly is no shortage of wildlife heroes willing to step up and put in the efforts to help our wildlife in need. Recently the Eastham PD did just that, taking care to safely round up several ducklings that were running around on Route 6 after their mother was killed from a vehicle strike. The surviving ducklings are doing well in our care and have graduated to our aviary where they will stay until they are old enough to be released. We were also so happy to be part of a heart-warming reunion of a tiny Least Term chick with its family. A keen-eyed Ranger from the Cape Cod National Seashore came across the chick that was injured and in respiratory distress. Our team stabilized the chick with oxygen and fluids even encouraging the chick to eat with the help of a puppet crafted by Animal Care Coordinator Jennifer Taylor on the spot to look like the chick’s parents! By the next morning the chick was ready to be reunited with its family which was located by a Cape Cod National Seashore Biological Science Technician. The technician waited and watched as an adult approached the young chick and fed it a fish. SUCCESS!

It takes many hands to make these success stories happen, and we are so grateful!

Summer Appeal Donations Save Lives.

Sorry to ask, really, it’s not something we like to do, but it is something we need to do so we can continue to save our wildlife. Please give what you can to our Summer Appeal. Wild Care relies on your donations to provide lifesaving care for animals. We’ve treated 1,356 animals so far this year, with summertime being our busiest time of year taking many of our resources. Thank you for caring about Cape Cod’s wildlife. Every donation makes a difference.

Intern Catriona Goering

Intern Olivia Mendoza

Shining a Spotlight on our EXTRAORDINARY INTERNS

Summer is no vacation in the Wild Care clinic and nursery with the large amount of animal patients coming through our doors. Thankfully we have had two amazing interns Olivia Mendoza and Catriona Goering join our animal care team this year!

Olivia is an amazing, hardworking, compassionate person, and a talented artist who left sketches of her patients in our clinic. We are incredibly grateful for her!

Catriona’s past experience at MassAudubon monitoring coastal waterbirds was tremendously helpful to us with our recent Least Tern and Piping Plover patients. Cate was also very kind, and thorough. We really loved having her at Wild Care!

We wish Cate and Olivia well at school and with their next endeavors.

Wild Care Volunteers Celebrated at Volunteer Appreciation Night Party

Wild Care volunteers are the best around, and to show our gratitude and celebrate their hard work and dedication we hosted a Volunteer Appreciation Night at the Elks Lodge in Eastham. In 2022 our volunteers put in an astounding 5,701.75 hours, and we could not do what we do without them! Volunteer Coordinator Amy Sanders recognized the volunteers who contributed the most hours in 2022 - Roz Goldstein, Richard Collins, Barbara Bradley, Judy Bullard, and Marcus Seletsky. Animal Care Coordinator Jennifer Taylor challenged volunteers to a game of “wildlife trivia”, and volunteer Bev Brooks was the lucky winner of a bag full of goodies donated by the Bird Watcher's General Store.

French Fries are

Better With Friends!

French Fry, the Herring Gull chick that was rescued from a parking lot of a Hyannis restaurant by our Marketing Director Eva over a month ago, was released with another young gull from Fall River. French Fry was just a fluffy chick when he was found suffering from head wounds. The Fall River gull was hit by a car as a chick and suffered a toe injury. Gulls are very social animals, and they enjoyed swimming together while in our care. They were released together in Eastham.

This release was sponsored by Eva, in celebration of her two sons Christian and Matt who both have birthdays in August and also love animals and French fries. This donation helped these gulls fly free again!
