Harp in heart

Valentine's Day is all about love: love of your spouse, love of your family and friends, and love of the harp!

One of the questions in last month's harp survey was:

"What is your favorite thing about playing the harp?"

Almost all of the responses mentioned the beautiful sound of the harp and the calming effect it has on the player and the audience. Here are just some of the hundreds of thoughtful sentiments expressed.

THE SOUND

  • It is so soothing; it is chocolate for my soul.
  • It is a magical, mystical instrument that can heal, uplift, bring wonder, joy, peace, and quietude to myself and my listeners.
  • It says what I can't say with words.
  • Playing the harp resonates with my body and alleviates any pain or circular thoughts. It is freeing.
  • I just love the feeling the music creates for people. It brings love, happiness, and calmness to all.
  • It is soothing and relaxing: I feel energized after I've played, or just even tuned, my harp.
  • I like how it vibrates back into my heart.
  • The beautiful sound. Even just plucking a string is lovely.
  • I love the variety of music that can be played on the harp, the beautiful tone, and how relaxing it is to play.
  • It is the most beautiful-sounding instrument ever! Sometimes, I play a chord just to listen to the reverberation as the humming fades.
  • I love the smiles it brings to the audience's faces and the calm that comes over my senior listeners.
  • I play for my husband when he rests on the couch. It puts him to sleep every time!

NO BAD NOTES

  • Even a beginning harpist can make beautiful music.
  • You can't make an unpleasant sound on the harp.
  • Even when I get notes wrong, they sound so lovely I don't mind too much. It's a very encouraging instrument.
  • I love improvising, and I wonder at the strange music that sometimes appears.

THE HARP COMMUNITY

  • The community of harp lovers is diverse and wonderful.
  • I love the camaraderie with other players and listeners.
  • I play almost every day with a long-distance friend using FaceTime. Communicating with music is so much more fulfilling than just talking.
  • Another incredible joy of playing the harp is gathering with other harpists to learn, have fun, and enjoy the beauty of the harp. I love the sharing.

SELF DISCOVERY

  • "Look, ma, I'm making music!!"
  • I love learning new music, especially if it's a little challenging. It gets easier as I practice it!
  • Playing the harp engages me mentally, physically, emotionally, and musically. I forget about anything in life that might be taking up too much space in my head. My harp is my partner. If I miss a day of practice, I feel unbalanced.
  • It is therapeutic for me, and it keeps my brain working.
  • When I'm in my "Harp Zone," everything is right with the world!
  • My harp has become a wonderful friend who is always there for me to relax or entertain others.
  • Learning to play harp in retirement keeps me mentally stimulated and socially active. It provides a sense of accomplishment.
  • Playing my harp gives me a sense of confidence that I can do something besides household chores. It also keeps my fingers nimble.
  • I love it when I can let go and let the harp play itself.
  • It is a delight to learn something new at my age. I love the sound of the harp.

OTHER ANSWERS

  • I love introducing people to the harp and letting them touch the strings. Especially children!
  • Lifting up the music as praise to God and sharing His love with others through it. Allowing Him to use me and the music to minister to others.
  • It is just my hands on the strings! Nothing in-between, like on piano or organ.
  • The range of possible colors, sounds, styles, and effects is endlessly inventive and surprising.
  • The harp changes people's lives in a very positive way. My oldest student is 90. The harp has transformed her to a happier and more productive lifestyle.
  • With the harp, I don't perform -- I share.
  • The excuse to wear beautiful gowns, to get ready not knowing what I will encounter that day, performing in beautiful places, the smiles and accolades I receive, and having a skill that few people have that sets me apart and makes me memorable.
  • I love EVERYTHING about the harp!
Fairy with harp

You can download a 15-page PDF listing all 610 responses.

You'll notice that many people said the same thing (i.e., "the sound"). I have included all the responses in the PDF, including the duplicates, so you can see how many of us think alike!

By the way, I particularly like the woman who said she loves "the feeling of being a fairy when I play it." That answer made me smile.

We are all so fortunate to have the harp in our lives!

Keep on harping,

Sylvia

The Harp Center Survey

Question mark

I thank all of you who filled out the survey I created for last month's newsletter. I received over 600 responses!

I have emailed the ten lucky recipients, who each received $25 Sylvia Woods Harp Center gift certificates, and most of them have already happily redeemed them for harp music. Congratulations to the winners!

Here are some of the results.

Please be aware that these results may not represent the entire harp community. Since the respondents are all customers of mine, the answers may be skewed towards lever harp players and my products. But I hope you find the results interesting and informative.

For a few questions, respondents could select more than one answer. Therefore, the percentages listed for a question here may add up to more than 100%.
