Presidents Message

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

Greetings! We hope your academic year is going well. It is my great pleasure to have this opportunity to serve the community and update you on the IISE Data Analytics and Information Systems (DAIS) Division. To those who are new to IISE or DAIS, the division changed its name from Computer and Information Systems (CIS) to DAIS in 2018 under the leadership of then-president Dr. Hui Yang (Penn State) to embrace the big data revolution in business, engineering, healthcare and across the IISE divisions.

Whereas the COVID-19 pandemic has posed tremendous challenges and difficulties to the whole community, DAIS has proven resilient and continued to deliver excellent services with well-established programs and groundbreaking new initiatives. To that, I would like to sincerely thank the DAIS board of directors and our volunteers for their dedicated services, which have been instrumental to our excellence and sustained growth. We also owe our gratitude to the sponsors for their generous support: Department of Systems Science and Industrial Engineering, Binghamton University and Department of Industrial & Systems Engineering, University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Despite all the difficulties, we have held the second virtual IISE Annual Conference & Expo successfully, with the dedication of our track chairs (see their pictures below). DAIS organized 12 contributed sessions, 4 invited sessions, 3 competitions, and 3 special joint sessions with QCRE. The 66 presentations covered a broad range of topics including Deep Learning, Information Discovery, Smart Manufacturing, Healthcare, Artificial Intelligence, etc.
In particular, Bing Si (Binghamton University) and Xiaochen Xian (University of Florida) organized this year's best track paper competition with the support from volunteering reviewers and judges; Cheng Bang Chen (University of Miami) and Hyunsoo Yoon (Binghamton University) chaired the best student paper competition; Cheng Bang Chen and Saeed Ghanbartehrani (Ohio University) coordinated the Mobile / Web App competition. We also held DAIS's inaugural Analytics Teaching Award this year, which is coordinated by our current president-elect Sinan Onal and Immediate Past President Andrew Yu.

In March 2021, we had the officer nomination and election. Xiao Liu, Assistant Professor at the Department of Industrial Engineering, University of Arkansas, will be our next president-elect. We also have four new board directors: Chenang Liu, Assistant Professor in the School of Industrial Engineering and Management at Oklahoma State University; Nathan Gaw, a Postdoctoral Fellow in the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Operational Sciences at Air Force Institute of Technology in Fall 2021; Haifeng Wang, Assistant Professor in the Industrial and Systems Engineering department at Mississippi State University; Fei Gao, a Senior Machine Learning Engineer at LinkedIn Trust AI team.

The current board directors and their terms are listed as below:

We thank Andrew Yu (University of Tennessee, Knoxville) for his strong leadership in 2019-2021 and our TVP Joseph Wilck (William & Mary) for the support of DAIS in the past years. We are always looking for leaders in both industry and academia to participate on the board. If you are interested in joining the Board of Directors, the Call for Nominations will be out in early 2022, and we encourage you to apply. We also recruited our student board members in 2020, and they have been actively involved in the organization of DAIS activities and management of our social media.

Please follow DAIS (DaisIise) on Twitter.

Also included in this newsletter are the highlights of DAIS activities, including the webinars, and the winners of competitions in IISE Annual Meeting and Expo 2021 (Best Track / Student Paper Competition, the Inaugural Data Analytics Competition and Mobile App Competition).

Last but not the least, I would like to thank our exiting board members, Andrew Yu, Bing Si, Moufid Dardas and Saeed Ghanbartehrani for their tremendous efforts and dedicated service to DAIS division. Please join me in thanking all directors for their efforts during this unprecedented year, and congratulations for the newly elected board members. I wish the team the best of luck with their endeavors, and I am highly confident that we will have yet another wonderful year in 2021 - 2022.

Please don't hesitate to reach out and get involved with DAIS. We look forward to your participation in the DAIS track of 2022 IISE Annual Conference and Expo. See you all in Seattle, May 2022!

Sincerely,

Changqing Cheng
