PAMED Maintains Opposition to State False Claims Act Legislation

The Pennsylvania House of Representatives recently passed Senate Bill 115 and was amended to include provisions establishing a state-level False Claims Act. The amended legislation now awaits further consideration in the Senate.

While PAMED supports efforts to prevent fraud and protect Medicaid resources, the Society opposes these provisions due to concerns about duplicating existing federal protections and exposing physicians and their practices to additional litigation and financial burdens.

PCCJR Calls for Fair Venue Rules in Pennsylvania Civil Cases

On Oct. 8, PAMED, along with the Pennsylvania Coalition for Civil Justice Reform and other associations participated in a call for fair, neutral venue rules for every civil case. Medical liability is one part of the broader venue problem.

PAMED Board of Trustee, Tecla Brabazon, DO said, "Malpractice reform really is a patient access issue at its heart. High malpractice premiums cause physicians to find employment elsewhere, in states that offer more protections for the physicians practicing there. The lawsuits should be filed where the care takes place. These massive awards are the driver for the ever-increasing malpractice rates. Our highly trained physicians deserve better protections."

Physicians, residents, fellows and medical students from across Pennsylvania gathered at PAMED's Advocacy Day on September 29 to meet with legislators and discuss the issues shaping patient care and the practice of medicine. Together, they brought the voice of Pennsylvania physicians and future physicians to the Capitol.

Before the legislative meetings of the day began, attendees heard from Rep. Arvind Venkat, MD, who represents the 30th Legislative District and is the only physician in the Pennsylvania General Assembly.
