Villa Charities Italian Canadian Immigrant Tribute
#TributeThursday – Donor Spotlight
|
Happy #TributeThursday! We’re happy to profile a new immigrant history from the Villa Charities Italian Canadian Immigrant Tribute Project. This week, we're sharing the story of Giacomo Francesconi and Liliana Cancian, who both came to Canada from Spilimbergo, Pordenone in Friuli Venezia-Giulia.
“Giacomo Francesconi was born in Spilimbergo, Pordenone in Friuli Venezia-Giulia in 1926. The love of his life, Liliana Cancian was born at the neighbouring farm in 1931. They were in each others’ lives from the very start. They married in 1950 with aspirations for a life filled with great opportunity. In pursuit of this better life for themselves and their family, Giacomo and Liliana immigrated to Canada in 1956 with Giacomo departing first and Liliana and their young family, children Robert and Oriana, joining a year later. They planted roots in their new home in Toronto, Ontario. Giacomo worked as a carpenter and Liliana ran the household including managing the Friulano boarders who lived with them and worked with Giacomo. Through hard work, dedication and sacrifice, ‘Mino & Lily’ persevered and shared countless happy moments with family and friends.”

As the world became reluctant to visit Italy, Cushing travelled across the country. What he discovered was an unexpected summer respite where Italians were determined to enjoy life. A country known for tourism was suddenly without tourists as Italians were able to experience Italy anew. Cushing has captured on film, both the resilience and spirit of the Italian people.
