The AAVLD Annual Meeting is an opportunity to engage with many diagnostic disciplines, learn what our colleagues are doing, and work together on moving our discipline and our Association forward. The scientific sessions provide the best forum for presenting the work we do every day and provide continuing education for all of us. In order to make these sessions the best that they can be, we need YOU to submit your abstracts.

We’ve extended the deadline to July 11th, and we need your submissions ASAP! Don’t forget that only those applying for awards need to submit a presentation recording. Thanks for all that you do on a day-to-day basis, and we’re looking forward to seeing you in October!

Dear AAVLD friends. We write to heartily thank you for the relief donations you have sent to us. Losing everything to ashes at this stage in our lives has been quite an ordeal. However, the outpouring of love and support we have received from the various communities to which we belong has kept us in good spirits all along.

The journey to rebuilding will be long (estimate: 18 months), but we are sheltered and all our basic needs are met. Immense thanks for your love, empathy, and generosity toward us.

AAVLD Labs in the News

Tanya LeRoith has been serving the college as Director of ViTALS (Virginia Tech Animal Laboratory Services) since 2012 with a huge positive impact. During that time:

  • ViTALS was the first diagnostic laboratory in Virginia to achieve full accreditation from the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD) in 2017. This accreditation, renewed in 2022 and valid until 2027, signifies their dedication to technical and operational competence in veterinary diagnostics.
  • ViTALS was selected as one of five laboratories nationwide to participate in the Partnership to Improve Early Detection of Emerging Diseases. This initiative, between the National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) and the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF), aims to enhance the nation's laboratory infrastructure to better address the threat of emerging infectious diseases.
  • ViTALS recently earned a Level 2 designation within the NAHLN, making it one of only 25 laboratories with this higher status. This allows ViTALS to test for seven diseases of high consequence to U.S. agriculture.

To support Tanya’s willingness to focus her experienced leadership skills on her newest role as Director of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, she will be stepping down from the role of Director of ViTALS. This will allow her to increase her focus on strategically managing resources in the VTH during the upcoming construction and renovation of the small animal teaching hospital.

To maintain the progress of ViTALS in serving the needs of clients and advancing its diagnostic impact, Kevin Lahmers will be stepping into the role of interim director of ViTALS, with Theresa Southard serving as the interim associate director as of July 1, 2025. Kevin's experience in supporting ViTALS' involvement in the NAHLN and his previous development of novel diagnostic tests provide the foundation for his future success in this role as interim director. I greatly appreciate Kevin’s and Theresa’s willingness to step into these important leadership roles!

Dan Givens, Dean of Virginia Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine

Dear readers,

It is with joy and gratitude to both the laboratory and veterinary communities that I share this JAVMA special supplemental issue dedicated to diagnostic laboratory medicine. Many areas of laboratory medicine are rapidly evolving as new technologies emerge and improvements in sample collection, testing algorithms, and reporting criteria are made to gold-standard test methods. Collectively, these changes have led to more accurate test results, better test interpretation, and thus improvement in clinical correlation. This special supplement includes original research and review articles, highlighting some of these advancements in the field and showcasing the value of the laboratory.

Characterization of amyloid deposits in canine mammary neoplasms, Yuka Kato, Natsumi Kobayashi, Susumu Iwaide, Shumpei Hisamoto, Satoshi Koyama, Yoshiyuki Itoh, Miki Hisada, Noboru Machida, Kohji Nomura, Tomoaki Murakami

Abstract. Mammary tumor–associated amyloidosis in dogs has been reported in several studies, but its incidence and predisposing conditions have not been investigated. We examined 252 mammary masses from 183 dogs to determine the prevalence of amyloid deposition and elucidate etiologic factors. Histologically, amyloid deposition was observed in 88 of 252 (35%) mammary masses. Amyloid deposition patterns were categorized into 3 types: stromal deposition (ST), deposition in corpora amylacea (CA), and precipitation within luminal secretions (PR). Of the 88 amyloid deposition cases, 49 were intra-tumoral, especially for ST-type amyloid deposits, which were all intra-tumoral. Immunohistochemistry and mass spectrometry revealed that ST-type amyloid deposits were positive for either serum amyloid A or α-S1-casein, depending on the sample; all CA- and PR-type amyloid deposits were positive for α-S1-casein. Statistically, intra-tumoral ST-type amyloid deposition was significantly more frequent in histologic grade II (p = 0.009) or III (p < 0.001) mammary tumors.  More
