Dear Friends of RAMP,
It has been a whirlwind week at RAMP Disability Resources & Services. First, we faced the alarming news of an Executive Order threatening to withhold federal funding for essential independent living services that the disability community relies on, including our direct services. Thankfully, the order was rescinded, bringing relief to those we serve and to our staff. However, uncertainty remains. Many of our allies are also reeling from significant cuts to DEI initiatives—programs that have opened doors to equality and equity for all. Regardless of federal policy changes, RAMP remains steadfast in our commitment to serving everyone. Disability does not discriminate, and neither do we. We are actively preparing for potential changes to disability rights protections and federal programs that are critical for independent living in our communities.
As the leading disability rights organization serving Boone, DeKalb, Stephenson, and Winnebago Counties, we cannot remain silent in the face of harmful remarks. Last week, President Trump falsely blamed people with disabilities for the tragic airline crash on the Potomac River. Comments like these are not only inaccurate but also deeply damaging to the disability community. They threaten to undermine the success of those we serve and our employment programs, which have placed 91 individuals in jobs this past year, achieving a retention rate of 94% after 12 months of employment. We urge our community and partners to recognize the immense value that people with disabilities bring to the workforce and to reject such misleading statements.
While we cannot control others’ words or opinions, we can counter misinformation with facts. We can also demand better from our local and national leaders. Now is the time to stand together in support of those we serve. RAMP Disability Resources & Services will continue to collaborate with local, state, and national disability rights organizations to secure funding and protect essential rights. We will keep you informed with accurate updates and provide guidance on how to contact your legislators so that your voice is heard when policies negatively impact you, your loved ones, coworkers, employees, neighbors, or friends.
You can also take action by urging your members of Congress to fund disability programs and protect disability rights. You can look up your elected federal officials at this link.
RAMP stands strong with you, and we hope we can count on your support in our advocacy efforts to protect disability services and rights.
Sincerely,
Jackie Sundquist
CEO of RAMP Disability Resources & Services
