CEO MESSAGE
‌
Today, as you’re reading this week’s BioLinks, we’re connecting our members with the skilled talent that helps us build on excellence in the province. This morning I will have welcomed more than 600 delegates to BC's largest STEM career networking event, our annual Career Connect Day presented by BioTalent Canada. Many thanks to the sponsors, exhibitors, and companies that make this event possible.

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, STEM job rate growth is projected to exceed other employment between 2022 and 2030. Our sector is the fastest growing sector in BC, and we’re home to the fastest growing life sciences sector in Canada. In the US, STEM jobs already offer double the median wage and we’re seeing higher than average wages here too in our province (source: Life Sciences in BC: Sector Profile, cowritten with the Province of British Columbia and Global Affairs Canada). We have a lot to offer, and I'm thrilled that Life Sciences BC plays such a strong role in supporting our vibrant and growing life sciences sector. I look forward to welcoming job seekers as they build their life science careers in BC.

In addition to skilled talent, investment is also a key factor driving BC life sciences success. The call for applications to our Invest in the West presented by Amplitude Ventures investor summit is now open. Companies in BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Yukon and Northwest Territories are invited to apply to pitch in the following sectors: Digital Health, Medical Devices, Medical Technology, Diagnostics, and Biotechnology. The call closes on February 1 and you can apply here.
I’m always on the lookout for ways for life science companies to grow and thrive, so I am pleased to share the following opportunity with you.
The Artificial Intelligence Network of BC (AInBC) has partnered with North Eastern University Vancouver to offer a two-day virtual workshop focused on AI for Growth. You can read more about how is AI transforming life sciences here and then develop your AI vision and strategies by signing up for the AI for Growth workshop.
And I always enjoy celebrating success; congratulations to Caitlin Webster, who has been promoted to Director, Talent Development at AbCellera. Congratulations also to our member, Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute, recognized recently as one of Canada’s top hospital-based research facilities. Another LSBC member, Precision Nanosystems is also poised for recognition; listed in the Medicine Maker Innovation Awards 2021 your votes could help the company win the best innovation of 2021. Results will be revealed in the April 2022 issue of The Medicine Maker.

Next week, please join us for the upcoming McCarthy Spotlight Speaking Series, taking place on January 27 from 3 to 4 PM PT. You can register here. Focused on oncology, our expert panel of speakers are presenting from a diverse background of experiences in the subject area, including imaging, assay and liquid biopsy detection strategies, therapeutic innovation, and product development. And don’t forget to add our upcoming Access To Innovation conference to your schedule; it’s a great opportunity to learn from industry leaders and we have a great line up of speakers for you.

Note: I’ve learned recently that some of you may have received an email from a direct marketing company, offering to sell a directory of professional contacts provided by or in some way associated with Life Sciences BC. Please be reassured that Life Sciences BC does not work with this company and it is not affiliated with us. Furthermore, we value our professional relationships with members and business contacts and would never sell any of our contacts lists.
