Immediate Access One Update

Enhancing Affordability for Students

Launched in Fall 2024, Immediate Access One—our flat-rate textbook materials program—has already made a significant impact on affordability. In both the Fall and Spring semesters, the program saved students over $2 million by providing digital course materials instead of costly print versions.

While Immediate Access One effectively reduces textbook costs, student success still depends largely on faculty’s selection of course materials.

Preserving Academic Freedom

Faculty retain full academic freedom in their course material choices. Immediate Access One includes most required undergraduate digital eBooks, physical textbooks, course packets, lab manuals, access codes, and courseware. If you have questions about what materials are covered, please contact the Bookstore—we’re happy to help!

Adoption Process: Ensuring Day-One Access for Students

For students to receive their required textbooks and courseware on the first day of class, faculty or department coordinators must submit textbook selections by the adoption deadline. This allows students to make informed decisions about their materials and participation in Immediate Access One.

Even if no materials are required for your course, it’s important to submit this information each semester. This ensures that students’ Booklists accurately reflect low or zero-cost courses.

Course Material Adoption Deadlines

Faculty should submit course material adoptions as soon as they receive their teaching assignment. This is crucial for ensuring materials are included in Immediate Access One and helping students make informed decisions.

Between the Fall ’24 and Spring ’25 semesters, two-thirds of academic departments achieved a 90%+ on-time adoption rate. We encourage faculty who haven’t yet reached this benchmark to consider how timely adoption benefits student success.

Best Practices for Course Material Selection

  • Choose course materials as you always have, but be mindful that increasing the number of required books can raise the Immediate Access One rate.
  • Avoid marking materials as "required" if they are not essential for student success.
  • The top concern we hear from students is purchasing books that are rarely or never used. Thoughtful selection helps students save money and focus on what truly supports their learning.

By working together, we can maximize affordability, transparency, and student success through Immediate Access One. Thank you for your commitment to supporting our students!
