10 Largest Auto Insurers Each Raised Rates by Double Digits in 2023

In 2023, the total average of nationwide rate increases was 14% after an average increase of 11.4% in 2022, making this the second year in a row above a rate hike of 10%. U.S. auto insurers had a tough time in 2023 as rate increases failed to keep up with jumps in claim frequency due to a rise in litigated claims from auto crashes, and a rise in comprehensive coverage losses from severe weather and a surge in vehicle thefts.

'Chilling Effect' - How Carrier Pullouts Affected Auto and Home Insurance Shopping Behavior

In states like Texas, Florida, and California, where carrier pullouts and significant rate increases in auto and home insurance occurred, the shopping rate dropped. This decline suggests that consumers found it too challenging or risky to switch insurance providers, creating a "chilling effect" on insurance shopping behavior. The remaining insurers might see increased retention as consumers hesitate to shop around. However, it could pose challenges for new entrants looking to increase their market share.

Know Your Goal and Stay True to It

This time of year, we see many Lenders reviewing their Collateral Protection Insurance (CPI) program type. But the mistakes Lenders make is trying to fix a problem by creating another one. It is important to know your main goal with your CPI program type and stay true to it!

Is your goal to make the premium more affordable? To have the most comprehensive coverage? To have the easiest program to manage for your staff? To have the least disruption to your borrowers?

Lenders make the mistake because they want to answer 'yes' to all of these questions for all scenarios. The reality is that there are situations that will come up where a claim is denied, or premium is too expensive for the borrower, or there are operational issues with your program, etc.

When something comes up that does not achieve your goal in that specific situation, make sure to look at the whole of the program and not just that one scenario before making a change. Sometimes it is the best for the lender to make a change, other times it creates more issues than it solves.
