NATIONAL SHAPEWEAR DAY | AUGUST 10
National Shapewear Day on August 10 celebrates the history, current trends, and continued use and evolution of body shaping garments.
National Shapewear Day recognizes what has been a long-standing important, and at times, essential, article of clothing building confidence and poise for centuries.
History of Shapewear
The history of shapewear parallels the development of clothed civilization. As far back as Greek and Roman times, evidence exists from archaeological drawings depicting women in corset-like garments. However, during the 16th-century, corsets and shaping undergarments ascended to the status of required fashion. Then, royalty typically led the trends and the current style of the era. Many changes and shifts in clothing fashion accompanied the popular corset - perhaps the most recognizable item in a woman's ensemble.
Modern Shapewear
Fast forward to the 21st century, and shapewear becomes barely recognizable. Once the constricting, cumbersome, and impractical garments worn by our predecessors, today's shapewear has transformed. It meets the varied and sophisticated needs of modern society. And it is also created from some of the most advanced materials available. Today, makers construct shapewear out of breathable, flexible, and durable fabrics. Additionally, shapewear comes in almost any style and shapes imaginable. To that point, you can easily custom-fit shapewear to any wardrobe.
Today's versatile and practical shapewear smooths and supports. It also targets the most stubborn spots on the body. When men and women don business wear, formal attire, or even casual clothes with shapewear beneath, they share a more polished look to the world. The resulting confidence they exude does not go unnoticed. And you can thank their modern supporting shapers! Whatever the occasion, shapewear will have you covered.

NATIONAL BOWLING DAY
On the second Saturday in August, National Bowling Day encourages everyone to set up the pins. Now go throw strikes!
While bowling style games likely existed in ancient civilizations, we probably owe the modern game of bowling to Germany. Kegels were used much like batons for protection or sport. Participants would place the kegels at the end of an alley. Each person then rolled a stone, attempting to knock down the kegels. It was believed that by knocking down the kegel, their sins would be forgiven.
Other lawn games such as bocce and petanque may also be precursors to bowling. One such bowling game was called ninepins. American literature first mentions ninepins in Washington Irving's Rip Van Winkle.
Bowling, like many sports, attracted gamblers. As a result, the game came under the scrutiny of legislatures and city councils. In 1841, Connecticut passed a law prohibiting ninepin bowling alleys. Circumventing the law, alleys added one pin to the line-up. Very little about the game has changed since.
In 1905, the game introduced the first rubber compound bowling ball. Up until then, players threw wooden balls made of lignum vitae. However, this modern ball launched a whole new era of bowling.
During the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, Korea, bowling was featured as a demonstration sport. However, the game never returned to the Olympics again.

The Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans (SWBNO), in consultation with the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH), has canceled the precautionary boil water advisory for New Orleans’ East Bank. Water samples collected throughout the impacted area have tested negative for contamination, including the Hollygrove and Tulane/Gravier neighborhoods. Earlier today, the precautionary boil water advisory for the West Bank was also canceled.
Customers who have not used their tap water during this precautionary boil water advisory are advised to flush their internal and external plumbing by running water for several minutes before resuming regular water use.
SWBNO thanks impacted residents, businesses, and schools for their patience throughout this event. SWBNO is committed to providing safe drinking water, and this precautionary boil water advisory was issued out of an abundance of caution to ensure the public’s safety after the system's water pressure briefly dropped below 20psi.
As always, if you experience very low or no water pressure, or witness a water or sewer emergency, please call 504-52-WATER (504-529-2837) and choose your language option (1 for English) and 1 for emergencies.

