Did You Know?

  • The 2026 Scotties Tournament of Hearts will take place in January to make room for the Olympics, which means the Sandra Schmirler Foundation Telethon will also happen earlier. Mark your calendars for Sunday, January 25, live on TSN.
  • In our latest Donor Impact Report, we shared that more than $1.25 million in life-saving equipment was granted last year, a record total that helped launch the Foundation’s 25th birthday year.
  • In 2001, when Wikipedia and the first iPod arrived, the Sandra Schmirler Foundation began its work. Since then, an estimated 90,000 babies have benefited from improved equipment and care — and newborn survival rates continue to rise thanks to supporters like you.

A Major Milestone Worth Celebrating – $10 Million to Help Babies

We’re proud to share that the Sandra Schmirler Foundation has officially surpassed $10 million in grants to hospitals across Canada. The milestone was reached in Orillia, where longtime supporter and TSN curling legend Vic Rauter helped present a $55,000 grant to Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital to fund a new incubator for babies born premature or critically ill.

Click the video above to hear Vic speak about what it meant to help mark this moment. His heartfelt words reflect the power of our curling community and everyone who believes that every baby deserves the chance to thrive.

Since 2001, your generosity has helped us support 118 hospitals and an estimated 90,000 babies. Reaching $10 million is a meaningful way to begin our 25th birthday year, and we are grateful for every person who’s been part of this journey.

Celebrating 25 Years of Champions Starting Small

We’re officially in our 25th year — a milestone made possible by people like you who believe every baby deserves the chance to grow and thrive.

From a humble beginning that was drawn on a napkin to a cross-country movement that has now provided over $10 million in life-saving equipment, we’re proud to celebrate our birthday by reflecting on the people, stories, and moments that brought us here.

Over the next year, we’ll be sharing 25 stories — one for every year of impact — that capture the heart of the Sandra Schmirler Foundation. These stories will lift up founding members, families whose babies were helped by equipment you funded, volunteers, curlers, and donors who continue to give their time and heart to the cause.

The first two stories in the series are now live:

  • How It Started: A look back to the first days of the Foundation, when Sandra’s legacy turned into a mission that’s now helped an estimated 90,000 babies across Canada.
  • Champions Start Small in Chatham: A story of one former preemie who grew up to become a curler, volunteer, and proud supporter — and how a new piece of equipment funded this summer was already in use when he and his wife came to see it. A powerful reminder of just how urgent and needed donor support is.

We're excited to share all 25 stories with you, every one a reminder of how far we’ve come — and how many more families we can reach together.

Make the Most of Your Charitable Gifts This Make a Will Month

November is Make a Will Month — a perfect reminder to think about the impact we make today, and the legacy we leave for tomorrow. Whether you’re giving today or planning for tomorrow, understanding how to make the most of your support can help you make a bigger difference.

To help with that, we’ve partnered with longtime Sandra Schmirler Foundation Advisor and CPA Todd Troyer to present a special on-demand webinar: The Power of Planned Giving: Making the Most of Your Charitable Gifts. In this 18-minute session, Todd shares meaningful and practical ways to align your giving with your values — whether that’s supporting a cause today or making it part of your long-term plans.

Carter Merriman’s Birthday Fundraiser

A big shout-out to Carter Merriman, who chose to celebrate his birthday by asking friends to support Birdies for Babies, a fundraiser that benefits the Sandra Schmirler Foundation and helps fund life-saving equipment at CHEO. Carter raised more than $450 to support babies born premature or critically ill in the Ottawa area. Thank you, Carter — what a generous way to celebrate turning another year older!

Spirit of Sandra Scholars Win Junior Superspiel

Congratulations to Spirit of Sandra Scholars Katrina Frlan and Brayden Snow, along with former Scholar Nicholas Codner, who captured titles at the 2025 BrokerLink-OVCA Junior Superspiel this past weekend. Our Scholars continue to shine on the ice and in their communities — touring NICUs, joining cheque presentations, and helping raise funds and awareness for families with newborns in need. We’re proud to have them representing the Foundation in so many meaningful ways, both on and off the ice.

Runback Brewing Supports the SSF

Runback Brewing has launched a new lineup of curling-inspired craft beers — and they’re giving back. A portion of proceeds from select products will be donated to the Sandra Schmirler Foundation to help fund critical equipment for babies across Ontario. It’s a great way for curling fans and beer lovers alike to support our mission. More details to come on how you can raise a glass and make a difference.
