October 2024 News and Updates

A Month To Remember

As we enter October, we have just commemorated National Truth and Reconciliation Day on September 30th. We invite you to check out our blog about the steps Mediate BC has taken in regard to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action. On October 4th, we will observe the National Day of Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit (MMIWG2S). This day is focused on action, which distinguishes it from May 5th National Day of Awareness for MMIWG2S (also referred to as Red Dress Day).

October is also Women's History Month in Canada and an important time to reflect on both the historical contributions of women and the ongoing challenges they face today.

In line with Mediate BC's commitment to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, we are excited to announce an upcoming EDI session on October 22, titled "Indigenous Peoples: Contemporary Views and Impacts," led by Frank Morven. This session will explore fault vs. responsibility, as many people experience notions of “fault” when discussing the historical context when really, it’s more of the concept of our collective responsibility to know and do better in our everyday personal and professional lives.

Join us this month as we commemorate the history of women and Indigenous Peoples. Read on for more news and updates!

Major Life Milestones: We Need to Talk

Join CoRe Conflict Resolution Society and Mediate BC on October 4th at 12:30pm–1:30pm PDT as we collaborate to explore major life milestones through a free lunch series held online! This series will facilitate conversation and skill development. Individuals will learn to recognize, work through, and resolve conflict.

In this next session, we will explore the feelings and the conflicts that can arise as a result of "We Need to Talk" conversations. The series will be hosted by Allison Cai, and we will hear from Taryn Stickney and Percy du Hamel. Taryn will discuss her experience of receiving the news of her grandmother’s terminal illness, and Percy will share their experiences coming out. Learn more here.
