Abilene Shines Bright with Festive Holiday Events

Named USA TODAY’s Best Historic Small Town, Abilene is offering a holiday season filled with unforgettable events to make spirits bright! While a Cowtown Christmas wrapped up last weekend, the celebrations are far from over. From dazzling lights to festive performances, Abilene invites you to experience the magic of the season.

On December 14 and 21, the Seelye Mansion shines bright during Seelye in Lights from 5 to 7 PM. This historic home dazzles with over 65 Christmas trees, vibrant poinsettias, and a collection of hundreds of nutcrackers. Guests can enjoy live music, light refreshments, and guided tours of the beautifully decorated 11,000-square-foot mansion. Tickets for Seelye in Lights are $10 for adults and $5 for children under 16. The mansion also remains open daily for regular tours.

From December 11–15, the Great Plains Theatre presents Forever Plaid: Plaid Tidings, a heartwarming holiday musical filled with nostalgic tunes and festive favorites. Showtimes include matinees at 2:00 PM on December 11, 14, and 15, and evening performances at 7:30 PM from December 12–14. Perfect for all ages, this holiday show is sure to delight audiences.

The holiday magic continues aboard the Cowtown Santa Express on the Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad from December 12–15 and 19-23. Passengers will enjoy twinkling lights, cookies, hot cocoa, and a special visit from Santa himself. Departure times vary by day and include 3:30 PM, 5:30 PM, and 7:30 PM. Advance tickets are strongly encouraged, as this beloved attraction fills up quickly.

Each evening, visitors can experience the beloved Christmas Tree Lane by strolling hand-in-hand or driving along Buckeye Avenue and NW 3rd Streets. The display of decorated trees brings holiday cheer to all who visit.

Holiday magic isn’t just found in Abilene’s events, it’s also waiting in its charming, locally-owned shops and boutiques. From unique Kansas-made products to one-of-a-kind treasures, Abilene’s small businesses offer the perfect gifts to check off your holiday shopping list while supporting the community.

“Abilene’s holiday traditions truly capture the magic of the season,” said Julie Roller Weeks, director of the Abilene Convention & Visitors Bureau. “There’s no better way to celebrate the season than by giving the gift of experience and making memories with loved ones.”

Abilene, Kansas Restaurants: An Exciting Emerging Food Scene

by Wherever I May Roam Blog

As a travel writer/influencer who has visited Abilene for several years, I was thrilled to see the attractions, but the food scene was basic. Don’t get me wrong—the iconic Brookville Hotel was always magnificent, and I could get a tasty meal at M&R Grill and Amanda’s Bakery & Bistro. But Abilene was not a foodie destination by a long shot.

On my most recent visits (May, August, and October), new places emerged, and I began seeing a spike in the restaurant department. This development excites the residents and draws travelers eager to savor something special.

2025 American Flag Sponsors

Visitors to Abilene frequently comment on the beautiful American flags lining Buckeye Avenue and NW 3rd Street. The American flags are one of the many wonderful attributes that make our community stand out.

To continue this tradition, the City of Abilene’s Convention & Visitors Bureau is seeking sponsors for the American flags, which are placed on poles from I-70 along Buckeye Avenue to the south city limits and from Buckeye west on NW 3rd Street. The flags are flown from the Eisenhower Marathon weekend in April through Veterans Day. Because they are displayed for seven months, the flags and poles are more prone to wear and tear. The City of Abilene’s Public Works Department replaces them as needed.

Our goal is to purchase 200 flags for the 2025 season. The cost of each flag remains the same at $25, which includes the cost of the pole.

While the City of Abilene’s Public Works Department, Vyve Broadband and Linder Electric install the flags on the light poles, we rely on the community to provide funding for this project.

We hope you will consider purchasing one or more flags this year. Please complete the enclosed form and return it to Julie Roller Weeks at the Abilene CVB by January 24, 2025.

Thank you in advance for your continued support!

Forever Plaid: Plaid Tidings

Forever Plaid: Plaid Tidings is a brand new show that offers the best of Forever Plaid, tied up in a nifty package with a big Christmas bow on top! Filled with Christmas standards that have all been "Plaid-erized," our boys are back to do their Christmas Special. At first, Francis, Jinx, Smudge and Sparky aren't sure why they've returned to Earth for another posthumous performance, but a phone call from the heavenly Rosemary Clooney lets them know that they're needed to put a little harmony into a discordant world. Sprinkled among the Christmas offerings are audience favorites, like their riotous three-minute-and-eleven-second version of The Ed Sullivan Show – this time, featuring the Rockettes, the Chipmunks and The Vienna Boys Choir, as well as a Plaid Caribbean Christmas that puts the "Day-O" in Excelsis! This truly "heaven-sent" holiday treat will lift audiences' spirits and fill them with nostalgia for a bygone era of classic music sung in perfect harmony. This show is rated PG, perfect for the whole family!

Seelye in Lights

Christmas at the Seelye Mansion has always been a magical experience! The holiday traditions at this historic mansion date back to December 25, 1905, when the first Christmas dinner was served in the dining room to celebrate the Golden Anniversary of Alfred Seelye’s parents, Mason and Ellen Seelye. The following year, on December 26, 1906, the mansion hosted a grand Christmas Ball with over 300 guests from across the country marveling at an 11,000-square-foot Winter Wonderland. The highlight was the unveiling of a rare Christmas flower, the poinsettia, shipped by rail from California—its first appearance in Kansas.

Today, Christmas at the Seelye Mansion is more enchanting than ever. Over 65 beautifully decorated Christmas trees fill the home, and nearly one hundred live poinsettias adorn each of the mansion’s twenty-five rooms. Adding to the charm, an impressive collection of hundreds of nutcrackers is also on display.

This December, Mr. Terry Tietjens, the Seelye Mansion Board of Directors, and their dedicated volunteers invite you to experience the mansion’s holiday splendor firsthand. “Seelye in Lights” will be open for three special evenings on December 7, 14, and 21 from 5-7 p.m. Guests can enjoy light refreshments, live music, and a tour of the mansion dressed in holiday glory. Tickets are available for $10 for adults and $5 for children 16 and under.

Don't miss this unique opportunity to step back in time and experience Christmas as it was meant to be celebrated—warm, bright, and beautiful at the Seelye Mansion.