Red Dress Run
The Red Dress Run unleashes thousands of runners and revelers in red dresses or red gear on the Marigny and French Quarter on Saturday, Aug. 10. The local chapter of the Hash House Harriers organizes the event. The international group is for running enthusiasts who like to run from drinking spot to drinking spot. Over time, the annual Red Dress Run has evolved into more of a festival with a short run and a massive fundraiser for donations to local nonprofits. Registered runners gather in Crescent Park, where there are kegs at the starting line. The run starts at 10 a.m., and participants can return for lunch and music by HorseShoe Kitty. Many others will simply fill the streets of the Quarter with red outfits. Register and find information at noh3.com.
Every year on the second Saturday in August, the New Orleans Hash House Harriers (a local "drinking club with a running problem") host Red Dress Run, a charity "run" in the Crescent City. The run usually begins in the French Quarter or Marigny neighborhoods of New Orleans, although the exact location is only announced to those who registered. The runners, with drinks in hand, continue their route thought the French Quarter and spend the rest of the day celebrating. Expect a sea of red throughout the neighborhood! Even if running isn't your thing, head down in red to get in on the fun. Participants in the Red Dress Run can sign up HERE. Your registration fee includes a registration gift, first 3000 registrations, and entry into Crescent Park—where we tap the kegs at 9am and serve until 4pm, all you can eat food provided by local restaurants (starts at 11:30am), live music and a donation on your behalf to local New Orleans charities. Early bird pricing is available. You must be 21 or older to participate.

SAFETY TIPS
These hot temperatures can become life-threatening if the proper precautions are not taken. Residents can visit weatherwise.nola.gov to find localized updates on weather conditions when considering outdoor activities.
Residents are advised to take the following precautions to prevent health emergencies due to overexposure to extreme heat:
- Stay indoors in air conditioning during the hottest parts of the day
- If you must perform outdoor activities, do so early in the morning or late in the evening
- Wear light, loose-fitting clothing
- Avoid unnecessary exposure to the sun
- Be sure to drink plenty of water, and do not wait until you’re thirsty
- The very young, the elderly and those with chronic medical conditions, such as diabetes or cardiovascular disease, are at a greater risk for heat-related health issues and should take extra precautions to stay cool and hydrated
- Check on neighbors, children, the elderly and chronically ill to make sure they are okay, especially every hour if power outages occur.
Children and pets should never be left unattended in a vehicle. Even in 70-degree weather, the interior temperature of a vehicle can increase rapidly to over 100 degrees in just 20 minutes. Cracking a window does not help. Leaving a child or pet unattended in a vehicle often leads to a life-threatening emergency. Anyone who sees a child or animal unattended in a vehicle is urged to call 9-1-1 immediately.
For more information about heat-related illnesses, tips on staying cool and to receive up-to-date alerts, please visit ready.nola.gov.

Another big piece of the Saints 2024 schedule has officially been finalized, with dates and times established for each of the Saints' three preseason games.
The team will have its first two preseason games out west due to their training camp being held in Irvine, California.
Here's how the slate shapes up:
- P1, Aug. 10 (Saturday): Saints at Arizona Cardinals, 7 p.m. (FOX/Gray TV)
- P2, Aug. 18: Saints at San Francisco 49ers, 7 p.m. (FOX)
- P3, Aug. 25: Tennessee Titans at Saints, 1 p.m. (FOX/Gray TV)
The Saints preseason opponents were announced with the rest of the 2024 schedule earlier in May, but exact dates and times for two of the matchups were left TBD. As is typical with the preseason, start times and days are all over the map. The Saints will kick off their preseason slate with a Saturday night game, and also start an hour later than a typical Sunday kick in the finale, hosted at the Caesars Superdome.

Saints land 2 cold weather games in 2024. Cam Jordan is NOT a fan.

A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams
Williams’ Iconic Pulitzer Prize-winning drama that follows Blanche’s odyssey from the columns of her ancestral Mississippi Delta mansion into the depths of the French Quarter is fraught with steamy sensuality. Blanche needs a world surrounded by softness and magic, but grief and consequences creep into the household of her sister Stella as soon as Blanche comes to visit. Will Blanche be able to start her new life in the Big Easy, or will she be crushed against something brutal and hard?

Resilient pronunciation: ri-zil-yuhnt
Definition: able to withstand or recover quickly from difficult conditions
Origin: from Latin resilire meaning "to rebound, recoil"
Example: The community proved to be resilient after the devastating hurricane, rebuilding their homes and businesses in record time.
Recoverable is a synonym for resilient because both words describe the ability to adapt and recover from difficult situations. A flexible person or organization is not only able to recover from setbacks, but also able to adjust their plans and strategies to better meet new challenges. For example, a company with a resilient approach to manufacturing might be able to quickly shift production to meet changing customer demand, while a company with a less resilient approach might struggle to keep up.

