Happy Friday, Mason District,
I hope you all had a great week and are getting a chance to enjoy this stretch of beautiful summer weather. If you're looking for something to do this evening, join us for the fourth installment of our Summer Concert Series at Mason District Park - a free concert where we bring local musicians, small businesses, and community together! The City of Falls Church Concert Band will take the stage at 7:30 p.m., and we hope to see you there for a great night of music.
In this edition of Mason Matters, you'll see what I've been up to recently, learn about volunteer and community engagement opportunities, and be informed on helpful Fairfax County programs and offerings.
As always, thank you for staying engaged and connected with our community. If my office can be of assistance, please reach out at Mason@fairfaxcounty.gov or call our main line at 703‑256‑7717.

Mason District representation at Virginia Association of Counties meeting
Any chance to highlight the amazing work happening in the Mason District is a win. That's why I'm grateful to have served as a Fairfax County (Region 8) representative at a recent meeting with the Virginia Association of Counties (VACO).
As Mason District Supervisor, I believe in the importance and value of local government, and am grateful for my fellow Region 8 VACO representatives for their ongoing advocacy of Fairfax County's missions and goals.

Advocating for Fairfax County's aging population
Our seniors have given so much to Mason District, and they deserve a community that grows with them without leaving anyone behind. During my recent meeting with Fairfax County's Commission on Aging, I learned more about what our older residents actually need, whether it's safer sidewalks, affordable housing, or simply having their voice heard and respected. As Mason District changes, making sure it stays a place where people can age in place and at peace is a top priority for me.

Language is not a barrier at the James Lee Community Center
The James Lee Community Center has been teaching beginning-level English and literacy skills to adults for over 60 years, serving 2,000 adult learners each year. Every time I sit down with learners at the English Empowerment Center, I'm reminded why this work matters. Language shouldn't be a barrier between our neighbors and the opportunities they came here for. Mason District is home to families from all over the world, and I'm proud to stand behind the students, teachers, and volunteers leading this mission at James Lee.

Fire Station 23's resiliency
While the original West Annandale Fire Station 23 building is under renovation, crews are operating out of a temporary facility without skipping a beat on response times and coverage for Mason District residents. I'm grateful to have sat down with FS23 leadership and crew members to learn how my office can be of further support to them during this time.
Thank you Chief Butler, Deputy Chief Cox, Assistant Chief Edmonston, and Captain Jimenez, for your leadership in keeping the Mason District safe.

Does the heat of summer have you thinking you need to upgrade from a sprinkler to a pool in your backyard? Does your barbecue hangout spot have a few loose screws or rotted deck boards? Or maybe your AC stopped working and you want to install the HVAC yourself!
Before you hand any money to a contractor or pick up a shovel to start digging, think about taking a Building Permits 101 class or Deck Details class from Fairfax County’s Land Development Services (LDS). We have classes available in several formats on our Education & Outreach website.

Extreme Heat Resources
Rising temperatures should be taken seriously as they can pose significant health risks to you, your family, and your pets. Prolonged exposure to extreme heat can quickly lead to heat-related illness, particularly for older adults, young children, outdoor workers, and individuals with chronic health conditions.
We encourage everyone to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day, and check in on neighbors, friends, and loved ones who may need assistance.
Be sure to visit Fairfax County's Extreme Heat resources page to learn about cooling centers, air conditioning assistance programs, and other services available to help residents stay safe throughout the summer.

Help a Student Start the School Year Strong | | Support the Wolf Shack at Justice High School | |
Support the Wolf Shack at Justice High School
Our office is proud to host a donation bin at the Mason District Government Center to support the Wolf Shack at Justice High School—a PTSA-sponsored, in-school pantry providing free food, toiletries, clothing, school supplies, and more to students in need.
Since opening in 2022, the Wolf Shack has grown into a vital, stigma-free resource serving thousands of students each month.
As demand continues to rise, we are collecting new, unopened, and unexpired toiletry items to help students over the summer. Please consider donating items like deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, soap, and other personal care essentials.

Help Needed for Children, Older Adults, and Food Insecure Families in Annandale
Preventing Food Insecurity becomes increasingly difficult at the end of the school year. ACCA is working hard to ensure local families have what they need to keep themselves, their children, and older adults from going hungry.
Their staff would appreciate any and all donations, but are in particular needs of the items on their shopping list.
For more information, visit ACCA's main page at: https://accacares.org/foodpantry/.
Thank you for your support and generosity in making ours a caring community!
