August 2022
Congratulations, Aarman!
YVCHR's Volunteer of the Month
Aarman, a senior at Hampton Roads Academy, says the thing he loves most about volunteering is "the ability to know that I am making a difference in my community, especially when I can see the difference my efforts make."

When reflecting on his experiences with YVCHR, he notes that his favorite project has been volunteering at the C. Waldo Scott Center, as "working with those kids and hearing them so excited was something that really made me feel like I was making a difference."
Aarman's advice for new volunteers? "Be ready to embrace each project and be willing to learn and share."

After graduation, Aarman plans to attend college to pursue a pre-med track.
Fun Fact! Aarman (pictured above) can identify almost all of the countries in the world by their shape and knows the capital for over 100 countries and all 50 states!
Newport News Gun Violence Intervention Program (GVIP) Grant Recipient
In June, the City of Newport News launched a competitive application process to fund evidence-based solutions to gun violence and received 28 applications. YVCHR is thrilled to have been selected as one of 19 nonprofit and community-based organizations to receive a grant through the Gun Violence Intervention Program (GVIP). In total, the city is investing $1,786,551 to fund programs, initiatives and strategies aimed at interrupting the cycle of gun violence in our community. YVCHR will utilize this grant to expand and enhance school clubs through our new Service Through STEM program, which will engage 25 students (minimum) per high school and provide service-learning experiences that address social/community issues. Participants will also serve as mentors to pre-K and elementary students through a series of STEM activities.

Did you know that your online shopping purchases can help fund YVCHR programs? Consider designating Youth Volunteer Corps of Hampton Roads as your charity of choice!

  • AmazonSmile will donate 0.5% of your eligible purchases on Amazon to YVCHR.
  • Simply shop at smile.amazon.com. The donation will be made at no extra cost to you.
  • Though 0.5% is not a large donation and it isn't intended to replace your regular charitable contributions, AmazonSmile is still a great way to maximize your impact! It all adds up!
Community Knights Bingo
High school students and adults who would like to help local schools and nonprofit organizations (like YVCHR!), please consider signing up to volunteer at Community Knights Bingo. Proceeds from bingo are donated back into the Hampton Roads community!

NOTE: Community Knights will sign volunteer logs for those who need evidence of service hours. This is not a YVCHR-facilitated activity, so a team leader from YVCHR will not be on-site.
