WELCOMING BISHOP KARIN

This Saturday, June 20, we have the joy of hosting the Augusta Convocation and welcoming our new bishop. The Rt. Rev. Karin Lee MacPhail was consecrated on June 13 in Roanoke as the seventh bishop of the Diocese of Southwestern Virginia, and the first woman to hold that office in its 107 years. She succeeds Bishop Mark Bourlakas. To welcome Bishop Karin here, just a week into her ministry, is a real gift!

We'll gather for Eucharist at 10:30 am, with lunch to follow. The RSVP is now closed, and we're grateful to all who signed up. If you're among them, we'll see you Saturday at 10:30!

Bishop Karin writes a great weekly newsletter. If you'd like to sign up for updates from her or other news from the diocese follow this link.

QUICK NOTES FOR THE DAYS AHEAD

Juneteenth Holiday

The office will be closed tomorrow, June 19, in recognition of Juneteenth. We'll be back on Monday!

Honoring Bizzy Lane

Join us after the 10:30 Eucharist this Sunday as we say farewell to Bizzy Lane and give thanks for the ministry she and her family have shared with us for nearly forty years. There will be cake.

TIME TO REGISTER FOR THE PARISH RETREAT!

Join us for a weekend away in the Shenandoah Valley. From Friday afternoon through Sunday lunch, we'll eat together, wander outside, sing, talk, dance, and gather around the campfire.

There are adult choir rehearsals, prayer and worship with our clergy, and plenty of free time to use as you like. You might hike up to the cross, claim a rocking chair and read a book, play a board game, or find yourself in an impromptu group activity. Parishioners from St. John's, Waynesboro will be retreating at Shrine Mont the same weekend, and we're glad to be sharing the place with them. We have two large meeting rooms reserved, so there will be plenty of flexible meeting space. Childcare will be available Saturday morning and afternoon.

All are welcome! Families, newcomers, longtime parishioners, we’d love to spend the weekend with you. Financial support is available. Sign up at this link by July 1.

TRINITY AT THE FOUNDING AND ON THE FOURTH

This year the nation turns 250 and Trinity turns 280, and the two stories have been intertwined from the start. We're marking the Fourth with a weekend of worship, music, history, and ice cream!

Last year, Trinity received a $516,000 grant from the Virginia 250 Preservation Fund. The grant asked the parish to raise $345,000 in matching funds, but Trinity decided to meet the state's generosity with its own and set a goal of $516,000, dollar for dollar. Through the Generation to Generation campaign, the congregation responded with characteristic generosity, going further still. Pledges reached $842,017, well past even that raised bar, and $594,634 has already been fulfilled. The result is a year of significant restoration across Trinity's historic site: brick walls and fences repaired, the church tower freshened, an accessible bathroom added, new drainage installed, and more still underway.

Saturday’s concert brings Virginia Bolena, Joel VanderZee, and Jonathan Bolena together for patriotic favorites on organ and piano, closing with an organ duet of Sousa’s The Stars and Stripes Forever. On Sunday morning, Bill Frazier and Tom Howell trace Trinity’s place in the founding era, from the 1763 church foundation to the Augusta Resolves of 1775 to the 1781 General Assembly that met here at Augusta Parish. Full schedule above.

All weekend, the grounds will wear the occasion. Festive bunting will line the fences and the site of the original foundation, the DAR will place colonial flags on the graves of Revolutionary soldiers in the churchyard as they do every Fourth, and patriotic music will ring from the carillon across the holiday. The church will be open daily with extended hours, with a docent on hand over the weekend for tours.

TWO VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES

SATURDAY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: FARMERS MARKET PICKUP!

The farmers at the Staunton Farmers' Market have been donating produce to our Noon Lunch program for over a decade. Keeping that going takes two people each Saturday, picking up donations at 11:45 am, bringing them to Trinity, and putting them away by 12:45 pm. It's an easy hour of service, great for families.

THE STAUNTON COOLING SHELTER NEEDS VOLUNTEERS!

Central United Methodist is organizing a cooling shelter beginning on June 29th for Waynesboro, Augusta County, and Staunton residents who are unhoused or lack working AC. They are providing a cool, air-conditioned space for visitors who seek shelter in during the hottest part of the summer. They need volunteers (age 18+) to fill the schedule.
