Greetings,
Our UCs Celebrate Earth Month All Year Round
In 1969, after a massively destructive oil spill off the Santa Barbara coastline, Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson was determined to act. After witnessing the ecological harm happening on our California coast, he created the first national teach-in on environment, and on April 22, 1970 we recognized our first Earth Day.
Public support and awareness spurred the bipartisan creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the bipartisan passage of the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and Endangered Species Act.
56 years later, and our 10 UC campuses are not only driving the research enterprise on climate, water, forestry, and agriculture, but their campuses also serve as laboratories for a sustainable future with finite resources.