NATIONAL S'MORES DAY
National S'mores Day on August 10 recognizes the most popular campfire treat! Millions of people of all ages love this gooey, toasted treat.
S’mores consists of a roasted marshmallow with a layer of chocolate bar sandwiched between two pieces of graham cracker.
The origin of this tasty snack is credited to the entrepreneur Alec Barnum. However, the first recorded version of the recipe can be found in the 1927 publication of Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts. Even though the Girl Scouts were not the first ones to make s’mores, Girl Scout groups describe them in their reports as early as 1925. Earlier recipes used the name "Some Mores." It is unclear when the word "S'mores" became the more common name.
Today, many variations on the original s’more find their way around a campfire.
- Try spreading peanut butter on the graham crackers before adding the other ingredients.
- Substitute peanut butter cups in place of the chocolate bar.
- Replace the graham crackers with fudge-dipped cookies.
- Add banana slices.

LSU Athletics is proud to announce its year-long celebration of 100 Years in Tiger Stadium, highlighted by stadium upgrades, events, storytelling initiatives, and a season-long celebration throughout the 2024 campaign.
Tiger Stadium, one of America’s most iconic sporting venues, first opened its gates on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1924. Since then, the Tigers have won 450 contests in Death Valley, which has been home to two Heisman Trophy winners, four national championship teams, and 12 SEC title-winning squads.
Included in the celebration are several upgrades to Tiger Stadium, including a new videoboard and lighting system, as well as other upgrades designed to enhance the game day experience. Other events and celebrations will be announced throughout the year.
The 2024 home schedule features several marquee matchups, including home contests against Oklahoma, UCLA, and Alabama. Information on the full 2024 schedule and season tickets will be announced in the coming weeks.
One of the most legendary stadiums in all of college football, Tiger Stadium has been called “the best place in the world to watch a sporting event” by ESPN and “the pound-for-pound king of noise in college football.”
Entering its centennial season in 2024, Tiger Stadium has been a cornerstone of LSU Athletics and the Louisiana community for almost a century, hosting numerous NFL superstars, Heisman Trophy winners, and Hall of Famers since its opening in 1924. Join the award-winning (1st place, baby!) NOLA Jitterbugs for a 6-week series with live music in the last class!
Our live music classes with local musicians and culture bearers, as well as our overall emphasis on music appreciation is what makes our lessons stand out among the rest!
Starts at The Contemporary Arts Center!
6-7pm Intro to Swing
For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.
7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level
This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.
No partner required to take either of these classes. Come alone or with friends!

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon, August 5
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

The New Orleans Saints will host two open training camp practices for fans once they return from California later this summer.
The Saints announced Monday that the two sessions will take place Aug. 20 and Aug. 23 at Yulman Stadium at Tulane University and at Caesars Superdome, respectively. The times of the practices and fan information will be revealed later.
The announcement came as part of the Saints’ unveiling of their training camp schedule. With the Saints holding camp at the University of California, the Saints will leave for Irvine on Monday, July 22 and stay out west until Aug. 19.
When in Irvine, the Saints will hold two days joint practices with the San Francisco 49ers on Aug. 15 and Aug. 16 in leadup to their Aug. 18 preseason showdown at San Francisco. The Saints also have another preseason game a week earlier, when they travel to Arizona to face the Cardinals on Aug. 10.
The Saints are holding their camp in California this year because of construction updates to their practice facility in Metairie. The team is building a new cafeteria, which is expected to be completed in the fall. Saints officials have said the team’s camp in Irvine will be a one-off, with the plan to have camp at the team’s facility next year.
Practices begin Wednesday, July 24.

