Happy Columbus Day!

Greetings!

The second Monday in October is a holiday observed as Columbus Day and/or Indigenous Peoples' Day, depending on where you live. In RI and MA, it is still only officially Columbus Day though some take issue with that and prefer the other recognized holiday.

While I understand the debate, I am ALWAYS grateful to have a long weekend in the heart of the New England fall season. This time of year is often seen as the BEST time of year in this part of the country so get out and enjoy it! Take a foliage drive, attend a live football game outside, get some apple cider and some apple cider donuts, or try a seasonal beer at one of the many local craft breweries.

Speaking of craft breweries, have you heard about our BREW WORK TOUR? Each month business networkers are invited to visit a different RI craft brewery to check out their offerings and do some networking. Our first meeting at Phantom Farms Brewery in Cumberland RI was last month in September and was a huge success. We hope you will join us this month as we visit Tragmar Ale Works in Bristol RI on October 15th.

Also, November is coming fast, and I am not just talking about Thanksgiving. Three of the BIGGEST events of the year for our community happen in November- the annual OCEAN STATE BUSINESS EXPO (Nov 10) and the annual BUSINESSES GIVE BACK TOYS FOR TOTS event (Nov 16) and SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY (Nov 28). Now is the time to reach out if you want an exhibitor table at the Business Expo or Small Business Saturday or if you want to be a sponsor for the Toys for Tots event.

I have given many in-person classes and business seminars in my lifetime and when possible, I always tried to go around the room and give the attendees the opportunity to introduce themselves. As a presenter, it is always good to know who is in the room with the idea of making a session more relevant to them. But it is also important for the audience to know who the other attendees are. There may be breaks or time afterwards for the people in the room to connect. Good networking does not only happen at networking events.

In fact, sometimes the best networking takes place where you might not even expect it. For example, if you are at some sort of event or gathering, you probably have a shared interest with many of the other guests who are there (you all came to the same event after all).  This shared interest can make it easier to talk to the people there than it would be to approach a stranger at a normal networking event.
