GRN Mentorship Program

The GRN has officially launched its mentorship program! The main objective of this program is to support early career researchers in the field of tobacco-related global research from low- and middle-income countries by connecting them to a mid-career researcher to guide ongoing or new research in areas of mutual interest.

GRN Subcommittees and related announcements

Education Subcommittee (Chair: Dr. Catherine O. Egbe; Co-Chair: Dr Anna V Wilkinson): This subcommittee is focused on organizing GRN activities, including webinars, conference workshops, and other speaking events activities to provide for SRNT members a platform for continuous development in the field of tobacco and nicotine research with specific targeting of LMICs. The subcommittee is also responsible for overall coordination of the GRN mentorship programme.

Outreach Subcommittee (Chair: Dr. Mohammad (Ebbie) Ebrahimi Kalan and Dr. Rime Jebai): The subcommittee is responsible for actively engaging with existing network members, get on-board new members, increase engagement with experts from LMICs, collaborate with other SRNT networks to convene joint activities, and take a leadership role by involving members and volunteers in network activities.

Communications Subcommittee (Chair: Dr. Mansi Chopra): This subcommittee is responsible for the GRN quarterly newsletters, media dissemination, and updating the GRN web content, including the spotlight and publication highlight.

GRN webinars and publications

GRN organised a webinar on “Promotion of Nicotine Products in Latin America: Lessons from the REMAP project” on September 27, 2023, 11:00 AM EST. The speakers at the webinar were Raúl Mejía, Chief of the Department of Ambulatory Care at the Hospital de Clinicas, Universidad de Buenos Aires, Joaquin Barnoya, Director of Research at the Unidad de Cirugia Cardiovascular and Associate Researcher at Landivar University in Guatemala, and Inti Barrientos-Gutierrez, Researcher (Medical Sciences C) at the Center for Evaluation and Survey Research of the National Institute of Public Health, México. This webinar hosted researchers of the project who shared their corresponding experiences and preliminary results.
GRN collaborated with SRNT on a virtual event on “Tobacco industry transformation - what is the current state of play?” which was scheduled on December 12, 2023. The event included brief presentations of several papers from the corresponding themed section of the same name in the December issue of Nicotine & Tobacco Research as well as a discussion with panel of experts. GRN nominated Prof. (Dr) Lekan Ayo-Yusuf (University of Pretoria) to participate in this discussion.
The GRN Co-chairs and subcommittee co-chairs published a commentary on E-cigarette use in low-income and middle-income countries in The Lancet Global Health, led by Mohammad Ebrahimi Kalan as the first author. Link
