Supervisor Liz Alessio ~ August 2026 | |
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
August has been a very exciting and busy month in Napa County - so please give me some grace for this being a little late and a lot long!
As summer winds down, harvest is underway, students are settling back into school, and families are getting into a new routine. This time of year, is always a wonderful reminder of how much our schools, students and educators contribute to the strength of our community. I wish all our students, teachers, school staff, and families a wonderful year ahead.
Throughout August, I had the opportunity to celebrate our first responders, agricultural heritage, and young leaders, while supporting organizations working to strengthen families and our community. Highlights included Napa’s National Night Out, the Napa Town & Country Junior Livestock Auction, a tour of the Sarah Leslie Foundation’s housing for survivors of domestic violence, and Michael Constantas’s Eagle Scout Court of Honor. I also joined community leaders for conversations about California’s budget and regional priorities at the Napa Leadership Luncheon and Cal Cities North Bay Division session.
It was also a month of supporting organizations doing important work across Napa County—from the Salvation Army’s “Out of the Fire” Gala, Megan Dominici’s Passion for Change celebrating 19 inspiring Napa County youth, and the Alaina’s Voice Foundation Dinner supporting mental health, to Hands Across the Valley, which helps fund critical food programs including the Napa Food Bank, Meals on Wheels and Feeding It Forward.
One of my favorite highlights was hosting my 6th Annual Harvest Hoedown, raising an incredible $264,000 for Cope Family Center and its child abuse prevention programs. I’m so grateful to everyone who helped make this possible and supported Cope’s work to give parents the tools and resources they need to raise safe, healthy and thriving children.
I closed out the month at The Harvest Stomp, supporting the Napa Valley Grapegrowers’ work to strengthen grower resiliency, advance research and protect our Agricultural Preserve, and the Music & Memories Gala, benefiting local Alzheimer’s and dementia programs through the Providence Community Health Foundation Napa Valley. I’m especially proud that District 2 Community Grant funds provided $1,500 to the Foundation to help strengthen this important network of support for local families.
Looking back on such a full month, I’m reminded that the greatest strength of Napa County is its people. Whether we are supporting agriculture, investing in young people, helping families in crisis, addressing mental health, caring for older adults, or making sure our neighbors have access to food and essential services, we continue to show what it means to care for one another.

Napa County Agricultural Crop Report
On July 28, Assistant Agricultural Commissioner Toosdi Malito shared Napa County's 2025 Crop Report, which tracks how much the county's farms and vineyards produced last year. Here's a few key takeaways:
• Overall value dipped slightly. In 2025, agriculture in Napa County generated roughly $974.2 million in total value, down 6% from 2024. The main reason: farmers grew slightly less acreage and tonnage overall. Still, winegrapes held their value well.
• Livestock and poultry values increased. Livestock was valued at $3.9 million, up about $1.7 million from the year before. Poultry and other animal products brought in $697,000, up $325,000 from 2024.
• Pest patrol stayed busy. To protect local farms and natural areas, county staff checked 49,068 pest traps in 2025. They kept a close watch for the glassy-winged sharpshooter, an invasive pest that can spread plant disease, and inspected 2,770 plant shipments and other materials to catch it and other harmful pests before they could spread.

Soft Plastic Recycling is coming!
This summer, roughly 1,000 households across Napa County have received a yellow crate to place next to their trash and recycling bins, as a test to see whether a major recycling mishap can finally be addressed. The yellow crate is part of a soft plastic recycling program that's being tested out through November.
The program, which is run through Napa Recycling & Waste Services and Napa County Recycling & Waste Services, aims to properly separate soft plastic waste (chips bags, ziploc bags and plastic bags, etc.) since mixing them together with other recyclables contributes to challenges in the machinery that sorts it all.

A Boost for Farmworker Housing!
I’m pleased to share that AB 1890, sponsored by Assembly Majority Leader Cecilia Aguiar-Curry, passed the Senate Appropriations Committee’s suspense file last week.
The bill would increase the State’s annual contribution to Napa County’s three farmworker housing centers from $250,000 to up to $500,000, helping support these vital housing resources.
Napa County has worked closely with Majority Leader Aguiar-Curry and our state partners to strengthen this funding partnership. Our farmworker housing centers provide safe, affordable housing for the agricultural workers who are essential to Napa County’s economy, and I’m grateful to the Majority Leader for championing this important investment as the bill moves forward.
Pictured above is River Ranch Farmworker Center in St. Helena, one of three Napa County-owned farmworker housing centers. Opened in 2003 on land donated by local vintner Joseph Phelps, River Ranch was created through a partnership among local vintners, community leaders, and the County. Today, it provides housing for up to 60 farmworkers at a time and remains an important resource for the seasonal workforce that helps keep Napa Valley’s agricultural industry thriving.

We just learned about this event and wanted to share, luckily there is one remaining date in the line-up.
