September Students of the Month
Carter Beswick
Class of 2022
Senior Carter Beswick has been involved in many activities and clubs at North Hunterdon. Carter is Team Captain of the Cross-Country Team, the Winter Track & Field Team, and the Spring Track & Field Team. He is a member of National Honor Society, National Math Honor Society, National Science Honor Society, National Social Studies Honor Society, North Hunterdon Student Council, Future Business Leaders of America, Chemistry League, and Spanish Club. Carter’s favorite class at North Hunterdon has been AP Government. This class was his favorite because he enjoyed debating and learning about current events. Carter’s favorite memory in his four years at NHHS was winning the 2020 East Coast Championship Cross Country Race. Outside of North, Carter is in Boy Scout Troop 288. In Boy Scouts, he made Eagle Scout by making a picnic area at the Lion Fitness Trail, is a Junior Assistant Scoutmaster, a Senior Patrol Leader, an Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, a Quartermaster, and Troop 288 Scout of the Year. Carter is also a member of Venture Crew 188, where he is Vice- President. He is also a coach for High Bride Youth Basketball, a Junior Lions Track & Field volunteer, a lifeguard at Health Quest, and has his own landscaping business. Next year, Carter plans in major in Chemical Engineering. He would explain his experience at North Hunterdon as fun, busy, and challenging.
Jack Pope
Class of 2022
Senior Jack Pope liked his four years at North because every class had its own distinct vibe that was really enjoyable for its own unique reasons, and the people in those classes made it all the better. His favorite class at North was Chemistry with Mrs. Post. Jack had fun with his classmates competing in different study games, working on labs, and turning the desks one way when Mrs. Post left the room. The class felt like they were one big, fun family. One of Jack’s favorite memories was from Mr. McKinnon’s Engineering class. They had to try and create the best concrete boat to see which could hold the most weight. A friend in the class tried edging out his boat to win the competition and ended up splitting the boat in half, which gave Jack the win. Another great memory he had was inadvertently making a “rap” with two of his friends in Mrs. Carter’s Algebra II class when they were going over a topic they were learning in class. Even last year, at the end of the pandemic year, he had a great memory of playing Scattergories on the last couple days of school in Mrs. Carr’s AP Lang class. It was hilarious trying to argue certain answers with friends like “panda express” for a method of transportation. Jack has been involved with North soccer for all four years. He participates in Gaming Club, helping set up the gaming nights that they host bimonthly, and in German club as well. Jack is involved with Math Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Social
Studies Honor Society, and Science Honor Society. He really enjoys the annual charity fundraising activities like Spike for a Cure, Hoops for Heart, and the NHS Trivia Bowl (which was made all the more fun by winning). Jack plays basketball throughout the year, whether it be for a team competitively or just recreational. He also plays soccer for a club team during the school off-season and plays the piano. Jack got selected to participate in the Governor’s School of the Sciences at Drew
University this past summer. Jack is applying to Cornell, Northeastern, Wake Forest, and Lehigh. He will be majoring in a STEM field, with statistics and data analysis as his top options. Jack would also like to have a minor or some other focus in Geography, since that is another of his favorite subjects.
September Athletes of the Month
Katherine Hall
Class of 2022
Senior Katherine Hall is goalie for the Lady Lions Field Hockey Team. Katherine is a prime example of embracing a positive culture in the classroom, on the field, and in the North Hunterdon Community. It is a testament to Katherine's personality that she became such a positive role model having only moved to North Hunterdon her junior year. One of Katherine’s strongest skills in field hockey is communication with her defensive players. This skill is strong because her team not only listens to her
as a player, but they also tell her things she can improve upon. Katherine believes she is the player she is today because of the time she has spent with the North Hunterdon girl's field hockey team. This year, she hopes to grow stronger with her team and win sectionals. Katherine has been playing field hockey competitively for three years. Outside of North, she plays with Omega Field Hockey Club. Next year Katherine plans on playing field hockey at Eastern University in Pennsylvania. At Eastern, she plans to major in History and earn her PhD in Ancient History to teach at the college level. Throughout Katherine’s life, she has moved around a lot. This led her to experience a lot of different sports and different teams. Katherine can say with all confidence that the North Hunterdon girls field hockey team is the best team she has ever played on. The girls on the team are very supportive and they can give each other constructive criticism to make each other better every single day. Katherine considers herself very blessed to have been able to experience being on this team with this group of girls (#winning is earned). Katherine moved to North Hunterdon her junior year during COVID. North has been the most interesting school she has been to in a while. Every day Katherine learns something new and meets new people with interesting stories of their own. Not one person is the same and she knows that every single day, she wakes up, she is always going to experience something new or interesting. If Katherine had to use two words to describe this school, they would be “constant surprise”.
Brooke Schroeck
Class of 2022
Senior Brooke Schroeck is a natural leader who brings a positive attitude and determination to every tennis match and practice. She brings the team together and excels both in the classroom and on the tennis courts. Brooke’s strongest skill on the court is having a positive attitude for the team, especially since this year is a combination of new and returning varsity players. This is Brooke’s third year playing varsity. She is currently playing second singles and is excited to attend the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex tournament this year, which was cancelled last year. Brooke has been playing tennis since seventh grade and started competing in UTR matches her sophomore year. She loves playing both singles and doubles. Brooke also played golf her freshman year and was a member of the Ski and Snowboard Club. She was also active with Interact Club, Key Club, and the Red Cross Blood drives. Outside of North, Brooke coaches Girls on the Run and volunteers at Clinton EMS. She also works at Gronsky's, Cryans, and babysits. Brooke’s favorite memories at North were playing in the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex tournament her sophomore year and the friendships she has made throughout the years at school. She would like to say a special “Thank You” to Coach Holt, Coach Niznik, Coach Steele, and Coach Joyce for a great 4 years! Next year Brooke plans on playing club tennis at college. She is planning to attend college either in the west or down south and is currently thinking about a business degree.

