June 2024

Our summer camps are officially underway and Session #1 was a huge success! Many thanks to our amazing youth volunteers who invested the HEART work and the HARD work into improving their communities last week and also to our community partners who made these service-learning experiences possible by serving as host sites. With 8 camp sessions remaining, we are excited to see how local youth continue to discover the best in themselves by serving others!

Youth volunteers who are eager to elevate their leadership skills while taking an active role in shaping YVCHR’s programs are invited to apply for membership on one of our 2024-2025 Youth Advisory Boards (YABs). With a YAB on the Peninsula and one on the Southside, YAB members will participate in monthly meetings and also have the opportunity to help plan and lead service-learning activities throughout the year.

Interested candidates must submit an application by Wednesday, July 10th.

High school students who participated in YVCHR's Service Through STEM program enjoyed a special year-end celebration with their families last month to commemorate a fantastic year of near-peer mentoring and STEM challenges with their buddies at partnering elementary schools. Huge thanks to Newport News Public Schools and Hampton City Schools for partnering with us to provide Service Through STEM in 16 schools! We also appreciate the support of local foundations, grants and corporate sponsors for making this program possible.

Ready to register for a service project? Follow the steps below. If you do NOT receive a confirmation email after registering, please contact programdirector@yvchr.org.

Step 1. Visit https://ydat.org/site/HamptonRoads

Step 2. Log in with your existing credentials -OR- create a new account.

Step 3. Access your YDAT account and explore list of service projects.

Step 4. Register for a project by clicking the word "REGISTER" next to your project(s) of choice. Then scroll to the bottom and click the other "REGISTER" button. You can register for multiple projects at once.

Step 5. You'll be directed to a confirmation screen with project details. Be sure to read all project information carefully. You will also receive a confirmation message to the email address associated with your YDAT account.

**NOTE: If you do NOT receive an email confirmation, then you have not officially registered for the project. Be sure you have clicked both "REGISTER" buttons to ensure you're added to the project roster.**

(We are currently working with the programmer to make this step less confusing. In the meantime, think of the "REGISTER" button that's next to the project you're signing up for as "ADD TO CART;" the other "REGISTER" button at the bottom of the project listing is like clicking "CHECKOUT.")

NOTE: Due to our summer camp schedule, there are fewer episodic projects being offered until school resumes. Please only sign up for projects you can attend.
