Have you ever wondered why we can’t grow avocados or oranges in Washington state? Because our average summer temperature is tempered by the chilly Salish Sea, many common vegetable and fruit varieties do not grow well in Western Washington without the help of greenhouses. Thankfully, our local farmers are experts at choosing and developing varieties which ripen early and thrive in our climate. Farmers use a unit of measure called Growing Degree Days (GDD) to estimate plant ripening. Learn more about GDDs for tomatoes from WSU Skagit County Extension Master Gardeners: https://www.skagitmg.org/home/resources/tomato-info/
This week’s Fresh-to-Go bag contains donut peaches! This small, flat peach is a white peach variety which originated in China then were introduced to the U.S. in the 1800s. This juicy petite peach is the perfect size for a snack with a handful of pecans or to throw in your lunchbox!
