Missouri Legislature Passes SB 999 to Protect Babies Born-Alive After an Abortion Attempt

This week the Missouri House of Representatives passed SB 999, which includes the "Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act." The Missouri Senate passed the bill last week and sent it to the House. The bill ensures that children born-alive after an abortion have all the rights, privileges, and immunities available to any other person and requires medical professionals to provide health care to abortion survivors. This legislation is essential for saving the lives of vulnerable children.

Supreme Court Allows Mail-Order

Abortions to Continue

"When the FDA changed its rule in 2023 to allow mail order abortion pills without the in-person doctor visit, women’s lives were put at risk,” said Susan Klein, Executive Director of Missouri Right to Life.

“Thousands of women have suffered serious health complications from Mifepristone. The FDA has admitted that it failed to adequately study the effects of the 2023 rule change on patient safety. The in-person doctor’s visit is essential to accurately determine the gestational age of the unborn child and to rule out ectopic pregnancies."

National Right to Life expressed deep disappointment today following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision that allows loosened regulations surrounding the abortion drug mifepristone to remain in place while broader legal and scientific questions continue to be debated.

“This decision is deeply troubling because it leaves women exposed to powerful abortion drugs,” said Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life. “Women facing unexpected pregnancies deserve real medical care and support, not a one-size-fits-all mail-order abortion system that minimizes risks and leaves women isolated during medical emergencies.”

Life is in the Air

Regardless of how pro-life legislation has fared, or will fare, at the polls, pro-life victories are all around us. At our Harry’s Hay Days booth in Grandview last weekend I had many conversations that would attest to this.

One couple shared how the husband used to be very pro-choice and even served on the board of Missourians for Choice until 2001, the year his wife became pregnant for the first time. Mom felt like something just wasn’t right, so she insisted that her doctor (the only physician who performed abortions where they lived) give her a sonogram. She called her husband to come to the doctor’s office, and together they watched as their twin boys wrestled each other (literally) in utero. She was only eight weeks along. Dad’s response? “I became pro-life in about 45 seconds.”

One woman recounted how her father was stationed in Germany when her mom was pregnant with her. The doctor advised that she abort because her exposure to German measles would produce a “retarded” child. Her mom ignored his recommendation and gave birth to a healthy baby girl who is a pro-life woman today.
