TGIT at the JCC
Thursday, 6/4 | 12pm Lunch & Jazz music with Richard Griffin

Next Thursday, 6/11
Annelise Heinz - assistant professor of history at the University of Oregon. Her work has been featured by National Public Radio, The Wall Street Journal, and International Chinese television. She has lived and played mahjong in the United States and Southwestern China. (Buy the book @ Bookshop.org) How has a game brought together Americans and defined separate ethnic communities? This book tells the history of mahjong and its meaning in American culture. Click-click-click. The sound of mahjong tiles connects American expatriates in Shanghai, Jazz Age white Americans, urban Chinese Americans in the 1930s, incarcerated Japanese Americans in wartime, Jewish American suburban mothers, and Air Force officers' wives in the postwar era. Mahjong: A Chinese Game and the Making of Modern American Culture illustrates how the spaces between tiles and the moments between games have fostered distinct social cultures in the United States.

Dr. Heinz will be speaking over Zoom, live to the TGIT group. If you would like to watch from home email Alex for the link.

Swim with the TigerSharks
Sign your speedy swimmers up for the most fun they'll have in the pool!

The TigerSharks Swim Team is a recreational competition swim team for ages 7 and up. This program will help swimmers to build endurance, muscle strength, and cardiovascular fitness. During swim practices swimmers will consistently be meeting new friends as they advance through the different swim levels. They will learn important swim techniques and life skills with their peers and bond over the shared experience.
