Wild Care Friends
We are so excited to announce the launch of our much anticipated "Trash Your Tackle" initiative. (
Read
all about it!) In this pilot initiative, five PVC receptacles will be placed at separate locations in the Town of Chatham, in May. The receptacles will serve as repositories for derelict recreational fishing gear – including hooks, lines, and sinkers. The PVC receptacles will provide a place for the public to deposit gear, and safely remove it from the environment. The
gear will be brought to Wild Care to be recycled, repurposed or disposed of accordingly.
Our goal is to decrease the number of fishing-debris related wildlife casualties, and to raise awareness that materials such as fishing line, hooks, lures, and sinkers can be extremely harmful to wildlife – even when these items are not in the water. In 2017 and 2018, Wild Care saw over 25 waterbirds with fishing-debris related injuries, and the numbers are increasing annually. This Herring Gull (photo) was one of the lucky ones. This is not always the case.
Trash Your Tackle - Save A Seabird!
Sincerely, Executive Director, Stephanie ~

Mourning Dove
|
This young Mourning Dove and its sibling blew out of their nest onto the ground. The observer noted that the mother was around, but could not tend to the young on the ground. Wild Care Volunteer Elena Calabrese arrived at the scene to find one baby deceased. She brought the other to Wild Care for care. Unfortunately, we were unable to reunite the bird with its parents. That's why we are here. To provide nurturing care to wildlife in need.

|
Spring is here! This Mourning Dove is the first baby bird we've received this season.
Last year, we received over 300 orphaned birds in the spring and summer months.
Please make a donation today, and help us to prepare for what spring has to bring!

Wild Care’s “Trash Your Tackle” Initiative Seeks to Reduce Marine Debris Impacts on Wildlife
|
|
From our Executive Director, Stephanie Ellis:
Wild Care is excited to announce the launch of their new initiative called, "Trash Your Tackle". In this pilot initiative, five PVC receptacles will be placed at separate locations in the Town of Chatham. The receptacles will serve as repositories for derelict recreational fishing gear - including hooks, lines, and sinkers.
The ultimate goal of the PVC receptacles is to provide a place for the public to deposit gear, and safely remove it from the environment. The receptacles will be emptied on a weekly basis by volunteers from Cape Abilities (Hyannis). Materials collected will be brought to Wild Care to be weighed, itemized, cleaned, sorted, recycled, repurposed or disposed of appropriately, depending on the materials...

The Orleans Rotary is Not Swan Habitat!

'Tis the time of year when swans are nesting and becoming territorial. About 20 swans have spent the winter together peacefully on Town Cove in Orleans. Swans are now dispersing, and establishing their own territories. Some are being attacked by other swans, and can be found wandering into strange places.. like the Orleans rotary...

By Jennifer Taylor, Animal Care Coordinator
The doorbell rang at Wild Care, I opened the door to find a young woman. She was in a hurry to pick up her brother, but wanted me to know she had just passed two birds on Bridge Rd. One was dead, and one was standing beside it. Bridge Road is very close to Wild Care, I hopped into my car to search for the birds. In my mind I was anticipating two songbirds, a mated pair, with one lifeless bird on the ground and the other frantically trying to revive it...

Volunteer Spotlight - by Niki Walley (Wildlife Rehabilitator/Volunteer Coord.)
|
Wild Care is grateful for our volunteers! We would not survive without them. They assist with everything from animal care, to gardening, facility maintenance, fundraising and so much more!
This month, we'd like to highlight outstanding volunteer, Leslie McCarthy.
Leslie
is a Clinic, Baby Bird, Squirrel Team and Rescue Volunteer. She has been with us beginning prior to 2012.
Leslie
not only comes in every Sunday for her clinic shift (and baby birds in the Summer). She has been coming in multiple additional times a week to help us to feed (nurse) orphaned squirrels. She even came in twice in one day to help out when we were short-handed. She has a very calm nature, and is gentle with the animals and is extremely easy to get along with. We all adore her! Thank you, Leslie.
(P.S. We encourage you all to wear gloves when working with wildlife! ;-)

About Wild Care
Since 1994, Wild Care has treated injured, ill and orphaned native wildlife for release back into the wild capable of independent survival, prevented wildlife casualties through public education and counseling, and engaged the community in conservation services through volunteerism. Wild Care does not charge the public for our services. We accept wildlife regardless of a rescuer's ability to make a donation; and we never compromise quality of care or the dignity of an animal's life for fundraising purposes.
