This July, I join communities across Broward County and across the nation in recognizing Fragile X Awareness Month. This month provides an opportunity to raise awareness about Fragile X syndrome (FXS), the most common inherited cause of intellectual disability, while supporting the individuals, families, caregivers, and advocates whose lives are touched by this condition.
Fragile X syndrome is caused by a mutation in the FMR1 gene and can affect learning, development, behavior, and communication, with symptoms ranging from mild learning challenges to more significant intellectual disabilities. By increasing awareness and promoting understanding, we can help foster more inclusive communities where individuals with Fragile X syndrome are supported, respected, and empowered to reach their full potential.
I encourage residents to take this time to learn more about Fragile X syndrome, recognize the resilience of those impacted by it, and support efforts that advance research, inclusion, and access to resources. Together, we can continue building a Broward County where every individual has the opportunity to thrive.
| The County is joining together to help communities impacted by the devastating twin earthquakes in Venezuela. Residents and businesses are encouraged to donate new essential supplies, including bottled water, non-perishable food, tarps, tents, flashlights, batteries, sleeping bags, first-aid kits, diapers, personal care items, and other emergency necessities at designated County drop-off locations starting Monday, July 6. Every donation will help provide critical relief to families recovering from this disaster. Only new items will be accepted. Learn More | |
Division Spotlight: Emergency Management
As hurricane season continues, I'm pleased to spotlight Broward County's Emergency Management Division for working year-round to help keep our communities safe.
This hurricane season, the Emergency Management Division is encouraging residents to take advantage of several preparedness resources. The Enhanced Local Mitigation Survey invites community members to share feedback on natural hazards affecting Broward County, helping guide future resilience and mitigation efforts. Residents who require additional medical assistance during an emergency are encouraged to enroll in the Special Needs Registry, while the Vulnerable Population Registry helps municipalities better identify and plan for the needs of at-risk residents during disasters.
These initiatives strengthen Broward County's ability to prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies. For more information on how you can prepare click here!
