NEW LAKES CENTER CLINIC IN OWOSSO NOW OPEN!

We are excited to announce that in September of this year Lakes Center Mental Health Network opened a satellite clinic in Owosso, Michigan! Lakes Psychiatric Center Owosso officially started seeing patients September 3rd with three providers practicing out of the new location. The three clinicians include two therapists, Courtney Scheid, MA, LPC and Tamara Carter, MA, LPC, and Family Nurse Practitioner and Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Diane Gutchak, FNP, PMHNP. Both Tamara and Courtney provide counseling, and Diane provides comprehensive psychiatric evaluation and medication management services.

Limited access to mental healthcare in rural areas was the driving factor behind opening the Owosso satellite. While telehealth does help to improve availability, it is not a full replacement. Lakes Psychiatric Center Owosso is unique as it is one of the only clinics outside of the larger cities to provide both mental health counseling and medication management services under one roof. Through knowing the needs of Shiawassee County and the surrounding areas, it is our hope to help address challenges distinctive to rural small towns. By improving access and availability and increasing resources and acceptability of seeking mental health services in underserved areas, we are working to decrease isolation and reduce barriers to getting help to promote healthy lifestyle options and improve overall quality of life.

We are looking forward to the opportunity to have a positive impact that adds value to the community. In addition to opening the Owosso clinic, there are providers at Lakes Center who provide telehealth services and can see anyone in Michigan as another way to help serve the larger population.

We look forward to seeing you soon at:

No, Women Are Not More Emotional Than Men

If you’re a woman, the odds are that you’ve heard the word “emotional” thrown out to describe your behavior too many times to count. Other common descriptors people have used for you may include “irrational,” “overdramatic,” and “sensitive.”

Yet, a man who responds similarly is often said to have presented a “good take” or “welcome input.” Each of these labels perpetuates the lasting stereotype that men are level-headed and women are unruly, emotional beings incapable of restraint.

This harmful and pervasive stereotype can have a negative impact on how women are viewed within their personal relationships, in the workplace, and in the world at large. As a result, women may regularly feel forced to modulate their behavior in unnatural ways.

Mental Health Tip:

Adopt a “Worry Time” Technique

Set aside a specific 15-minute block each day dedicated solely to addressing and processing your worries. During this time, jot down your concerns and brainstorm potential solutions. Once the time is up, intentionally shift your focus to positive activities, helping to compartmentalize and manage stress more effectively.

Mental Health Tip:

Create a Feel-Good Playlist

Curate a playlist of songs that uplift your mood and bring you joy. Music can have a powerful impact on your emotional well-being, so choose tracks that resonate with you and make you feel positive. Listen to your playlist during stressful moments or as part of your daily routine to enhance your mood and reduce anxiety.

Did you know? SPRAVATO® can have a rapid antidepressant response and is added on to an antidepressant and the rest of your regimen. It is the first new mechanism of action to treat depression that has come out in over 30 years.