2024 Full Moon schedule
(all times Eastern)
- Aug. 19 — 2:26 p.m. — Sturgeon Moon
- Sept. 17 — 10:34 p.m. — Corn Moon
- Oct. 17 — 7:26 a.m. — Hunter’s Moon
- Nov. 15 — 4:28 p.m. — Beaver Moon
- Dec. 15 — 4:02 a.m. Cold Moon
Sturgeon Moon (August): Named after the abundant sturgeon fish.
Corn Moon (September): Signifying the corn harvesting period.
Hunter’s Moon (October): Commemorating the hunting season preceding winter.
Beaver Moon (November): Reflects the time when beavers are busy building their winter dams.
Cold Moon (December): Evocative of winter’s chill.
In addition, there are a few additional names for Full Moons that commonly make their way into public conversations and news.
Super Moon: This term is reserved for a Full Moon that aligns with the lunar perigee, which is the Moon’s nearest point to Earth in its orbit. This proximity renders the Full Moon unusually large and luminous. For a Full Moon to earn the Super Moon tag, it should be within approximately 90 percent of its closest distance to Earth.
Blue Moon: A Blue Moon is the second Full Moon in a month that experiences two Full Moons. This phenomenon graces our skies roughly every 2.7 years. Though the term suggests a color, Blue Moons aren’t truly blue. Very occasionally, atmospheric conditions such as recent volcanic eruptions might lend the Moon a slightly blueish tint, but this hue isn’t tied to the term.
Harvest Moon: Occurring closest to the autumnal equinox, typically in September, the Harvest Moon is often renowned for a distinct orange tint it might display. This Full Moon rises close to sunset and sets near sunrise, providing extended hours of bright moonlight. Historically, this was invaluable to farmers gathering their produce.

New Orleans: The New Orleans Jazz Museum is more than a building; it is a living embodiment of New Orleans Jazz culture and music in New Orleans. This is due to the vision of one person: Greg Lambousy, Executive Director of the New Orleans Jazz Museum.
Through Greg Lambousy and his staff’s efforts, the New Orleans Jazz Museum has become the epicenter of the New Orleans Jazz scene. From festivals like the Danny Barker Banjo and Guitar Festival, Satchmo Summerfest, Jazz on the Balcony, Weekly free Jazz performances, and the most significant exhibits relative to New Orleans and early Jazz history presented in the correct cultural context, the City of New Orleans.
To paraphrase the great Professor Longhair, “When you come to New Orleans, be sure to go see the New Orleans Jazz Museum.”.
Presentation, 7:30 PM, August 23 at the George and Joyce Wein Jazz & Heritage Center, 1225 N. Rampart St, NOLA. Free Admission RSVP preferred to: festguide@gmail
Greg Lambousy is the Executive Director of the New Orleans Jazz Museum. Before accepting this position, Lambousy was Director of Curatorial Services for the National World War II Museum. He began his career at the New Orleans Museum of Art and later moved to the Louisiana State Museum (LSM). During his twenty-year tenure at the LSM, Lambousy managed the institution’s collections of more than 500,000 artifacts and other historical items, directed improvements to collections storage at the New Orleans Mint, developed conservation and digitization projects across collections and within the Louisiana Historical Center archives, conducted oral histories and guided the selection and accession of materials related to the State’s history. Since 2016, as Executive Director of the New Orleans Jazz Museum, Lambousy has led the expansion of the Museum in programming, education, exhibitions, international relations, and the development of the Gallatin Street Records label. Visitation has increased fourfold since 2016, and revenues from grants, sponsorships, and events have funded operations, while capital programs have advanced the development of the Museum’s Performance Center and Herb Alpert Education Wing, among other aspects of the Museum’s campus

- Crabmeat
- Chicken
- Side of Fettuccine topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
Fun Facts:
- Our handmade, paper-thin fettuccine was a guest favorite at Bella Luna in the French Quarter. Bella Luna was a fine dining restaurant owned and operated by Horst and Karen Pfeifer. It closed due to Hurricane Katrina and never reopened. The memory of Bella Luna lives on through Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s. Same Pasta. Same Taste. None of the Fancy.
- Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer makes the fettuccine from scratch which consists solely of Semolina flour and eggs. It’s a very time consuming process to make the fettuccine so paper-thin, but it’s definitely worth it.
- Fettuccine is available all day (lunch and dinner).
- Our full menu is also available.
- Uncooked fettuccine is also available for purchase to make a quick meal at home.
We hope you can join us for Fettuccine Frenzy — Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September!
