The Little Red Church in
Downtown Santa Cruz
| |
We at Calvary honor our baptismal covenant to “respect the dignity of every human being.” We celebrate the wonderful diversity of the human family, and strive to include a place for everyone at God’s table. Whether you’re young or old, rich or poor; married, partnered, or single; housed or homeless; gay, straight, trans, or questioning; native, documented, or undocumented…whoever you are (and just as you are), there is a place for you here.
The first of the month edition of the weekly newsletter includes articles that were formerly included in the quarterly Crossroads newsletter, for example the member profile written by Dana Bagshaw. Wherever you see text in red, that is a link you can click that takes you to more information. Remember to use the "Share this email" button at the very bottom to forward this newsletter to others. The Parish Care Committee mails out hard copies to members who are not able to view it online.

Sunday's Gospel story about the poor woman giving all she has to the temple in contrast to the rich people giving generous sums from their great wealth is very timely in light of our annual pledge campaign, now underway. It also speaks to the text of Sunday's offertory anthem, A Wreath, by the great English mystical poet and priest, George Herbert. Through Herbert’s brilliant word smithing, a humble garland, created from the poet’s shortcomings, becomes a crown of praise for his Lord. You will hear the strategic repetition of words from one line to the next, an overlap of language like the intertwining of strands in a woven garland.--Murray

Our theme for the 2025 Pledge Drive is “Walk in Love”. We will demonstrate the ways that Calvary is walking in love by inviting members from our hard working committees to share what they are doing to reach out to the Calvary community and beyond. Each Sunday in November a committee member will take a few minutes during the announcements at the 10;30 Service to share their “Walk in Love” and how our pledges to Calvary support their efforts. We can be proud of our habit of addressing our ideas by forming a committee and making things happen! Pledge packets will be mailed by November 12, 2024. You may place them in the plate on Sunday mornings in November, or mail them to the church office.

Spotlight: Marv & Sarah Peterson
|
Marv’s formative years in the picturesque town of Geneseo, Northwestern Illinois, formed a tapestry woven with the threads of family heritage and community spirit. His childhood was marked by unforgettable adventures alongside his beloved Grandpa Little, where the simple joys of riding in a pickup truck to gather chickens for shipment to bustling Chicago or local markets became cherished memories. These experiences not only instilled in him a strong work ethic but also a profound appreciation for the land and its bounty. His family regularly attended the Evangelical United Brethren (EUB) church and he fondly remembers walking to Sunday School in a suit and hat, feeling like a miniature adult!. These early experiences shaped Marv into a resilient, ready to face life’s challenges with the values instilled in him by his family and community.
Click HERE for Sarah and Marv's full interview
Sarah's childhood in Park Ridge, a charming suburb of Chicago, was as vibrant and colorful as the community around her. Though her neighbor, Hillary Clinton, was just a few doors down, their paths never intertwined, leaving Sarah to carve her own unique journey. With a heart full of adventure, she played with neighborhood friends, relishing the mile-long walks to elementary school, where laughter echoed like the songs of her beloved Girl Scouts. The ideals of courtesy, cheerfulness, and friendship were the guiding stars of her youth, resonating even today. However, her experience was a mixed bag; while she cherished the camaraderie and the joy of camp, sleeping in a field of cow poop was a rite of passage she could happily skip. Sarah's story is a delightful reminder of the ups and downs of growing up, where every challenge shapes the remarkable person she is today!

Awaiting the Labyrinth Garden -- Caution!
It was wonderful to open the north side of the church to our Labyrinth Community Build Day, and what a success it was! But now it is officially a construction site until Terra Nova Landscaping finishes paving the pathways and plants the garden. Therefore, the site is off limits so they can do their work and we can be safe. Even though the side doors will be open on Sundays during services, please don't walk on or in the construction area. If you need to access anything in that area, please ask the crew onsite or contact the church office. It won't be for long! If all goes well, we expect to open the garden by Thanksgiving!

SPIN: Socks for People in Need
One of the most important ways to improve health outcomes for unhoused people is making sure they have access to clean, dry socks. AFC partners with Bombas that provides a pair of socks to the unhoused for every pair donated. Calvary has been part of the SPIN project for many years! Basic, new white crew socks are appreciated by everyone, but you could also choose to donate socks specifically for women or children. Please bring new socks to the Narthex and AFC will distribute to those who need them.

The Quaker Center labyrinth was created by Tom Davis, a retired accountant and member of the Santa Cruz Friends Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). In about two hours, Tom laid out a temporary labyrinth out of yellow nylon rope and metal stakes in the autumn of 2000. He was asked to revive the temporary labyrinth several times for other workshops, and the permanent labyrinth was installed in 2002.The labyrinth is about 50 feet in diameter and contains seven cycles, in an ancient pattern found in varied forms throughout the world. Laid out upon a foundation of local mountain granite from the Santa Cruz quarry, the paths are lined with smooth river rock.

The History of Love
by Nicole Krauss
A long-lost book reappears, mysteriously connecting an old man searching for his son and a girl seeking a cure for her widowed mother's loneliness.
The Calvary Book Club offers a diverse group of people good fellowship and enlightenment. We meet the third Friday of each month at 3:00 at the home of Dana Bagshaw, 145 Jenne Street, in downtown Santa Cruz. We share snacks, followed by a lively discussion about the month’s chosen book. The books we read are suggested and agreed on by our members and include both fiction and non-fiction from the downtown library’s bags of 8 books, which we make available at the monthly meetings. Our normal gathering ranges from eight to twelve people, and we would welcome more. If you would like to join us, contact Dana.