AP Exam Registration Information
Students enrolled in an AP class this year may take an AP Exam in May 2022 to qualify for college credit. There have been changes to the AP registration process and timeline from prior years.
First, you need to have a College Board Account. For many of you, you already have this. Your same College Board account log-in is used for PSAT, SAT, and AP, so if you have ever created an account for one of these, you have it done. Please do not create a 2nd account.  If you do, it could prevent all of your SAT scores or AP scores from going to the correct college.

AP Exam Payment and Registration – Each exam is $96 with the exception of the AP Seminar and AP Research which costs $144. Students can begin purchasing their exams from September 21 through October 31 via Total Registration at https://user.totalregistration.net/AP/310005.

At the end of the process in Total Registration, you will see a confirmation page that will include the information needed to complete the SECOND STEP of enrolling courses/exams in the College Board’s system, https://myap.collegeboard.org/login. This step should be completed right away as exams will only be ordered if both steps are completed.

Late and Cancellation Fees – AP Exams ordered between November 1 and November 14 will pay a $20 late fee per exam in addition to the cost of the exam. For those ordering after November 14, there is a $40 late fee per exam in addition to the regular exam fee until March 6, 2022, when AP exam registration is closed. There is a $40 cancellation fee for any test that is canceled between Nov 15 and March 6, 2022.
You can create an account or verify that you have an account at www.collegeboard.org. Here are some helpful hints for setting up your account or verifying the information if you already have an account:
  • Make sure it is the student’s name that is on the account and NOT a parent’s name.
  • The student must have their own e-mail address associated with their account. If you forget your log-in, College Board will send you an e-mail to reset it, so you have to be able to get the e-mail. This shouldn’t be a parent’s e-mail address. If you already have an account, please check this and change it if necessary.
  • If you have problems with your account, please contact College Board.
  • Please put your College Board log in somewhere on your phone – in the notes or a photo of the username and password.   You will use this multiples times in high school, so you’ll want to remember it.
Please contact Mr. Chris Maslonka at cmaslonka@nhvweb.net if you have any questions regarding AP registration.

For general questions, visit the College Board AP site here.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month
What is HIB or bullying?
In 2011, the NJ State Legislature defined what harassment, intimidation, or bullying (HIB) is by law. In order for an event to be considered an incident of harassment, intimidation, or bullying, there are specific criteria and ALL criteria must be met for it to be affirmed as a HIB event. Those criteria are:
An event can be any gesture, written, verbal, or physical act, or electronic communication, whether it is a single incident or a series of incidents.
The event must be seen by a reasonable as being motivated either by any actual or perceived characteristic such as race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression, or a mental physical, or sensory disability, or by any other distinguishing characteristic.
The event takes place on school property, at any school-sponsored function, on a school bus, or off school grounds that substantially disrupts or interferes with the orderly operations of the school.
One of the following criteria must be met:
The event has the effect of physically or emotionally harming a student or damaging the student's property, or placing a student in reasonable fear of physical or emotional harm to his person or damage to his property; OR
The event has the effect of insulting or demeaning any student or group of students; OR
Creates a hostile educational environment for the student by interfering with a student’s education or by severely or pervasively causing physical or emotional harm to the student

Types of Bullying Behavior
HIB can present itself in many ways. HIB behaviors can be loud and robust in nature or manipulative and passive. The behaviors can range from abusive language, slurs, inappropriate jokes, pictures and gestures, and threats. Many behaviors can be bullying, but there are generally four types of HIB behaviors:
Verbal
Includes taunting, name-calling, malicious teasing, or making threats
Physical
Includes hitting, punching, shoving, spitting, or taking personal belongings
Psychological
Includes spreading rumors, purposefully excluding people from activities, breaking up friendships
Cyberbullying
Includes using the Internet, mobile phone, or other digital technologies to harm others

Conflict vs. Bullying
A conflict between two or more students is sometimes confused with HIB. However, conflict and HIB are very different. Conflict most often involves mutual engagement in a disagreement between individuals.
Conflict, which occurs in everyday life, can range from a simple disagreement over an idea to a verbal argument or a physical fight.
During a conflict, name-calling, threats, and other behavior that may look like HIB can occur.
Determining whether an incident is a conflict or HIB requires an examination of the individual facts of each incident. If a conflict results in damaging, violent or disruptive, or other behavior, it may be prohibited under a school’s code of student conduct and some form of discipline may occur, but the ABR does not apply. HIB usually involves one or several individuals intentionally committing a mean or violent act against another person or persons who have a hard time defending themselves.
When HIB occurs, there is no mutual engagement between individuals, but one-sided victimization of another person or group.
The intention is to cause physical or emotional harm to the person.

Consequences
Consequences and intervention strategies that result from an investigation are highly variable and highly individualized. Consequences and intervention strategies may include but are not limited to, parent conferences, loss of privileges, school detentions/suspensions, counseling, class lessons, etc. There is no pre-determined consequence for any child involved in a violation of the Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights. All consequences are developmentally appropriate and take into consideration the whole child.
